Good Neighbor
$6.75 A surprise best-seller when it was first released, this mostly improvised pairing of singer/keyboardist/producer Al Kooper with two major guitar heroes of the day sounds fascinating all these years later precisely because of the distance of time--nobody makes records like this any more. The material runs the gamut from folk pop (covers of Donovan and Dylan), to blues ("Albert's Shuffle," "You Don't Love Me"), to heady jams ("His Holy Modal Majesty"), to big-band jazz ("Harvey's Tune").
All the tunes make effective templates for the kind off-the-cuff music-making that in less capable hands might have resulted in simple noodling. In fact, although Bloomfield and Stills don't play together on any of the cuts (Bloomfield played on one side of the original LP, Stills on the other), all three principals get off lots of good licks and producer Kooper has some interesting tricks up his sleeve, as in the over-the-top phasing he lavishes on "You Don't Love Me." The only real disappointment here is that Stills, a far better singer than Kooper, never opens his mouth.

Good Neighbor
$14.65 This superbly recorded double disc (the original engineer was Eddie Kramer, best-known for his work with Hendrix) captured over a weekend worth of dates in February 1970 at the venerable New York City venue catches the Brit boogie quartet at the peak of their powers. These shows were sandwiched between their triumphant Woodstock set and the release of Cricklewood Green, generally considered the band's best work. They find the group primed through years of roadwork, as well as obviously excited to be playing in front of an appreciative N.Y.C. crowd. Kicking off with one of Bill Graham's patented individual-member intros, the group winds their way through the ominous riff of "Love Like a Man." Mixing extended and rocking versions of blues standards -- like Sonny Boy Williamson classics "Help Me" and "Good Morning Little ...

$10.15 I could tell you all about where I was born and raised, and the rest of my life story, but I'd much rather just share the meaningful parts with you. I will tell you I've sung at Canterbury Cathedral in England and Notre Dame Cathedral in France. I also met Pope John Paul II at the Vatican in Rome. I live in southern Illinois with one very supportive husband who believes in me and two children who, although they don't always operate under the same mission statement as the rest of the household, are my very heartbeats. Singing is my security, my ...

| | Jim Kweskin Maria Muldaur & Her Garden Of Joy: Good Time Music For Hard Times CD (2009) (Import) Digipak; Canada
Good Neighbor
$15.15 Maria Muldaur's ripe, sexy vocals have been delighting audiences ever since she started singing in Greenwich Village coffeehouses. As you may or may not know, her first recordings were made for Elektra Records in 1964 as part of the Even Dozen Jug Band, a group that included future icons John Sebastian (Lovin' Spoonful) and progressive bluegrass pioneer David Grisman, creator of Dawg Music. Muldaur revisits the music of her youth here with the help of Sebastian, Grisman, Dan Hicks, and a youthful jug band she recently discovered, the Crow Quill Night Owls, featuring Kit Stovepipe on National guitar, jug, and washboard. "Garden of Joy," a classic Muldaur cut with Jim Kweskin, was the title tune of one of his early solo albums. It features a terrific fiddle solo by Suzy Thompson, and Muldaur's vocals still hit all the high notes, although her low end is now richer and more soulful than in her youth. "I Ain't Gonna Marry," another ragtime slow blues from Kweskin's "Garden of Joy," features Muldaur's exuberant singing and high-spirited work from the ensemble. Hicks contributes two new compositions, still heavily swinging and ironic: "The Diplomat" is a jaundiced look at modern life full of his skewed humor and set to a ragtime rhythm with Grisman's ...
