| | Asking Alexandria Stand Up And Scream CD (2009)
Funk Zone
$11.49 Personnel: Ben Bruce, Ben Bruce (vocals, guitar). Audio Mixer: Joey Sturgis. Recording information: The Foundation Recording Studio. Photographers: Phill Mamula; Phill Mamula. The flurry of post-hardcore activity in the `00s is a formidable area to keep tabs on, even for hardened fans of heavy music; new hybrids continue to redefine the genre making for ever more unlikely, previously inconceivable, combinations. Enter U.K.-based unit Asking Alexandria, who blend screamo's angst-ridden intensity with the epic synthscapes and club-styled beats of trance-electronica. The band's debut, STAND UP AND SCREAM, true to its title, offers a lot of screaming (of the now standard melodic, emo-influenced variety), contrasted with growling (of the now standard metalcore variety), garnished with the occasional four-on-the-floor ...

| | Daft Punk Human After All CD (2005)
Funk Zone
$11.35 Daft Punk: Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, Thomas Bangalter (various instruments). Daft Punk has always been one of dance music's most flexible -- and accessible -- acts, spanning the relentless pulse of Homework and the lush, sprawling Discovery with a distinctive wit and playfulness that made fans of electronic music diehards and indie rockers alike. Though the long-awaited Human After All retains that playfulness, it's the duo's simplest album, which oddly enough, makes it their most difficult to embrace at first. Human After All was made in six weeks, and sounds like it -- and not always in a good way: the quick-and-dirty recording process and limited palette of grainy synths, vocoders, and guitars do lend a stripped-down, spontaneous feel, but just as often, this minimal approach feels like it's supporting minimal ideas. Most of Human After All's tracks ...

| | Fulton Read How Rocks Become Mountains CD (2007)
Funk Zone
$11.39 In the history of music, quality original artists have been recognized by their raw, sincere, distinct sounds. From Bob Dylan to Nine Inch Nails, these artists’ unique music truly is the sound that resonates in them and pushes itself out. Echoing that same sincerity but communicating their own unique sound, Fulton Read crafts songs fundamentally about the life experience- be it love, hurt, joy or pain –and recognizing the need to celebrate feeling anything and enjoy being alive. It is that life philosophy that resonates to Fulton Read’s fans. Since the release of their first EP in early 2005, songs like ‘Hope You Never Go’ and ‘I’d Love to See Live’ offered fans a welcome change of scene(ry) with some enjoyable, feel-good music. Their refreshing blend of piano pop and classic rock hits you with a strikingly original familiarity. With a great response from listeners, the EP spread throughout the Houston, TX area music scene gaining fans and opening many opportunities. Simply the fan response allowed Fulton Read to thrive- performing with national touring acts such as Circa Survive, Say Anything, Limbeck, and The Format; drawing large crowds in local venues, and directing a live collaboration with an orchestra performing their written arrangements. Soon following their acclaimed orchestra show was the self-released LP, ‘How Rocks Become Mountains’ at the end of 2005. After band member musical chairs settled, the final lineup was chiseled away to: Anthony (piano/vocals), Chris (bass), Lou (guitar/vocals), and Stephen (drums). The guys (all just nearing twentysomething now) have written more material than one-hit wonder Frankie Goes to Hollywood’s entire recorded catalog. Within the limits of independent promotion and support, Fulton Read has recorded in different professional recording studios for multiple sessions, played nearly a hundred shows, and sold out 1000 copies of their LP (in less than a year of its release) -all within one city’s surrounding area with marginal Myspace promotion. Once the group moved to Austin, TX in 2006, they began spreading a free Demo EP around the region ...
