This Detroit-bred garage rock outfit (whose first two records were produced by Jack White) chose the legendary Gold Dollar club in their home town as the source for a quintessential live document. Backed by the occasional horn section, and boasting songs largely absent from more formal releases, LIVE barrels and bellows through seven ceaseless stompers. Cheekily named frontman Johnny Walker and co. cause a particularly noteworthy racket on the half-time, slide-guitar feast "Up Jumped The Devil," the sax-supported boogie of "Going Back To Memphis," and the "Brown Sugar"-like riffs buzzing their way through "Teenage Heartattack." Rock & roll, pure and simple, captured in its rawest element.
The Soledad Brothers: Johnny Walker (vocals, guitar, harmonica); Oliver Henry (vocals, guitar, saxophone); Ben Swank (drums).
Rolling Stone (6/26/03, p.81) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...The blues-based stomp is familiar, but the unexpected tenor-sax runs sizzle like hot bacon grease..." Mojo (Publisher) (3/03, p.106) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...[The] live set proves that the Soledads are the most blazingly authentic rockin' blues combo since George Thorogood's Destroyers..." Live songs
$11.18 (MP3 Available for Download) With Adam Lambert, American Idol finally got a finalist who was completely, utterly contemporary, aware of what's hip in music and culture and aware of how music is made and consumed in 2009, never seeming to try to follow fads or set trends, just embodying the time. Mercifully, he came in second to Kris Allen, for if he came in first he may have had to tame his self-styled glamazon ways. A second place finish allowed Lambert to come out of the closet and indulge in his penchant for theater on his debut, For Your Entertainment -- which isn't quite the same thing as camp, for if Adam Lambert is anything, he's earnest about his dress-up, never winking at the audience because he doesn't think there's much funny about his glitter and mascara: that's just what pop stars are supposed to do. He's learned that by listening to his stacks of Queen and Bowie records, from watching old MTV videos on YouTube, from living in a present that always competes with the ever-present past, so he takes it all at face value, mixing up arena rock guitars, new wave, disco, operatic overdubs with a constant electro pulse, glassy modern R&B, and the vague Euro strains of new millennium teen pop. All this makes For Your Entertainment very, very modern in a way few mainstream pop albums are in 2009, whether they're products of the American Idol/19 machine or not: Max Martin, Dr. Luke, Rivers Cuomo, P!nk, Lady GaGa, Linda Perry, Ryan Tedder, Muse's Matthew Bellamy, and Justin Hawkins of the ...
| | Talking Heads - Stop Making Sense DVD (1984) Widescreen
Live album
$24.09 Those who aren't familiar with the work of seminal 1980s band The Talking Heads may find themselves becoming instant fans after viewing this incredibly entertaining concert film. It starts with David Byrne stepping out alone on empty stage with an acoustic guitar to sing "Psycho Killer." The rest of the musicians follow one by one and the stage gradually fills to bursting with powerful, tightly orchestrated brilliance. Director Jonathan Demme (SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, PHILADEPLPHIA) expertly captures the music's energy, fusing cinema with performance to create something more than the sum of its parts. Through it all, Byrne comes off as a charismatic artist ...
| | Bon Jovi The Circle CDs (2009) With DVD
Live CD music
$15.55 Bon Jovi's 2007 effort, LOST HIGHWAY, found New Jersey's finest brandishing a Nashville-tinged, commercial rock/country crossover sound that wasn't too far a stretch from their usual arena rocking anthems for the Everyman. And where that album sometimes tried too hard to fit into the conventions of trad country, sacrificing some of the fist-pumping potency of their best `90s-era efforts in ...

| | Better Daze One Street Over Vinyl LP (1996)
Live album
$12.05 Better Daze is Paul Scriver and Andrew Jervis, a talented duo who write, produce and play numerous instruments. Their chief love is jazzy groove music, the kind that owes as much to house and electronica as it does to Miles and Blakey. This uneven but ultimately rewarding disc finds them gathering various fellow travelers around them for a session of sonic adventurism that leads them into varied, but primarily cool and downtempo, musical territories. Jazz is the thread that binds everything together -- the muted trumpet at the beginning of "Needing More," athe string bass that holds down the groove on "Modus Operandi" -- but ...
| | Robert Wyatt Ruth Is Stranger Than Richard Vinyl LP (1975)
Live CD music
$30.39 (MP3 Available for Download) Following as it did a year after ROCK BOTTOM, this 1975 release cemented Robert Wyatt's reputation as the creator of some of the most evocative and personal music created in the twentieth century. The poetry of the lyrics is perfectly mirrored in a music that draws on jazz, European folk idioms and a magical ingredient that is purely Wyatt. Wyatt, like Brian Eno, Gary Windo, Fred Frith and Mongezi Feza, is one of the rare artists who can effectively create a musical universe that seems a perfect articulation of his own vision. The entire work plays ...

| | Panic At The Disco Pretty. Odd Vinyl LP (2008)
Live music CDs
$16.29 Panic At the Disco subverted the potential for a sophomore slump by taking a sharp left turn from the emo-fused pop-punk of their debut, A FEVER YOU CAN'T SWEAT OUT. Rather than retracing the footsteps that brought them popularity, Panic At the Disco made PRETTY. ODD., a headlong dive into pure 1960s pop psychedelia. From the floral print cover-art (framed by a vintage photo album-style border) to the artfully constructed retro ...
