| | Marduk Opus Nocturne Vinyl LP Record Marduk Discography of CDs
Marduk has always been the Swedish blastaholic cousin of the '90s Norse underground scene, the group stripping itself down to the four basic elements of extreme metal -- drums, guitar, bass, tortured rasps -- while staring down their crooked, stubborn, corpse-painted noses at all the black metal pantywaists cradling their keyboards and speed-limit signs. Obviously, restraint was an underutilized entry in Marduk's dictionary, and the band's hard-headed approach resulted in many albums like Opus Nocturne (the third full-length in a seemingly endless discography), which offers a few inspired moments -- an anthemic riff here, a bleak lyrical turn-of-the-screw there -- amidst a blurry avalanche of blastbeat-ridden deathrashola. Grandiose midtempo slog "Materialized in Stone" and artsy-fartsy, classically influenced, spoken word number "Opus Nocturne" (a bit of a stretch, yes, but admirable within the context of Marduk's output) are the standouts here, while "Sulphur Souls," "Autumnal Reaper," and too many others race by like highway traffic, occasionally meriting a reactionary nod or shrug, but little else. Sure, Marduk is worthy of some acclaim, having carried the flag for no-bones-about-it, punch-in-the-nose black metal since the early '90s, but the band always struggled to put together a consistently memorable album -- especially one that didn't use blastbeats as an ever-present creative crutch. Opus Nocturne, unfortunately, is no different. ~ John Serba

Opus Nocturne CD music
$12.79 This album is a sort of summit conference of underground heavy music. Guitarists and vocalists Scott "Wino" Weinrich (the Obsessed, Saint Vitus, Spirit Caravan, the Hidden Hand) and Scott Kelly of Neurosis are grizzled veterans whose hoarse, guttural shouts and instantly recognizable, distorted guitar tones carry the authority of years of hard touring and introspective yet still crushing rock, while bassist Al Cisneros (Sleep, Om) and Melvins drummer Dale Crover shake the earth with their gigantic rhythms. The five tracks were laid down in three days, with some minor overdubs done shortly afterward, and they have the organic feel of jams transformed into cohesive songs through application of the group mind. Wino's usual biker-rock riffage is frequently replaced by a more psychedelic, drifting sound with long sustained notes floating over Cisneros's trance-inducing basslines (Ted Nugent's "Stranglehold" seems like a bigger influence than the Black Sabbath catalog, particularly on "Blind for All to See"), and Crover's tribal ...

Opus Nocturne music CDs
$6.79 Also available in a 3-pack with BRITISH STEEL and POINT OF ENTRY.
In the early '80s, a new musical movement, dubbed "The New Wave of British Metal," swept across England. The conspirators include such heavy bands as Iron Maiden, Motorhead, Saxon, and Def Leppard, but Judas Priest is often credited as the originator and leader of the pack. Rob Halford's vocal histrionics and the dual guitar attack of K.K. Downing and Glen Tipton mesmerized metal-heads everywhere. While Priest had been together since the early-'70s, the band's big U.S. breakthrough came with 1982's SCREAMING FOR VENGEANCE.
Like most other metal bands that broke through in the early '80s (Motley Crue, Twisted Sister, etc.), Judas Priest took advantage of the then-developing video medium. MTV put the clip for "You Got Another Thing Coming" in heavy rotation, and the song became one of heavy metal's all-time classic anthems. Other album tracks, such as "The Hellion," "Electric Eye," "(Take These) Chains," "Devil's Child," and the title composition, were all prime metal cuts. With its perfect balance of heavy riffing and melodicism, SCREAMING FOR VENGEANCE is considered by many to be among the finest heavy metal albums ever made.
Judas Priest rebounded from the shaky Point of Entry with Screaming for Vengeance, arguably the strongest album of their early-'80s ...

$9.89 Frontman Rob Halford has considered this to be Judas Priest's SGT. PEPPER, and it's easy to see why. The album expanded upon the group's debut by tackling a variety of styles, utilizing dynamics to striking effect, and establishing the essential guitar interplay between Glenn Tipton and K.K. Downing. "Victim Of Changes" may be forever known for its snarling riffs and Halford's startling final scream, but its subdued mid-section ...
| | Converge Axe To Fall CD (2009) Digipak
Opus Nocturne album
$12.75 Converge's eighth studio album is packed with guest performances by kindred spirits from Massachusetts and beyond. "Effigy," one of four songs on the album that comes in under the two-minute mark, features Steve Brodsky and Adam McGrath of Cave In on guitar and that group's drummer, J.R. Conners, behind the kit. Uffe Cederlund of Disfear takes over lead guitar on "Wishing Well," while Steve Von Till of Neurosis sings on "Cruel Bloom" and Genghis Tron' Mookie Singerman does guest vocals on the seven-minute album closer, "Wretched World." But it's the core group that delivers the most astonishing displays of hardcore fury and progressive musical exploration on AXE TO FALL. Opening cut "Dark Horse," propelled by a Disfear-esque riff so insane it'll make you think your CD is playing at the wrong speed, kicks off a breathless sprint that lasts all the way to the doomy, noisy fifth track, "Worms Will Feed." It's astonishing that Converge have time to put this much thought into their music instead of just cranking out one more rote album, but AXE TO FALL is a big step forward for them.

Opus Nocturne CD music
$5.99 Despite recording two hit studio albums with Black Sabbath (1980's HEAVEN AND HELL and 1981's THE MOB RULES) and playing throughout the world to huge crowds, Ronnie James Dio left the band in 1982-the year of his final release with Sabbath, the in-concert LIVE EVIL. As soon as the announcement of his departure was made official, Dio began to put together his first solo project. Joining him were former Rainbow bandmate Jimmy Bain on bass, former Sabbath bandmate Vinny Appice on drums, ex-Sweet Savage guitar hero Vivian Campbell, and newcomer Claude Schnell on keyboards.
HOLY DIVER, Dio's band debut, was issued in 1983. The album quickly became a favorite among headbangers worldwide and eventually earned ...

With High Uinta High, Jeremy Chatelain, the bassist for Jets to Brazil, has created a genuine and resonant alt-country album on par with the work of Beachwood Sparks, Wilco, and Whiskeytown. That is saying a lot for a solo debut, and perhaps even more surprising is the fact that this set of twangy, country-tinged rock tunes was put together by a post-punk all-star lineup as opposed to a group of roots rockers. Chatelain recruited his friends to ...
