(6 Customer Reviews)
Best known for her run on AMERICAN IDOL'S 2007 season (on which she placed third behind Blake Lewis and Jordin Sparks), singer Melinda Doolittle boasts a confident, neo-soul style. Doolittle's debut, COMING BACK TO YOU, released in 2009, harks back to the golden age of Motown and Stax/Volt soul, with tunes driven by rich arrangements, driving rhythms, horns, organ, and light strings (the old school-flavored mid-tempo ballad "It's Your Love" is a case in point). There are touches here of contemporary R&B and smooth jazz-pop, but regardless of the style, the focus is Doolittle's voice, which wails, growls, and croons in a way that will leave few unsatisfied customers.

Entertainment Weekly (p.97) - "Doolittle channels Tina Turner and Aretha Franklin over live-band arrangements that feel fresh-faced and old-school at the same time..." -- Grade: B+ Melinda Doolittle Coming Back To You Songs Coming Back To You Music Review Average Rating: (4.2 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Wasting talent Crowell can do better than this...you take a talented young lady with a beautiful, riviting voice, and give her a bunch of clunky songs? I can see this CD ending up on the dime rack in Walmart, and this wonderful woman drifting off into oblivion because she wasnt given the right material to make her a star. Get yourself a good song writer, and go out there and show the world what you have. The alternative is lounge lizard status and you are MUCH TOO GIFTEZD to end up on the sale rack of unknowns. Love it! She really reminds me of the young Aretha Franklin... funky, fresh and a great voice. Nothing is over done, nice song selections and a '60's feel. This is a great album! Submitted by newlpa123 (Minneapolis, MN) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.
Ode to Old School This collection of music has an old school feel but very refreshing to say the least. Melinda Doolite voice is a timeless classic. I urge anyone who loves lyrics, and music with attitude to check it out. Submitted by geecee09 (Lisle,IL) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.
Aretha Franklin? Lets not be silly... This was a decent cd from what I can tell but lets not put her in the same category with Aretha Franklin. There is only one Queen of Soul. Submitted by blacc_steel (Raleigh, NC) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 2 found this helpful.
Worth the wait Melinda Doolittle was a big favorite during her season of American Idol. I, for one, tuned in every time the show came on so I could hear what Melinda had come up with that week. From soul and R and B to classic love songs, she proved she could do it all.
So it is with.this new CD. There are cuts that originated in the fifties ("I Will Always Love You" and "Wonder Why") all the way through the girl group sounds of the sixties ("It's Your Love") and soul sounds of present day.
If it's versatility that you're after, this might do it for you. Submitted by stevek491 (Oklahoma City, OK, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
