Bang Bang Eche formed the day after three of the kids got arrested for LARPing in public. Centered on a mutual love for dinosaurs and cartoons, the trio began practicing across the road from a homeless shelter in big, bad Christchurch, New Zealand. After playing ten shows to sold-out crowds at local venue "Party Central," Charlie, Josh and James recruited T'Nealle and Zach as security. T'Nealle was chosen due to her notoriety in underground fighting circles and Zach was picked because he was the only person with a driver's license.Over the next few months Bang Bang Eche began fusing their bouncers into their performances and the band grew to a five piece, with T'Nealle taking up the bass guitar and Zach becoming lead sermonizer. On T'Nealle's insistence that the bang get "more brutal," the band began to write the material that became their self-titled EP. Their EP was recorded over a week in Christchurch. The first track, “4 To The Floor,” reached number one on New Zealand’s college radio network almost immediately. This was the band's second number one single, with “Nikee” reaching the spot in September 2007. “Time Mismanagement” eventually cracked the top 5. "We think our EP is best described as a five-track foray into the “Land Before Time” but in this movie the dinosaurs play synths and sixteenth beats, and the T-Rexes are all dancing along and shit,” collectively spoke Bang Bang Eche.“I can't remember if there are T-Rexes in the “Land Before Time,” but I don't see why there shouldn't be—they are the baddie bad carnivores who get up the in the grill of the herbivores who are the protagonists in the story… or something along the lines of that.Perhaps it is like Otis and Milo and they are prehistoric cats and dogs who fall in love but get split up due to the war and the Nazi party take them away from each other because, in one song, there is the word 'insipid' and the leader of the party scene decided that wasn't the kind of image that we wanted to be portraying but then it got put on the album because we have communication issues." $12.05 Though the sleeve notes of DJ Shadow's exhilarating long-playing debut speak of his devotion to "vinyl culture" and "sample-based music" (a guide of which is contained within), it's all just double-speak for hip-hop. Undoubtedly, this is the musical culture that lit up the life of young Cali-boy Josh Davis, inspiring him to construct these vocal-less, found-sound collages. Not the hip-hop that a dime-a-dozen MCs have turned into a cartoonish, excess-filled formula, but the hip-hop of such sonic anarchist producers as Afrika Bambaataa and The Bomb Squad. To put it mildly, DJ Shadow sides with the dope beats, not the bland blah-blah-blah.

Bang Bang Eche music CDs
$15.55 For its second release, this fascinating ensemble chose to record two extended suites by band members Bruno Tommaso and Giorgio Gaslini. Tommaso's "Il Maestro Muratore" (The Master Mason), inspired by the Sardinian sculptor Constantino Nivola, begins superbly with a spirited romp based on a Sardinian folk dance and featuring high-wire soloing by trumpeter (and founder) Pino Minafra and Carlo Actis Dato on bass clarinet. The remainder of the piece meanders a bit, genre-hopping in postmodern fashion but doing so with perhaps less grace than one would wish. The suite ends with a reprise of the opening theme, and one only wishes the same verve and vigor could have been sustained throughout the composition. Gaslini's title piece is similarly wide ranging, though with a early 20th century European cosmopolitan feel befitting several of its dedicatees from art, music, and film. While the thematic material might have echoes of parlor music and cabarets, the solos are firmly in the avant-garde tradition, forming a counterpoint that is initially beguiling but grows a bit thin with repetition. Still, there are jewels within, such as the lovely miniature tribute, "Satie Satin," ...

RADIO CITY recorded at Ardent Studios, Memphis, Tennessee in the Fall of 1973. Originally released on Ardent in 1974.
Big Star can be ranked alongside the Velvet Underground and the Sex Pistols as one of the major inspirations for the indie and alternative rock movements. The group's first two albums, collected here on one disc, have influenced everyone from R.E.M. to Teenage Fanclub to the Replacements to Nirvana. Their debut, #1 RECORD, combined the melodiousness and perfectly arranged feel of the mid-period Beatles with the raw rock kick of the early Kinks and the jangly country-rock beauty of the ...
