(13 Customer Reviews)
Oakland-born R&B songstress Keyshia Cole has been crafting top-shelf R&B that straddles the stylistic divide between the stridently modern, club-oriented R&B of contemporaries like Ne-Yo and the more backward-looking, classicist soul of Mary J. Blige. A DIFFERENT ME unquestionably favors the latter style. Even on tracks like "Oh-Oh, Yeah-Yea," which features dance-floor ready production from the Outsyderz and a guest appearance from Nas, Cole adopts a self-consciously dramatic, melismatic style of delivery that evokes the vocal virtuosity of divas like Blige and Whitney Houston. This is not to say that A DIFFERENT ME is a wholly conservative affair however. Though much of the album features a more lyrically introspective and musically ambitious side of Cole's artistic personality, tracks like the propulsive, Polow Da Don-produced "Make Me Over" ought to satisfy fans looking for more energetic material.
Audio Remasterer: Bernie Grundman.Rolling Stone (p.76) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "'Make Me Over' is a shimmying, string-pierce vamp...and 'No Other' pumps Spanish guitar into a Mary J.-style monogamy ode." Spin (p.78) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "Accentuating joy over pain to reflect her ascent from troubled beginnings, this is the rare upbeat R&B disc that still feels real." Entertainment Weekly (p.63) - "On A DIFFERENT ME, this Oakland-born belter turns her focus from heartbreak to happiness." Billboard (p.39) - "[O]n the noteworthy ballads 'You Complete Me' and 'Brand New,' Cole exhibits a growing confidence and command of her vocal talent." XXL (Magazine) (p.110) - "Opposites attract on the acoustic gem 'This Is Us'....Promising an exclusive love, Keyshia lyrically seduces her man on 'Brand New'..." Good Job Honestly at first upon my first listen to KC new album I wasn't feeling it so much but something told me to listen again...and that's when I changed my mind. Though not as good as her last or first cd's this is a good cd. I am a big Keyshia Cole fan. Good Job. It is different just like she'd said it would be. it does spotlight the "Sexier Keyshia" Even her style on this cd is different(i.e, the inside photos) sort of like a 40's or "pinup" girl style. Once agin I was at first skeptical about this new cd but after a second listen I felt better and bought it. Good job. Submitted by LHayes0525 (Rochester, New York) Was This Review Helpful? VERY NICE---IT IS DIFFERENT I bought the cd last week and it is a great cd.
It is a totally different cd from her other cds and it definitely show a different side of her. As one other person indicated, if you don't like it the first time, go back and listen to it again. People don't like change and is probably used to and is looking for the "old" Keyshia who sang sad songs about her hurt and pain. She is new & improved Keyshia. She is happy and her songs reflect that feeling. She is more secure within herself and is feeling her sexy side.
In addition, when I play her cd, I hear some crossover music that if played, can take her to a entirely different level.
I'm proud of Ms. Keyshia and her growth. She deserves the best as she has overcame many obstacles.
Congratulations on a successful 3rd CD!!!! Submitted by Diva365 (Chicago, IL) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
A Decent 3rd Album I honestly wasn't expecting too much from this album (why buy it? I hear you say). 3rd Albums are usually either a hit or a miss and I think this is a pretty decent release with 2,3 weak tracks at most. There's no standout slow tunes like "Love" or "I remember" but it still has enough to keep you interested. I would recommend it! $12.05 Though his singing career has largely taken a back seat to his hugely successful run at the box office (starring in Oscar-winning roles such as 2004's RAY), Jamie Foxx has had his feet planted in both artistic camps since his seldom-heard 1994 debut, PEEP THIS. Continuing his breakout 2005 album UNPREDICTABLE's seductive blend of romantic R&B-balladry and smooth bedroom jams, INTUITION finds Foxx upping the tempos and electronic treatments, with the ...
| | Spartacus Jones Many Ponies CD (2008)
Different Me
$18.99 My new CD is called Many Ponies. I hope you'll enjoy it.The inspiration for the title song, and so, in a way for the whole album, was a painting of the same name by a wonderful artist, Cecilia Henle. The style is primitive, in the best sense of that word, and looks quite American Indian to me, and other-worldly, as well.It reminded me a lot of the Horse Nation Dance described in Black Elk Speaks. When the horse (t'shunka wakan) came to the Plains Indians, especially the Lakotas, it created a revolutionary change in their culture and ushered in a whole new way of doing things. Since that time, the horse has been symbolic of something new, something radically different, or revolutionary change.Horses brought a revolutionary change to my way of thinking, acting and being, too.But for the New to be born, the Old has to die.To become the person you will be, you have to let go of the person you've been. It's that simple. But it ain't easy.I know.See. Horses saved my life.I’d be a much different man if not for them, and I’m not sure you’d like him.I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t like him, myself.Horses taught me things that changed me.Taught me by the nature of their being. Made me a better man and a better person. If you know and love horses, too, if you’ve been touched by them, been inspired by their courage and nobility, if you’ve delighted in their company, felt a deep peace and “at-home-ness” in their presence, then you know exactly what I’m talking about. If not, for now, just take my word for it.Because the thing is, a whole lot of what you learn from horses is applicable to any relationship with anyone, anytime, anyplace. Like the importance of honesty. And trust. And respect. And loyalty. And about being strong enough to be gentle --- and gentle enough to be strong. You might not find these qualities in many two-leggeds. But they are common characteristics in horses. There's a variety of styles in this collection. There’s something country, something ...
| | Diana Starr Living For Your Love CD (2008)
Different Me
$16.45 When it comes to great music, it doesn’t get any better than this. Diana Starr, has certainly proven herself as an accomplished singer, songwriter, arranger, producer and accompanist recording from her own studio, “Starr Tracks”. This CD is a must on any road trip. For those who haven’t heard her perform live, soul is deep in the heart of this girl from the east side of the river. Living 5 minutes from the St. Louis Arch on the Illinois side of the river, she is proud to be from the same stomping grounds as Tina Turner, Chuck Berry and now Gretchen Wilson. Coming from a musical family has further inspired her in taking her music to another level. As a writer, it was in 1981 when Diana was first acknowledged as a songwriter when she became Quarterfinalist in the Eighth Annual American Songwriting Competition with “Mr. Moonlight”, and the following year won Honorable Mention with “You’ve Gone Too Far” proving her writing skills at such an early age. After recording her “Paradise” CD, she was encouraged to enter the “Blueberry Hill” Songwriting competition in St. Louis, Missouri where all but one of her 13 songs from the CD placed with “Just A Heartbeat Away” naming her 1st place winner in the pop category. Of the other 12 songs, each one placed in the top 5 and/or top ten. ...
