$13.19 When an artist wants to be truly harsh and blistering, density can be a highly effective tool. In avant-garde jazz, density is the thing that makes Charles Gayle, Albert Ayler, and post-1964 John Coltrane much harsher than AACM icons like Anthony Braxton and Roscoe Mitchell -- and in metal, density is what gives Slayer's God Hates Us All a claustrophobic quality that you don't get from the old-school fantasy metal of Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Ronnie James Dio, and Black Sabbath. Density is a big part of what Demon Hunter does on this self-titled debut album; when the alternative metal band is in the mood for maximum brutality, it pummels the listener with a dense, noisy, highly abrasive metal/punk assault. But harshness is only part of what Demon Hunter does on this CD. While some alterna-metal bands like to be punishing 100 percent of the time, Demon ...
| | 7: The Best Of Stryper CD (2003) Remastered
45 Days CD music
$8.49 Recorded between 1984 & 2003. Includes liner notes by Michael Sweet.
Throughout rock history, all great bands spawn quite a bit of similar-sounding offspring -- and the mighty Van Halen were no different. Throughout the '80s, a plethora of VH disciples appeared on the scene -- many of which happened to also hail from the same locale, Hollywood. Musically, Stryper were quite similar to the Van Halen boys, but vocally, singer Michael Sweet was more a kin to Styx's Dennis DeYoung. The pairing of both styles won Stryper a large following, and for a stretch of several years, scored several MTV hits, all of which are neatly compiled on 2003's 7: The Best of Stryper. While Stryper's lyrical message did not reflect either the party-hearty (Mötley Crüe) or the "demonic" (W.A.S.P.) bands of the era, they were cut from the same musical cloth. As a result, Stryper were known primarily as a rock band ("Soldiers Under Command," "Free," ...

45 Days album
$28.25 Noah and the Whale's second album finds frontman Charlie Fink ruminating over his failed relationship with Laura Marling, a fellow songwriter (and former love interest) who played a key role in the band's debut. With music serving as his therapy, Fink fills THE FIRST DAYS OF SPRING with lush soundscapes and folksy melancholy, finding the beauty that exists in the neutral territory between both camps. This is a cinematic album, one that's meant to be heard in conjunction with its accompanying film (also titled THE FIRST DAYS OF SPRING, available as part of the album's deluxe edition), and the track list unfolds in appropriate blockbuster fashion. Several tracks set the scene, others advance the plot, and two instrumental pieces serve as gorgeous transition pieces. Laura Marling is nowhere to be found, ...
