The hit sports movie about a high school football team is released on high-def. Bonuses: My Scene, PlayStation controller, BD Live, deleted scenes, featurettes, commentary. Based on the best-selling book by H.G. Bissinger, Peter Berg's gritty, powerful drama tells the true story of a small Texas town in which high school football is the only thing that matters. Set in 1988, FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS opens on the first day of practice for the Odessa Permian Panthers. Under intense pressure and scrutiny from the town's residents, head coach Gary Gaines (Billy Bob Thornton) nonetheless maintains a calm façade. His star player, Boobie Miles (Derek Luke), is a running back with unlimited potential, but the rest of the team is undersized and lacking killer instinct--especially quarterback Mike Winchell (Lucas Black), who's shy and short of confidence, and Don Billingsley (Garrett Hedlund), who is tormented by his father (Tim McGraw) for being too soft. When Boobie goes down on opening day with a career threatening knee injury, the season appears to be over. But Gaines won't give up, and neither will the rest of his feisty players.
Billy Bob Thornton delivers another outstanding performance in Berg's impassioned drama, as do the film's young actors (most notably Luke, Black, and Hedlund). Tobias Schliessler's fuel-injected photography and Explosion in the Sky's electrifying score make FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS an even more spectacular movie-going experience. THEATRICAL RELEASE: OCTOBER 8, 2004 Friday Night Lights Reviews: "The movie's football scenes are both realistic and exciting, with genuine moments of suspense
-- Chris Cronis, Premiere "Imbued with the aching sadness of an end-of-summer's evening, FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS has more in common with Peter Bogdanovich's THE LAST PICTURE SHOW...than other American football films..."
-- Ali Jaafar, Sight and Sound "[With] hard-tackling action, this is a solid effort from actor-turned-director Peter Berg."
-- Andrew Sumner, Uncut "[A] stringent, stirring real-life drama....Directed with smart, documentary-style briskness..."-- Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly "One of the best football movies ever, NIGHTS in the end celebrates the game."-- Mike Clark, USA Today "FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS is uplifting and troubling, partly because it is more honest than most sports movies about the high cost and short life span of high school football glory."-- A. O. Scott, New York Times "The FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS team has invested a lot of energy in the authenticity of the on-field action that dominates the film."-- Kenneth Turan, USA Today "Thornton gets inside the coach's skin. It's a subtle, soulful performance..."

LIGHTS OUT! Not the best sports movie I've ever seen, but it's decent. The last half hour is good, the rest of the movie
is pretty boring. Submitted by Lance (Lawrenceville NJ) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No This review is for a different format.
An A-list football movie!! Friday Night Lights is a truthful and superb football film. You can feel the intensity on the field, you can see it through the vibrant and kenetic editing style, and the best part of Tim McGraw's performance is you don't know you're watching Tim MrGraw. The film's soundtrack is haunting and features an echoing guitar that sweeps through the filmscape like a warm texas wind; and then you're punched by sudden flares of rock when you watch the players take the field for their games. Billy Bob Thornton Stars as a coach-under-seige who wants his team of young players to be great by showing them they can be perfect inside. I'm not a football fan but I love football movies. See this film! It's one of the finest football movies ever made!! Submitted by seran_caski (Canada) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No This review is for a different format.
Two Thumbs Up! Ya all need to get out and buy this movie. This here is some extreme football drama. I loved it! Its action packed with a lot of suprises. | | Miracle At St. Anna Blu-ray (2008) Widescreen; Dubbed; Subtitled
Friday Night Lights movie DVD
$30.49 All Spike Lee's movies, from SHE'S GOTTA HAVE IT forward, have tackled big ideas head-on using wide strokes to a paint a picture that is both impressionistic and realistic. Though not the most subtle director, Lee has consistently challenged both his audience and himself. His step into genre filmmaking with 2006's INSIDE MAN was a delightful surprise, and though he continues down this road somewhat with the World War II film MIRACLE AT ST. ANNA, he also returns with force to the realm of the big idea.
The first film ever to tell the story of the Army's all African-American Buffalo Soldier unit, MIRACLE AT ST. ANNA is inherently an important film. Yet rather than allow it to stand on its own as simply a war picture starring African-American actors, Lee takes on myriad social and historical discussions. Based on the novel of the same name by James McBride (who also wrote the script), the movie follows four soldiers as they take refuge in an Italian village after being cut off from their platoon. There are various supernatural elements ...
| | Ypf Blu-ray (2008) Dubbed
Friday Night Lights video
$47.75 This frank--and frankly hilarious--Canadian indie certainly lives up to its risqué title, but there's more going on in than just sex in this debut from writer/director Martin Gero. Though the filmmaker has plenty of experience from his work on sci-fi favorite STARGATE: ATLANTIS, this comedy presents a reality-based look at relationships in the real world. YPF follows one night in the lives of four couples and one threesome. There's a pair on their first date, with a British bad boy (Callum Blue) trying to seduce his young coworker (Diora Baird). Meanwhile, a longtime couple (Kristin Booth and Josh Dean) attempt drastic measures to drag themselves out of their sexual rut. Though Mia (Sonja Bennett) and Eric (Josh Cooke) have ended their relationship, they try to reconnect on a physical level, but some old feelings resurface. Two close friends (Carly of POPULAR fame and writer Aaron Abrams) decide to add a new dimension to their relationship, but it turns out that there may be some emotions hidden beneath their buddy-buddy interaction. And finally, there's the awkward contact between two roommates at war (Peter Oldring and Ennis Esmer) who can only agree on the hotness of one of their girlfriends (Natalie Lisinska), but they decide to spend the night as a trio. YPF is fresh and funny, and it's hard not to identify with at least one of the pairings. The dialogue is witty, but it never feels rehearsed. Though most of the actors are unknown south of the Canadian border, each of them gives a heartfelt, genuine performance that should lead to more work in the future.

| | Repo! The Genetic Opera Blu-ray (2008) Widescreen; Subtitled; DTS Sound
Friday Night Lights review
$23.35 Begun in 2002 as a Los Angeles stage production by writers Darren Smith and Terrence Zdunich, REPO! THE GENETIC OPERA was designed as a gory, comedic Grand Guignol to appeal more to club goers than fans of musical theater. One fan, aspiring director Darren Lynn Bousman, who has since worked on the SAW franchise, vowed to one day direct a film version of the show. Six years (and five SAW films) later, he has made good on his promise with a bizarre, gory, and unique piece of work that is as sure to entertain as it is to polarize its audience. In the year 2056, following an epidemic of human organ failure, the GeneCo Corporation--owned by the mafia-like Largo family--grows and installs new organs on a massive scale. The business, though, necessitates the employment of repo men to reclaim the organs from clients who miss their payments. Repo man and single father Nathan Wallace (Anthony Head, BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER) keeps his job a secret from his terminally ill daughter, Shilo (Alexa Vega), doing it only to pay for her costly medication. Nathan also has a secret history with GeneCo patriarch Rotti Largo (Paul Sorvino)---and their connection is about to become public knowledge on the night of a concert from popular singer--and GeneCo client--Blind Mag ...

Friday Night Lights movie DVD
$26.59 With the release of Robert Altman's M*A*S*H in 1970, a new form of comedy was born, one that would help to forever change the face of cinema. Altman's audacious film reflected the American counterculture's growing distrust of religion and government in the late 1960s and early 1970s, resulting in one of the biggest box office smashes of its time. Introducing the techniques he would employ throughout his storied career--overlapping dialogue, a constantly moving camera with a heavy amount of zooming, and a bold combination of frank subject matter with cynical ...
