| | Norah Jones Fall CD (2009)
Jumpoff Vol 12 CD music
$15.05 With The Fall, Norah Jones completes the transition away from her smooth cabaret beginnings and toward a mellowly arty, modern singer/songwriter. Jones began this shift on 2007's Not Too Late, an album that gently rejected her tendencies for lulling, tasteful crooning, but The Fall is a stronger, more cohesive work, maintaining an elegantly dreamy state that's faithful to the crooner of Come Away with Me while feeling decidedly less classicist. Some of this could be attributed ...
| | Tom Petty Live Anthology CDs (2009)
Jumpoff Vol 12 music CDs
$19.98 It's a commonly held opinion among fans and band alike that Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers' lone live album, 1986's Pack Up the Plantation, didn't quite capture the group at its peak, so there has been a long-standing need for another live set, which 2009's Live Anthology finally provides. Like its closest cousin, Bruce Springsteen's Live 1975-1985, Live Anthology almost overcompensates for the long wait by offering almost too much music, cherrypicking highlights from 1978 to 2007. In its simplest incarnation, Live Anthology is a super-affordable, four-disc box set running 48 tracks, which is eight cuts longer than Springsteen's box, plenty long enough for most fans, but in its deluxe version, available only through Best Buy, ...
| | John Mayer Battle Studies CD (2009)
Jumpoff Vol 12 songs
$12.95 It's no secret that John Mayer is a 21st Century Fox, wining and dining women all through tabloid headlines, so it's about time he delivered an album that traded upon his loverman persona -- and Battle Studies is that record in spades. Retaining more than a modicum of the slick, soul-blues undertones of Continuum, Mayer fashions a modern groove album, a record that maintains a smooth seductive vibe so thoroughly it spills into a one-man band cover of "Crossroads." Mayer remains somewhat of a disciple of Slowhand, but he shows an unusual interest in the big AOR stylings of Journeyman, along with Stevie Ray Vaughan's In Step, creating a coolly clean blend of synths and Strats, one that's as much about texture as it is about song.something perfectly appropriate for a make-out album like this. Sometimes, Mayer dips too heavily toward the texture, but ...
| | The Very Best Of Enya CDs (2009) With DVD
Jumpoff Vol 12 album
$21.00 Comprised of 18 tracks culled from the singer/composer's first three decades, The Very Best of Enya was pieced together by the artist herself, along with longtime collaborators Nicky and Roma Ryan. Luckily, the trio seems enamored by most of the same songs that the general public is, resulting in one of those rare "greatest-hits" collections that goes deep without depriving the listener of the essentials. With tunes like "Orinoco Flow," "Caribbean Blue," and "Book of Days" in the pot and out of the way, it's easier to appreciate hidden gems like "Cursum Perficio," "Boadicea," "Trains and Winter Rains," and "Anywhere Is." Also notable is the inclusion of "May It Be" and a previously unreleased version of "Aníron (I Desire)," both ...

| | Tree Fort Angst Last Page In The Book Of Love CD (2002)
Jumpoff Vol 12 songs
$12.65 Last Page in the Book of Love is an update of the previous 22-song anthology Knee-Deep in the Rococo Excess of Tree Fort Angst released by the Bus Stop Label in 1997. Like that disc, this collection has all the tracks from the four EPs the band released, plus the compilation appearances, split singles, and a handful of unreleased tracks. The update comes in the form of eight more bonus unreleased tracks, including two sprightly live songs, "The One That Got Away" and "Fairweather Friend." Indie pop completists will be glad to have such a comprehensive collection of Tree Fort Angst's work. ~ Tim Sendra
By hook or by crook, this D.C./Baltimore-area band has eked out recordings, first with a cassette-only LP in 1991, and then via four 7" singles, a flexidisc, and one track each on nine compilation LPs. That's not only more than the most anal indie kid could collect without knocking over his grandma for her purse, but it's pure dedication from a band who probably doesn't have much cash. Their reward is this overview, a 22-songer (including two bonus tracks) that not only summarizes 15 tracks from the above, but tacks on seven new and unreleased cuts for anyone who was collecting the group. Led by Terry Banks, who came to attention while overseas as a member of Sarah label band St. Christopher, his own group's mix of the Sarah twee pop strum and hum and the old Creation label/C-86 hard jangle (with a little Wedding Present) form nifty little ditties with clever lyrics. ~ Jack Rabid
