A Southern rock Christmas album? Hey, it makes as much sense as Run-DMC's "Christmas in Hollis," and the good news is that the Lynyrd Skynyrd boys--along with special guests the Charlie Daniels Band and .38 Special--truly get into the spirit with a nice mix of seasonal standards (rock and otherwise) and originals. Among the latter, the Daniels Band provides a frankly terrifying "Devil Went Down to Georgia"-derived take on "Santa Claus is Coming to Town," while Skynyrd crunch through Chuck Berry's "Run, Rudolph Run" with Stones-like aplomb. On the originals front, .38 Special score big with "Mama's Song," a Southern rock power pop hybrid in their best '80s style, although it must be said that these self-proclaimed wild-eyed Southern boys have a sentimental streak a mile wide (and when their song is followed by Skynyrd's near-obscene "Santa Claus Wants Some Lovin'," it's a tad disconcertin'...). In any case, the album concludes, nicely, with a little harmonizing by the entire Skynyrd family (kids, relatives, road crew, dogs, etc). Fun stuff. Coming from a guy who released an album called MORNING WOOD, a song called "Rhymes with Truck", and has appeared naked as a jaybird on an album cover, one might think MAKE IT CHRISTMAS is a "put the kids to bed affair" with all the breast jokes and beer drinking that usually come with Rodney Carrington. It's anything but as having teenage kids has sent Carrington's moral compass in a completely different direction, one that points to tradition, family values, good will towards man, and comfy sweaters, especially come Christmastime. MAKE IT CHRISTMAS is the country comedian/television star turning Johnny Mathis with his surprisingly good and extremely comfortable voice delivering a mixed-bag of Christmas standards, new holiday music--including Carrington's own "The Presents Under the Tree (Better Be For Me)"--plus a handful of well-chosen, lesser known numbers such as David Foster's "Grown Up Christmas List." This album includes more than 20 min. more compared to the further release of the legendary "Nosferatu" soundtrack. For the first time you get the complete soundtrack and the songs of the album "Bruder des Schattens - Sohne des Lichts" which have been used of the film together on one album, and this for the first time. Florian Fricke's soundtracks always added a distinctive dimension to the films of Werner Herzog and that's especially true of his recordings for Nosferatu: Phantom der Nacht (starring Klaus Kinski as the most spectacularly grotesque Count Dracula ever). This CD brings together Brüder des Schattens, Söhne des Lichts and Nosferatu: Fantôme de la Nuit, two 1978 Popol Vuh albums containing material for Herzog's film. The director drew initially on the first of these records but subsequently asked Fricke for more music conveying fear and dread. In response, Fricke raided his archive of unused work -- this was the origin of the second record. Featured prominently in the film, "Brüder des Schattens, Söhne des Lichts" moves from a spectral choral beginning to a lighter, almost pastoral conclusion with piano, guitar, and sitar, echoing the chiaroscuro dynamic of its title ("Brothers of Shadow, Sons of Light"). That brighter, expansive mood recurs on several tracks with a more pronounced Eastern groove: "Through Pain to Heaven," for example, with its mesmerizing interplay of guitars ...
