Recorded in Studio A, The Record Plant, New York, New York. Includes liner notes by Peter Stampfel and Nik Venet.
An unsung part of the '60s Greenwich Village folk scene, Dalton palled around with the likes of Fred Neil and Bob Dylan, but never achieved their (or any) level of success despite an equal amount of talent. An interpreter rather than a songwriter, Dalton was sort of the folkie Billie Holiday. Her folk-blues was powered by a melancholy voice that sounded decades older than Dalton's actual age. On tunes by Neil, Tim Hardin and others, she pours out all the pain of her emotionally turbulent life (another Holiday parallel) over lightly swinging, largely acoustic accompaniment (though Lothar & the Hand People guitarist Kim King injects a bit of electricity). The sound of a soul on the inevitable road to ruin, IT'S SO HARD TO TELL is as impossible to forget as it is to ignore.
Reissue producers: Thomas Molesky, Nicholas Hill.
Personnel: Karen Dalton (vocals, 12-string guitar, banjo); Dan Hankin (acoustic guitar); Kim King (electric guitar); Harvey Brooks (bass); Gary Chester (percussion).
Producer: Nikolas Venet.
Q (7/99, p.134) - 4 stars (out of 5) - "...a deeper-throated version of Billie Holiday, with the same propensity to cracking and tear....These 10 covers...create an intimate, candlelit mood that's simultaneously unbearably sad and life-affirming..." Melody Maker (6/5/99, p.36) - 4 stars (out of 5) - "...with her 12-string and heart-wrenching sax-vox....A lost Sixties diamond." Mojo (Publisher) (p.72) - "[With] a lonesome uncompromising bleakness that makes difficult listening -- but a unique experience....[The album] haunts us still." NME (Magazine) (5/29/99, p.36) - 8 out of 10 - "...Dalton's voice operates an emotional scorched-earth policy....It's in her languid phrasing, the strain of desolation combined with bleak, self-mocking wit, in the distillation of loneliness and resentment..."
