AMERICAN GRAFFITI presents a powerful collage of youth on the brink of maturity just before the assassination of J.F.K.. Based on George Lucas's own teenage hot-rodding days in Modesto, California, this brilliant, bittersweet comedy inspired numerous other productions, including the long-running TV series HAPPY DAYS. Lucas's second feature film (following THX 1138), AMERICAN GRAFFITI contains an early screen appearance by Harrison Ford, who would figure heavily in the director's next movie, the sci-fi epic STAR WARS. The film follows one night in the lives of several recently graduated high school students. The genial Steve (Ron Howard) prepares to leave for college the next day, and Laurie (Cindy Williams), his girlfriend, is upset by his impending departure. Laurie's brother, Curt (Richard Dreyfuss), the class intellectual, is also slated for college, but he has serious doubts about his future. Also included here are the hopeless nerd (Charles Martin Smith) and the eternally cool drag racer, John (Paul ...

$22.19 Johnny Depp and Christian Bale emerge from two of the biggest blockbuster series of all time (Pirates of the Caribbean and Batman, respectively) to star in this crime drama from HEAT director Michael Mann. Depp stars as charismatic 1930s gangster John Dillinger, whose notorious bank robberies have turned him into a celebrity during the Depression era. The rise in crime has J. Edgar Hoover (Billy Crudup) desperate to have his newly created FBI take down gangsters such as Dillinger, "Pretty Boy" Floyd (Channing Tatum), and "Baby Face" Nelson (Stephen Graham). Enter Agent Melvin Purvis (Bale), an ambitious crimefighter sent to Chicago to capture Dillinger and his gang. The criminal has evaded the law before, but he is drawn to the Second City by the beautiful Billie Frechette (Marion Cotillard).
Though PUBLIC ENEMIES boasts big names, it feels more like an arthouse offering than a typical gangster picture. With its intimately shot violence and 1930s setting, the film is more BONNIE AND CLYDE than GOODFELLAS. Mann and director of photography ...

Live Fast, Die Young video
$22.45 For the follow-up to his critically lauded social-realist dramas MAN PUSH CART and CHOP SHOP, director Ramin Bahrani leaves New York City behind and returns to his home town of Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Though the scenery has changed, Bahrani’s tender, humane vision remains. As with those previous films, Bahrani focuses his story on a cultural outsider, the type of person who usually gets relegated to a movie's background. Solo (Souleymane Sy Savane) is a Senegalese taxi driver whose latest fare, a weathered and despondent old Southerner named William (Red West), offers him big money to drive to a mountain peak, where it appears that William is going to commit suicide. A good-natured and kind-spirited man, Solo is disturbed by this revelation. Out of a deep sense of purpose, he embarks on a mission to save William.
Working with his main creative collaborator, cinematographer Michael Simmonds, Bahrani casts a luminous spell over his deceptively simple tale. The director, who also edits his films, keeps the story moving forward while allowing it to breathe. He also extracts flawless, fully lived-in performances from Savane and West. Though Bahrani’s previous films have been deservedly praised, he has vaulted himself into the top ranks of American indie directors with GOODBYE ...
