Russian Spring
$9.55 Of the "big four" original thrash bands (the other three being Metallica, Anthrax, and Megadeth), Slayer was the least compromising and most consistent. As such, 2009's WORLD PAINTED BLOOD recalled more than the title of Slayer's 1986 masterpiece REIGN IN BLOOD; it shared the earlier album's ferocious aggression and trademark speed metal-meets-hardcore sound. Throughout, the sound is lean and mean, with bassist/vocalist Tom Araya's vocals mixed relatively dry and upfront, giving the album a bracing, fist-to-the-face force. Jackhammer tracks such as "Hate Worldwide" and "Psychopathy Red" are short, no muss-no fuss blasts of double kick drum, minor key-riffing fury, with an unrelenting intensity that requires little in the way of sonic or textural variation. The title track, on the other hand, is a somewhat slower dose of classic chugga-chugga head-banging which showcases Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman's shrieking, emotive guitar work. Remaining true to Slayer's defiantly old school sound, WORLD PAINTED BLOOD carried the torch for pure thrash.

| | Melanie Fiona Bridge CD (2009)
Russian Spring
$8.78 Melanie Fiona's debut single, "Give It to Me Right," was a perfect 2009 pop-R&B recording. The single coupled a timeless classic (the Zombies' "Time of the Season") with roof-raising vocals and infectious pop hooks that stuck like peanut butter. Fiona's single was perfect, albeit a touch formulaic. Because of this, it's no surprise that a large chunk of her debut album, THE BRIDGE, is much of the same. Like any good 2009 pop-soul recording, the album offers influences from decades of soul music. Fiona, a Kanye West protégé, collaborates with about as many styles of music as she has producers and writers, who include most prominently Canadian R&B singer-songwriter Andrea Martin, Rob Fusari, Peter Wade Keusch, Sidh Solanki, Vada Nobles, Bill Blast, Future Cut, Stereotypes, Dan Strong, JK, Jay Fenix, and Affiliate. This mash-up of masterminds is a good thing; it offers the listener generous portions of put-together pop songs which color outside the lines in terms of genre. THE BRIDGE is the perfect launching pad for a solid career where she can further explore her possibilities as an artist, seeing as she appeals to the masses as well as the critics.
Melanie Fiona toured with Kanye West on his 2008 European tour .Kanye has since called her the "next up & coming talent to watch”..Her sound is genre-crossing blending pop, R&B & reggae.
| | Van Der Graaf Generator: Live At The Paradiso DVD (2009)
Russian Spring
$14.02 On-again, off-again prog-rock band Van Der Graaf Generator proves its music has staying power with this 2007 show in Amsterdam. Peter Hammill, Hugh Banton, and Guy Evans join forces for this performance featuring classic hits like "Lemmings," "Man-Erg," and "The Sleepwalkers."
NTSC/Region 0. DVD containing a live performance from the Art Rockers, filmed in April 2007. The Paradiso In Amsterdam has been the scene of several epic shows in VdGG's past and this one's a gem of an addition to the collection. This was the band's first tour as a trio and by this show, they were well into their stride, having played nine previous shows. There's a mixture of old, new and rediscovered material here. The emphasis, though, is on looking forward rather than backward. 11 tracks plus an interview with band leader Peter Hammill. Voiceprint. 2009
| | Andrea Bocelli My Christmas CD (2009)
Russian Spring
$14.54 Andrea Bocelli's 2009 My Christmas album finds the Italian tenor performing various classic holiday-themed songs that touch on a mix of classical, opera, and pop. Included are such well-known holiday songs as "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town," "O Tannenbaum," and "Silent Night." The versatile Bocelli also delves into such iconic Christmas hits as "Blue Christmas" and "The Christmas Song" (featuring a duet with Natalie Cole). Of course, the opera and classic songs are Bocelli's bread and butter, and here listeners get such lavishly produced cuts as "Adeste Fidelis," "Cantique del Noel," and "Caro Gesu Bambino." My Christmas is not only a warm and inviting holiday album, but also a superb classical crossover entry worthy of Bocelli's discography. ~ Matt Collar
| | Steve Morse Out Standing In Their Field CD (2009)
Russian Spring
$11.18 Although Steve Vai and Joe Satriani get the lion's share of the credit for popularizing "instrumental guitar-driven rock" for metalheads in the late '80s, another gentleman was merrily shredding on the six-string around this same era (and issuing all-instrumental recordings, as well) -- Steve Morse. And despite a full-time gig as Ritchie Blackmore's replacement in Deep Purple since 1994, Morse has managed to find the time along the way to reunite with his trusty rhythm section of bassist Dave LaRue and drummer Van Romaine, and issue albums credited solely to the Steve Morse Band. Case in point, the trio's 2009 offering, Out Standing in Their Field. Times and tastes may change in the rock world on a seemingly moment to moment basis, but you always know what's in store with a new Morse Band release -- tunes that include unmistakable Zeppelin-esque grooves ("Name Dropping"), mellow detours ("Here and Now and Then"), and of course, chicken-pickin' country ditties ("John Deere Letter"). As far as technique goes, Morse can shred and pluck with the most dexterous of six-string slingers -- further proven with the arrival of Out Standing in Their Field. ~ Greg Prato
Personnel: Steve Morse (guitar); Van Romaine (drums).

| | Tom Brantley Boneyard CD (2009)
Russian Spring
$13.19 With his debut recording as a leader, trombonist and jazz educator Tom Brantley offers a versatile release, including both established and new compositions and live and studio performances, as well as a variety of different bands. The opening track, "Exemption," is a top-drawer feature for multiple trombones, with Brantley and composer Jerald Shynett as the trombone soloists, accompanied by the trombone section on loan from Chuck Owen & the Jazz Surge in a superb post-bop chart. Brantley has the chops to pull off a marvelous duet of "Stardust" with guitarist LaRue Nickelson. Tenor saxophonist/composer Jack Wilkins (not to be confused with the veteran jazz guitarist) penned the lively "Boneyard," which melds Afro-Cuban and New Orleans funk. From a 2008 concert come several small-group tracks, including a funky quartet setting of "In a Mellotone" with organ, guitar, and drums, plus a subtle adaptation of French composer Camille Saint-Saëns' Adagio. From the same show, trombonist Keith Oshiro is added with piano and bass (in place of the organ) for a breezy arrangement of Randy Weston's popular "Hi-Fly," along with a sauntering New Orleans second-line scoring of Charlie Parker's normally brisk "Confirmation." Highly recommended. ~ Ken Dryden
