| | Bossa N' Stones V.1 & 2 CD (2006) Limited Edition
Diaspora For Africa Vol. 1 CD music
$12.95 This double-disc set issued by Music Brokers is partially what it says it is: bossa nova versions of Rolling Stones tunes. Even as a novelty this is stretching it -- why would any real bossa artist want to cover the Rolling Stones? In any case, a slew of minor bossa acts did sign up, and came up with some interesting versions of Stones cuts. Examples of these are Karen Souza's "Wild Horses," the Amazonics' "Let's Spend the Night Together," Anakelly's "Under My Thumb," and Urban Love's "Beast of Burden." There's also a ton of electronica here, and some of it is big booty bass like the Favela remix of "The Harlem Shuffle" by Marvin or Dual Sessions' dubby remix of "Ruby Tuesday." Unfortunately, most of the cuts here are like these last two, and have little to nothing to do with bossa. It's a come on. Ultimately, this set is for novelty freaks only. ~ Thom Jurek
Australian two CD set compiles both volumes of this popular series. Volume One is the compilation that started the Bossa Nova covers boom! Bossa N' Stones is an Electronic-tinged Bossa Nova treatment of Rolling Stones classics. They have assembled musicians and producers of different latitudes, who accepted the challenge of mixing the music of the legendary Rolling Stones, with the spirit of the Bossa Nova and contemporary electronics. Selections include classics such as 'Start Me Up', 'Satisfaction', 'Let's Spend ...
| | Mighty Diamonds Right Time CD (1976)
Diaspora For Africa Vol. 1 music CDs
$9.09 Few reggae bands evoked their audience's suffering as viscerally as the Mighty Diamonds, not least because of lead vocalist Donald "Tabby" Shaw. Although overshadowed by stars like Bunny Wailer, Shaw's aching lilt remains a compelling signature of the roots-oriented '70s era. His graceful yet forceful presence on songs like "I Need a Roof" -- which laments lack of housing -- is exactly what the music needs. A strong moralistic undertone runs throughout the album. "Right Time" warns of an impending breakdown in social order, and "Why Me Black Brother Why" decries the rampant lawlessness afflicting the island nation. "Them Never Love Poor Marcus" scornfully denounces the people who betrayed the black nationalist leader (Marcus Garvey) for "rice and peas." "Gnashing of Teeth" takes up the Biblical imperative of Judgment Day, in which "only good works shall see you through." Some strategic departures help to leaven the band's approach, most notably the love song "Shame and Pride." Lloyd Ferguson steps out of his backup vocalist role on "Go Seek Your Rights," which reminds people ...

| | Sara Tavares Xinti CD (2009)
Diaspora For Africa Vol. 1 album
$13.29 For her new outing, Sara Tavares fills things out a bit musically, but never overloads her songs, keeping the feel lush rather than crowded. The overall effect is of a CD where the melodies and voice float, by the very careful application of light touches everywhere. Although rooted in her native Cape Verde and strongly influenced by her adopted home of Portugal, there's a strong pop edge to her songs, with softly memorable melodies that sway rather than pound. She's a good guitarist as well as an entrancing vocalist, and she proves it ...
