BY A THREAD is Gov't Mule's first studio album since HIGH & MIGHTY was issued in 2006. Since that time, bassist Andy Hess has been replaced by Jorgen Carlsson, though Hess appears on two tracks at the end of the album. Carlsson's playing style is much more aggressive than Hess', and is therefore closer - in spirit anyway - to Gov't Mule's original bassist, the late Allen Woody, though he possesses an adventurous sense of time and is harmonically more colorful than either Woody or Hess. Carlsson and drummer Matt Abst are a solid match, since Abst is a drummer used to shifting time signatures and allowing the unexpected in while still driving a band. Along with Styx and REO Speedwagon, Journey ruled the charts and radio airwaves in the early '80s. And like the aforementioned bands, Journey began in the '70s, so obviously the compilers of its 1988 GREATEST HITS release had a lot of material to choose from.
Journey's sound was a merger of hard rock, compliments of guitarist Neal Schon, and the melodic pop/ballads of singer Steve Perry. This resulted in such classic rock radio staples as "Any Way You Want It," "Separate Ways," "Open Arms," "Don't Stop Believin'," "Wheel in the Sky," and "Who's Crying Now," all included here.

David Unlimbo (guitar & synths) with Zoltan Finger (Bass), Zenga Bloem (percussion) and Charlie Rascall (drums & percussion).David, Zenga and Lyndon have been playing together for over eight years. In their previous incarnation as UNLIMBO they have played at hundreds of clubs, venues and festivals throughout Europe with positive reviews and radio plays all over the world. All tracks are written and produced by David, a consummate guitarist and sound engineer, who has worked on albums by Mari Wilson & the Wilsations, Kim Wilde and The Enid and on live production for Ned’s Atomic Dustbin, The Enid, Solstice, Hawkwind and Channel Zero (King Prawn) amongst others. David has played guitar with Jerry Marotta, Korai Öröm, Beneficial Gene, Trancient Dreams, Shom, Spicy Goat and Dead Marines. In his previous incarnation as UNLIMBO, David produced six albums including Prahna Fish, Unlimbits and Nine Lives. He has played at hundreds of venues throughout Europe and gets positive reviews and radio plays all over the world. Glastonbury, Burg Herzberg, Antiworld, Megadog, Big Green and Wickerman are amongst the dozens of festivals he has played. Storming bass rhythms on Akahum’s first album, Electwistery are provided by Zoltan Finger, whose past credits include being a founder member of From The Hip and working with Stan Webb (Chicken Shack). Lyndon is long-serving collaborator, having toured and recorded extensively with David in Unlimbo and Akahum. Ace percussionist Zenga Bloem featured on all Unlimbo's releases, from the debut album in 1997 to their swansong release of 2002.
