Klaus Schulze and Australian singer Lisa Gerrard (formerly of Dead Can Dance) proved to be an appealing combination on their studio recording Farscape, and they also work well together on Rheingold: Live at the Loreley. Gerrard doesn't appear on all of this release's moody, hypnotic material, but when she is featured, her performances add a lot to this two-DVD set -- which is a live album more than anything. All of DVD one is devoted to a July 18, 2008 concert in St. Goarshausen, Germany, while DVD two contains the 65-minute documentary "The Real World of Klaus Schulze" and a 55-minute interview (the interviewer is singer/guitarist Steven Wilson, a member of the British progressive rock band Porcupine Tree). Schulze's hardcore fans will appreciate the documentary and the interview (Wilson discusses, among other things, the contributions and influence of Tangerine Dream), but the concert in St. Goarshausen is Rheingold's main attraction -- and Schulze is in very good form on the songs that feature Gerrard (the 14-minute "Wellgunde" and the 39-minute "Loreley") as well as the instrumentals that don't ("Nothung," "Wotan," and the 24-minute opener "Alberich"). Some viewers may argue that some of the performances drag on longer than they need to and ask, "Did "Loreley" really need to last 39 minutes, and did "Alberich" really need to last 24 minutes?" But considering that Schulze's creativity is at a high level, one can easily live with his excesses (or perhaps even find them enjoyable). Overall, Schulze had a creatively successful night in St. Goarshausen, and the presence of Gerrard on some of the performances is a definite plus. ~ Alex Henderson

On the 18th July 2008 Klaus Schulze played at the Night Of The Prog III festival, an extraordinary concert on the Open Air Stage Loreley in St. Goarshausen, Germany. | | Chris Stamey Travels In The South CD (2004)
Rheingold: Live At The Loreley music CDs
$13.75 A founding leader of the influential cult band the dB's, Chris Stamey has spent most of last 15 years producing other people's discs (Alejandro Escovedo, Yo La Tengo, Whiskeytown) rather than creating his own. Not counting a 1995 instrumental album, Travels in the South marks his first record since 1991, when he released both the solo Fireworks and Mavericks, a duet disc with his old dB's partner Peter Holsapple. South, however, shows little sign of rustiness. The album kicks off with the glorious "14 Shades of Green," a chimey gem that takes a nostalgic look at a hometown. This leadoff track also establishes the theme of traveling that runs through the disc. Songs like "Insomnia," "Ride," and the title track all touch upon the feeling of life in transit. The sublime "In Spanish Harlem" takes a Paul Simon-esque look at New York City but with a decidedly eased-back Southern tempo. The entire album, in fact, rides along at a leisurely pace, with the majority of songs surpassing the four-minute mark. But Stamey uses his production savvy to build these songs into "mid-life symphonies," to make Brian Wilson's phrase more age-appropriate. A solitary ...
| | Mission Of Burma Gun to the Head CD 2 CD Set
Rheingold: Live At The Loreley songs
$12.75 Taking its cue from late-1970s British art-punks like Wire and Gang of Four, Boston's Mission of Burma developed a unique, angular sound that was at once pre-eminent in and definitive of the burgeoning US post-punk scene. For a band whose initial studio recordings consisted only of one full album and one EP, they were enormously influential, so this compilation comes off like the Dead Sea Scrolls ...

| | Klaus Schulze Inter*Face CD (1985)
Rheingold: Live At The Loreley CD music
$14.59 Inter*Face is a disappointment. Klaus Schulze combines Berlin school electronica with rock & roll textures better than most. He does so on this album and he also incorporates some (ouch!) disco beats. There are four tracks on this CD. The first three -- about half the disc -- are run of the mill at best. Track four, the title track, is vintage Schulze. It features spacy atmospheres, experimental timbres, symphonic textures, and deep sequences. The overall CD is uneven. This is for die-hard ...

| | K T Tunstall Eye To The Telescope CD (Import) Import; United Kingdom; New Version
Rheingold: Live At The Loreley songs
$17.09 A runaway success in the UK, EYE TO THE TELESCOPE, KT Tunstall's debut, finally hit the States in early 2006, a year after its initial release. On this assured 12-song set, the Scottish singer/songwriter mines a charmingly sensitive and intelligent vein of pop/rock that positions her somewhere in between Beth Orton and Sheryl Crow. The key to Tunstall's sound is her resonant and soulful voice, and the album's bold, but never over-the-top production only serves to further enhance her songs. Though the highlights of the disc include the jangly "Another Place to Fall," the eminently catchy "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree," and the shuffling "Suddenly I See," the entire record is surprisingly solid, easily ensuring a bright future for Tunstall.
