Guillermo del Toro (HELLBOY) and Christopher McQuarrie (THE USUAL SUSPECTS) team up to write the script for this adaptation of the late 1960s British TV series. In THE CHAMPIONS, a group of government agents survive a plane crash, only to have their real adventures begin after their rescue. A strange people blesses them with amazing powers, turning this tale from a espionage film into a sci-fi/spy hybrid. $10.29 BRAZIL is Terry Gilliam's masterpiece. Cowritten by Gilliam, playwright Tom Stoppard, and Charles McKeown, the cult-favorite film is set in a futuristic society laden with red tape and bureaucracy. When a bug (literally) gets in the system, an innocent man is killed, leading mild-mannered Sam Lowry (an excellent Jonathan Pryce) to reexamine what he wants out of life. He decides to fight the totalitarian system in his search for freedom--and the woman he loves. The terrific, offbeat cast features Robert De Niro as a renegade heating engineer; Katherine Helmond as Sam's ever-younger mother; Michael Palin as a government-sanctioned torturer with a distaste for upsetting the status quo; Bob Hoskins as a vengeful Central Services employee; Jim Broadbent as a wacko plastic surgeon; the wonderful Ian Holm as Sam's nerve-ridden, pitiful boss, afraid of his own signature; and Kim Greist as the rebel Sam falls for.

$10.29 Beginning with a documentary style that immediately hooks the viewer, THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL, based on the Harry Bates short story "Farewell to the Master," becomes as much a human interest story as it does a sci-fi B-movie classic. The film soberly depicts the arrival of an alien dignitary, Klaatu (Michael Rennie), who has come to earth with his deadly robot, Gort (Lock Martin), to deliver the message that earthlings must stop warring among themselves--or else. After being shot at by ignorant, panicky military guards, Klaatu is brought to a Washington, D.C., hospital, where he begs a sympathetic but frank Major White (Robert Osterloh) to gather all the world's leaders so he can tell them more specifically what he has come 250 million miles to warn them about. Losing patience, Klaatu slips into the human world, adapting a false identity and living at a boarding house where he meets a smart woman with a conscience, Helen Benson (Patricia Neal), and her inquisitive son, Bobby (Billy Gray). Both mother and son soon find themselves embroiled in the complex mystery of Klaatu, his message, and the government's witch hunt for the alien. Made during the cold war--when Americans were obsessed ...

$22.09 METROPOLIS, a visionary and elaborate spectacle by director Fritz Lang is an epic projection of a futuristic city divided into a working and an elite class. Its exhilarating climax brings the city to its knees, as the classes clash against each other.
In the 21st century, a de-humanized proletariat labors non-stop in a miserable subterranean city beneath a luxurious city of mile-high skyscrapers, flying automobiles, palatial architectural idylls, tubes and tunnels. With stunningly inventive special effects, Lang's allegorical narrative and architectural vision creates a highly stylized vision of a not-so-unlikely future (especially for 1926 when the film was made). As the elite frolic above the clouds, thousands of miserable workers toil night and day inside the belly of the gigantic machine that runs the entire city. Metropolis is controlled by a sinister authoritarian whose son, Freder, rejects his father's callous philosophy and attitude towards laborers. Meek though they are, the workers are encouraged by Maria, a wistful young woman who wills her comrades to embrace patience and silent strength. Upon discovering her influence upon the workers, a mad scientist kidnaps Maria and creates a robot in her image that will incite the workers to revolt. ...

$15.09 FIRED UP (or F.U. for short) is built on the infallible comedic concept of two randy high-school football stars (Nicholas D'Agosto of HEROES and Eric Christian Olsen of LICENSE TO WED) who lie their way into a cheerleader summer camp (instead of the football camp where they belong). The movie's aims are obvious: push for maximum sleaze, raunch, and over-the-top hilarity with the assurance that the boys will learn some valuable lessons, fall in love for real, and even get in some good cheers. It's AMERICAN PIE meets BRING IT ON, and there's nothing wrong with that if the choreography is right--and it is.
The cast is surprisingly good as well, with Sarah Roemer (DISTURBIA) and Molly Sims (THE BENCHWARMERS) lending charm and good sportsmanship as the "lucky" girls who eventually reach the boys where it counts (in the heart). Philip Baker Hall (HARD EIGHT) lends his welcome, craggy face as the foul-mouthed football coach, and instructing the cheerleaders with a special sort of zeal is A MIGHTY WIND's John Michael ...
