It's no exaggeration to say that Liverpool's SSS (which stands for "Short Sharp Shock") effectively put the beat-down into Merseybeat with their eponymous 2007 debut album and its furious revival of '80s-style crossover hardcore/thrash. Here were four Limeys, comfortably picking up the torch first lit by their transatlantic heroes -- Agnostic Front, Cro-Mags, etc. -- some 20 years earlier, and dousing them in gallons of lighter fluid embodied by their new millennium-level controlled speed and technical precision -- now that's a fire! So for their all-important follow-up, 2008's The Dividing Line, SSS made sure to go one better, by sticking with their no-holds-barred philosophy, even as they somehow jammed no less than 20 surprisingly distinctive "Short Sharp Shocks" (most averaging 90 seconds in length) into 32 minutes of organized mayhem. And it works, since for all of their frequent and aesthetically defining bursts of aggression, hyper-thrash nuggets like "Toxic Bee," "Purple Reign," and even the 43-second burp "Oil and Water" (which is very AF) still boast innumerable unexpected time changes, fluid bass runs, and metallic guitar riffs and harmonies, among other ingredients. By the time SSS "indulge" themselves with a four-minute "epic," "Unrest in the Northwest," which closes the album, it's abundantly clear that they can play pretty much anything, and this makes their devotion to inflicting concentrated jabs of adrenaline all the more powerful. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia S S S Dividing Line Songs Dividing Line Review

Dividing Line album
$12.75 Crossover, as a genre, has been so removed from the public conscience since its salad days in the mid-'80s that very few modern bands are able to dip into its aesthetic without sounding like a mere nostalgia act. Liverpool, England's SSS are one such band. Short Sharp Shock, as they are known to their friends, make no apologies about their fixation on all things '80s crossover, but their eponymous debut still succeeds in bringing a contemporary freshness to the style without breaking out of character. And so, mosh-ready anthems like "Warhorse," "Damaged Goods," and "Last Man Standing" (to cite but a few) feature all of the core genre requirements you'd expect (punk's sonic straightforwardness and blunt honesty; metal's instrumental ...

$10.89 Job for a Cowboy have taken a lot of abuse from undergrounder-than-thou types for selling records to the wrong people. However, judged purely as music, without worrying about who's listening to it and why, 2009's RUINATION, like their prior album, GENESIS, is a very solid example of modern technical deathcore. Vocalist Jonny Davy has expanded his range somewhat ...

$11.15 Most bands begin with an idea, but THIS FIRES EMBRACE began with a gunshot. On December 8, 2004, Aaron Benner, lead singer of well known central Ohio band Liquid6Teen, was stage right at a Columbus concert venue called the AlRosaVilla when a crazed gunman rushed the stage and began firing. When it was all over, five people were dead including famous Pantera guitar player Dimebag Darrel Abbott. The Lord used this tragic event as a catalyst to a life altering change in Aaron. After months of soul-searching, Aaron felt the Lord's calling on his life. Aaron was compelled to use his musical talents as a ministry. He left Liquid6Teen at the pinnacle of their popularity and began praying for the Lord to send him Christian musicians that shared his calling. Just a few months later those prayers were answered in the form of Marc Leist, Josh Hall, Zack Koah, and Steve Malone. This five member team then became THIS FIRES EMBRACE.Since the forming of THIS FIRES EMBRACE in late 2005, the Lord has truly blessed their ministry. In their first 2 years of performing, they've headlined and filled nearly every venue in the central Ohio area. They've traveled the region sharing the stage with National Acts such as Pillar, Decypher Down, Shinedown, Trapt, Bobaflex, Spoken, Staple, Buckcherry, Saliva, Last Tuesday, Fireflight, Eleventyseven, Krystal Meyers, and John Rueben. THIS FIRES EMBRACE have entered several Battle of the Bands contests and walked away with first prize at each event. They entered the Band with a Mission organizations Battle for Shout-fest contest and went all the way to the final round in Nashville, Tennessee where they placed 9th in the country. Only four short months after starting to play shows, they released two singles, "On Broken Wings" and "Home Again" to national Christian radio. They released their first album, Redemption in May of 2006. In the year and a half since THIS FIRES EMBRACE added songs to their MySpace account, they've had an astonishing 400,000 plays. Atlantic, Koch, and TVT Records representatives raved over their show at a label showcase in Columbus in late summer of 2006. In 2007 and 2008, they were asked to perform at some of the biggest festivals in the country, including Ichthus, Cornerstone, ...
