| | Mariah Carey Ballads CD Mariah Carey Discography of CDs
Few need to be reminded of Mariah Carey's prodigious vocal talents, or her unimpeachable string of chart-topping singles, but this succinctly titled Columbia Legacy retrospective neatly avoids potential redundancy by focusing on Carey's slow-burning ballads, which served as showcases for her legendary five octave vocal range. Though all of these selections are heavy on vocal pyrotechnics, Carey never lets her virtuosity overwhelm the solidly original songwriting in evidence on numbers like "Dreamlover" and "Vision of Love." As Carey's career progressed, she began to lean more towards the dance/R&B market, so though BALLADS includes selections from all of her albums for Columbia, it's track list is weighted towards her earlier releases like MUSIC BOX and MARIAH CAREY.

Ballads
$7.45 All songs co-written by Mariah Carey except "Open Arms" (S. Perry/J. Cain). Samples included "Genius Of Love" (as performed by Tom Tom Club).
DAYDREAM was nominated for 1996 Grammy Awards for Album Of The Year and Best Pop Album. "One Sweet Day" was nominated for Record Of The Year and Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals; "Fantasy" was nominated for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance; and "Always Be My Baby" was nominated for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance.
On DAYDREAM, Mariah Carey's singing expands the panorama of its emotional release--her voice, having been a strictly powerful pure instrument, now taking on the thespian strategies of great vocalists. She has added subtle understatement to her bag of tricks. On the hit single "Fantasy," a groovin' piece of soulful pop based on a sample of the Tom Tom Club's "Genius Of Love," the chorus layers generous helpings of her voice. But rather than featuring the high-pitched ...
| | Mariah Carey Butterfly CD (1997)
Ballads
$7.59 "Butterfly" was nominated for a 1998 Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. "Honey" was nominated for 1998 Grammy Awards for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance and Best R&B Song.
A mature and contemplative Mariah Carey emerges as if from a chrysalis on her seventh album, displaying her now-familiar otherworldly vocal abilities tempered by a new restraint, as well as an infallible ear for irresistible rhythm-based, hook-laden music. BUTTERFLY's uptempo songs, including "Honey" and "Fly Away (Butterfly Reprise)," are flawlessly produced and catchy, and the title track soars with the spirit of independence and freedom.

| | Chante Moore Love Supreme CD (1995)
Ballads
$6.49 On A LOVE SUPREME, Chante Moore's supple, sensuous vocals snake around jazzy, R&B mid-tempo grooves, in search of the perfect love. From the sultry, spoken opening where she unmistakably states her modern-day intentions to the old phono recording scratches of "Old School Love," Chante searches, preys, teases, romances, and snares.
Chante is one of the leading new R&B divas. Her voice has a remarkable range, and an emotive quality rare in many new artists. She is reminiscient of Diana Ross, but a full-throttle Ross. Her jazz inclinations and rich, lower register also remind the listener of Anita ...

| | 23 Skidoo Just Like Everybody CDs (1987) (Import) Reissue; United Kingdom
Ballads
$15.59 A compilation issued in the U.K. on Bleeding Chin in 1987, Just Like Everybody contains highlights from Seven Songs, The Culling Is Coming, Urban Gamelan, and some of 23 Skidoo's assorted singles released from 1982-1986. One-third of its tracks come from the thoroughly excellent Seven Songs, with significantly less taken from the other longer form releases. It should be noted that the version of "Coup" here is an exclusive mix (not listed as such) that is inferior to the original, slightly slower in tempo with extra trumpet improvisation, added shuffling percussion, and elements of "F.U.G.I." When LTM issued a two-disc version of Just Like Everybody in 2008, the label drastically reconfigured the original's makeup, extending the set to 16 tracks with the second disc a straight reissue of Just Like Everybody, Part 2 (itself a disc made of studio material that had, until 2002, remained unreleased). ~ Andy Kellman
This release, part of LTM's 2008 series ...
| | Lionel Richie Just Go CD (2009)
Ballads
$11.59 Lionel Richie has been an R&B hitmaker since his days with the Commodores in the 1970s, but he experienced a fallow period starting in the late '90s, during which his records make relatively little chart impact. That all changed with the 2006 album COMING HOME, Richie's biggest success since his '80s peak. So expectations were high for the follow-up, and JUST GO lives up to those expectations, simply by presenting a perfect distillation of what Richie ...
