Natalie Wood's last film follows two research scientists (Louise Fletcher, Christopher Walken) who invent a machine that can record sensory experiences. Two scientists, Michael and Karen Brace are developing a virtual reality system that sends sensory inputs into the brain and can record sights, sounds, feelings, and even dreams. The military attempts to take over the project when a senior worker begins to die of a heart attack and uses the system to tape the experience. They will do anything to get it. Natalie Wood's last film. Natalie Wood died on November 29, 1981, only five days before she would have completed filming her role. She drowned in a mysterious boating accident that also involved co-star Christopher Walken and her husband Robert Wagner. Only one scene was altered, with actor Joe Dorsey replacing Wood in a scene with Walken.
"Brainstorm" was special effects wizard Douglas Trumbull's second directorial effort, after 1972's "Silent Running."
Additional crew: Robert Jeffords & Eugene Mazzola (assistant directors); Stanislav and Christina Grof (experiental sequence consultants); Durk Pearson (scientific consultant); Sandy Shaw (scientific consultant); Omnivision (special purpose lenses); Don Baker (Compsy [computer-synthesized] effects supervisor); Mark Stetson (action props & miniatures supervisor); Matthew Yuricich (matte artist); Robert Hippard (post-production coordinator); Jack Hinkle (assistant editor visual effects); Michael Backauskas (optical lineup); Richard Hollander (Compsy technical supervisor); Chuck Cowles (optical camera operator); and Evans Wetmore (consulting engineer).
Estimated budget: $18 million. Trumbull was forced to go to insurance company Lloyd's of London to secure $6 million of that budget to complete the special effects.
Filmed at Entertainment Effects Group's studios and on location in North Carolina in 1981. Color by Metrocolor. Sound is six-track magnetic Dolby Stereo.

Brainstorm Movie Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) AHitchcock Type Movie Great Suspence, and a Terrific ending Submitted by Papaws1 (Hopkinsville,Ky USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
A very fine work of Sci Fi This is a tragically underrated movie. It is years ahead of its time. As a fine work of Sci Fi, it starts by inventing an almost possible piece of technology and proceeds to explore its social, political and spiritual aspects. And it has a cracking pace, even for modern standards.
It was made ten years before the public began to make use of the internet, or talked about "virtual reality". But it has in it references to hacking, irc, email, laser digital technology, psychological programming, parent's fear for the children's exposure to malevolent images (think the internet), the possibility of technology as a means to bring people together, and finally an interface to explore the most remote areas of the human psyche and soul.
I wished it was available as a region 2 so I could buy it in the UK. Submitted by quark_quark_2001 (London, UK.) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful. This review is for a different format.
Virtual reality circa 1983 The movie is about a virtual reality headset device, much of which has come to pass in current technology. But what is really unique about this movie is how the device allows the husband and wife to see each other from the other person's point of view. It explains and solves the spousal relationship problem in just a few seconds that hit you right between the eyes, which can save a person many times the price of the movie in counseling fees. Don't miss this one! Submitted by d_t_h_o_r_n (Cleveland OH USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No This review is for a different format.
The Future is Now This movie which was released in 1983, asessentially a Sci-Fi movie is now on the verge of reality.
I found the story line to be very thought provoking.
The concept of virtual reality is fascinating. When the technology catches up with the concept,it will surely make a significant impact on how people spend some of their leisure time (and money).
The movie introduces us to just a few of potential applications for this scientific breakthrough.
The movie gets a little "Hollywoodish" as it progresses, and the inevitable bad guys, (this time disguised as US Military personel), get into the act.
Overall, I would recommend this movie for it's introduction to the world of virtual reality.
After the movie grab a coffee, sit with some friends and discuss the pros and cons of this emerging technology. Submitted by a reviewer (Ottawa, Ontario, Canada) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No This review is for a different format.

The sole remaining survivors are the family chauffeur, Bruno (Chaney), sexually precocious sisters Elizabeth (Beverly Washburn) and Virginia (Jill Banner) and their animal-like brother Ralph (Sid Haig).
