Trans-Siberian Orchestra's second album, Christmas Attic, may not be as focused or serious as Christmas Eve, but it is just as enjoyable and maybe even more consistent, thanks to Paul O'Neill's increasingly impressive compositions and an improved musicality. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

| | Art Tatum Piano Starts Here: Live At The Shrine (2008)
Classical Moods
$13.69 This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players.
Few jazz pianists could ever hope to rival the technical mastery of Art Tatum. From the 1930s on through the `50s, Tatum's dazzling facility made it seem as if two pianists were playing at once. Though he often performed solo, his virtuosity allowed him to make the transition from swing to bebop effortlessly. Tatum's eclectic style also reflected influences from blues and classical music, and from early jazz and pop music of the time.
Long considered a classic album, PIANO STARTS HERE was assembled from studio and live sources from 1933 and 1949, respectively. Thanks to 21st-century technology however, PIANO has received a new lease on life, containing previously edited selections presented in their entirety, previously unissued tunes, and vastly improved sound quality. For lovers of the history of the jazz piano, PIANO STARTS HERE is essential.

$31.29 | | Sumi Jo Christmas Album CD (2001)
Classical Moods
$29.09 Celebrated soprano Sumi Jo delivers a warm and bright collection of mostly lesser-known religious and secular holiday-themed pieces on Erato's 2001 release The Christmas Album, with a handful of popular seasonal works adding a comfortable familiarity. Accompanied on several tracks by simple violin and fortepiano, and on others by the rich VokalEnsemble Köln, these works by Bach, Mozart, Scarlatti, Vivaldi, and others are given an intimate baroque feel, and the use of these small ensembles suits Jo's voice warmly. While the whole album embraces this gentle, intimate feel, the high point comes in the first track; the unaccompanied "I Wonder as I Wander," hauntingly adapted from a traditional Appalachian folk song. This piece stands crisply apart from the rest of the pastorellas like the last moments of chill before coming in to sit beside the fire on a December night. While this most certainly won't end up next to Ella Fitzgerald Wishes You a Swinging Christmas in many peoples' music collections, Sumi Jo's The Christmas Album will deservedly garner the rapt attention of classical aficionados during the holidays. ~ Zac Johnson
