Soundtrack English Screen version of the musical "Carmen Jones," which adapted Bizet's opera "Carmen" for an African-American cast. Army soldier Joe falls in love with Carmen, a beautiful and seductive factory worker. When he kills his sergeant during a fight, the ill-fated lovers flee to escape the police. But Carmen's faithlessness and selfishness eventually surface, and she rejects Joe for another man. But he can't let her go, and his obsessive love ultimately leads to tragedy. A sizzling screen version of Bizet's Carmen updated for an all-black cast, including an especially sizzling Dandridge. Soldier Belafonte falls for Dandridge, a seductive factory worker. The lovers flee after the soldier kills his sergeant, but Carmen's taunting faithlessness drives her lover to a crime of passion. Hammerstein provided lyrics for Bizet's melodies, and Preminger added the snap. If you're curious what all the fuss over Dandridge is about, catch this. CARMEN JONES was added to the Library of Congress National Film Registry in 1992.
Original aspect ratio: 2.55:1. Carmen Jones Reviews: "...CARMEN JONES still benefits from a star-power performance that made lead Dorothy Dandridge the first black performer to get a best-actress Oscar nomination..."

$11.89 This two-CD compilation, assembled from the Walker Brothers' three albums and various singles released by Philips between 1965 and 1967, gives a good overview of their U.K. history without limiting itself to their hits. The sound quality is good if not exceptional -- one gets the sense that another round of remastering would be in order (and while we're talking about sound, wouldn't one like to see a Mobile Fidelity reissue on the Walker Brothers or, for that matter, Scott Walker's best solo stuff?). And the track order isn't chronological -- their two best-known songs, which were not their first two U.K. singles -- occupy the opening two slots on disc one. So this set is lacking in some attributes that one would, ideally, like to se. On the other hand, all of the songs that one would like to see are here somewhere, and the annotation is thorough if not extensive. For anyone starting a collection of the classic Walker Brothers' material, this set -- which also carries the subtitle "My Ship Is Coming In" -- is a great place to start and finish, assuming that one doesn't wish to own everything that they did during their British period. ~ Bruce Eder
2009 two CD set from the '60s trio, who have become one of the most revered Pop outfits of their time. Though they were not brothers and came from California, The Walker Brothers became international stars with a slew of great singles that were as unique as they were catchy. The British and European audiences were (and remain) their most devoted fanbase, although other countries have come around to The Walker Brothers special kind of magic in recent decades. 36 tracks including 'Make It Easy On Yourself', 'The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore' and many others. Universal.

$14.69 Originally released several years before Tom Cruise’s take on the incident in the Hollywood film VALKYRIE, this thrilling historical drama details the events leading up to one of the most prominent assassination attempts of Adolph Hitler by his own soldiers. Sebastian Koch (BLACK BOOK) stars as Claus von Stauffenberg, the spirited leader of the well-organized but unfortunately flawed conspiracy.
In 1944, a group of high command officers plot an attempt against Hitler, and one of the leaders of the conspiracy, Stauffenberg, goes to a meeting with the Fuhrer in charge of exploding the place. However, Hitler survives and the officers are executed. Director: Jo Baier. Stars: Sebastian Koch (The Lives of Others).

$22.45 This adaptation of Henryk Sienkiewicz's novel was made on a big budget in the author's native country, Poland. Set during the reign of the Roman emperor Nero, QUO VADIS tells the story of a young soldier, Marcus Vinicius, who falls under the sway of Christianity when he falls in love with Lygia, a believer in the growing religion.
Acclaimed filmmaker Jerzy Kawalerowicz directs his last film--one of the most lavish and expensive films ever made in Poland. This familiar tale of Christianity set against the backdrop of Emperor Nero and the burning of Rome begins when soldier Marcus Vinicius returns to the Eternal City for rest and relaxation. Polish action star Boguslaw Linda costars as Vinicius's uncle Petronius, an official in good standing with the corrupt Emperor. Vinicius's loyalties are tested when he becomes interested in the teachings of Jesus through his sweetheart Lygia.

Carmen Jones film
$21.49 Russian master Aleksandr Sokurov (THE SUN, RUSSIAN ARK, MOTHER AND SON) has produced another majestic achievement with ALEXANDRA. In a rare instance of working from his own original script, Sokurov tells the simple tale of a woman in the twilight of her life who embarks on a special journey. As the story unfolds, Sokurov's deeper purpose is revealed, resulting in a work that speaks profoundly about the corrosive nature of war. Opera star Galina Vishnevskaya is Alexandra. She hasn't seen her grandson in seven years and, understanding that her life is coming to an end, she decides to visit him at his army camp in war-torn Chechnya. What at first is a beautiful reunion gradually becomes conflicted, as Alexandra is forced to accept the painful realization that she may no longer be the most important figure in her grandson's life. Furthermore, the strain the war is placing on these young men, combined with their restrictive conditions, is even harder for her to bear. When her grandson must return to work, Alexandra floats around the camp, having brief but profound interactions with many different soldiers. While these exchanges vary from the humorous to the dramatic, there is a striking purity and simplicity to Sokurov's overall vision--not to mention Vishnevskaya's unforgettable, heartbreaking performance--that makes ALEXANDRA feel universal and profound.
