| | Uriah Heep Blood On The Stone CD (2001) (Import)
Media Motel music CDs
$23.65 Blood On Stone picks up where Travellers In Time left off, spilling liberal draughts of Firefly, Abominog, Head First, Raging Silence, Different World and the albums in between across two discs. Maybe they should have called it Blood From A Stone. Not that the post-High And Mighty Heep didn't have some high points of their own, but two discs' worth? Part of the problem stems from licensing issues: Equator, Sea of Light and Sonic Origami were apparently off limits to Castle, so the label was forced to spread the remains thin. The Best of... Part 2, which covered the same terrain over a single disc, had the luxury of leaving tracks like "When The War Is Over" and "Firefly" off the guest list. That disc managed to hide the cracks, which Blood On Stone exposes anew. So while ...

| | Bee Gees Odessa CDs (1969) Deluxe Edition
Media Motel album
$33.99 ODESSA is widely regarded as the Bee Gees' finest pre-SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER moment, an elaborate (the original LP had a red velveteen cover), baroque-pop masterpiece on the order of the Zombies' ODESSEY AND ORACLE or even the Beatles' SGT. PEPPER. The ambitious arrangements and elegant-but accessible songcraft of tunes like "Melody Fair," "Lamplight," and "First of May" certainly bears out this estimation. Accordingly, ODESSA has been given a deluxe treatment here, with two full discs of bonus material appended to the original album. While there are a couple of never-before-heard songs amid the bonus tracks, most of discs two and three are occupied by mono mixes and alternate versions of the album's classic tunes, offering fresh glimpses of a cult classic.
ODESSA stands as one of the great British pop albums of the '60s, right up alongside such tours de force as SGT. PEPPER, ODYSSEY AND ORACLE, and S.F. SORROW. In fact, while it's full of elegant baroque pop gems, ODESSA's range even extends beyond its aforementioned peers, delving over the course of its double-length into everything from Gospel to country. Songs like "Melody Fair" employ all the pop smarts the Gibbs earned early in their career and apply them to a much more sophisticated scope of song structure. The seven minute-plus title song is a centerpiece here, an epic account of a ship gone astray, full of changes in texture, tempo and dynamics, veering dangerously close to artsong, but (as is part of the Bee Gees' magic) always staying on the right side of infectiousness.
Reprise/Rhino went all-out for their deluxe edition treatment of the Bee Gees' 1969 Odessa album. Disc one of the three-CD set has the album (originally a double LP) in its original mono mix; disc two presents it in its original stereo mix; and disc three, most excitingly for Bee Gees fans and collectors, offers 22 previously unreleased tracks (and one promotional radio spot). It goes without saying, perhaps, that this is a pretty specialized affair even by the standards of deluxe editions, especially as Odessa is not exactly considered a core classic late-'60s rock album by mainstream audiences. It has its merits, however, and even though ownership of both the stereo and mono CDs might not be considered essential by the average Bee Gees fan, fanatics will appreciate having both of them side by side (especially as the mono mixes were made available in the U.S. for the first time here).
The real interest, of course, lies in the abundant previously unreleased material. Most of this, it should be cautioned, consists of alternate versions/mixes and demos of songs that made it onto the album -- in fact, there demos ...
| | Mike Peralta Music Of My Youth CD (2008)
Media Motel CD music
$11.49 Mike Peralta With more than 150 songs to his credit, Mike Peralta says his musical influence started with Nirvana and an old guitar his mother gave him. It wasn't as easy as he thought and on the verge of giving up trying to play guitar, a high school friend taught him to play 'power chords', a simple technique, he says, it makes you look like you're good and sound like you're good, without actually being that good. With renewed hope and ambition, Mike and Alex could be found rocking out in Mike's parents' garage after school and every spare minute, playing random songs. Mike would practice for hours everyday until he finally was able to play and sing Smells like teen spirit one of Nirvana's hits. He went on to play bass guitar, keyboard and drums and started recording his own music. He bought a TASCAM 4-track recorder (the kind that turns a cassette tape into a 4-track) and recorded song after song after song. He still thought his singing was less than amateur at best but he didn't give up. He obsessively wrote his own songs for the band to play. With his confidence soaring, Mike played in several bands in high school Which were basically just regroupings of the same 10 friends over and over again. Each time one of us would quit or rejoin, we would change the name he recalls with a grin. Some of the bands he played with in high school were, "Enemy dog", Products of Society, Tommy in Shorts and Anal combustion. Mike recalls, I was always the singer/rhythm guitarist and songwriter even though I clearly still did not know how to sing, he laughs. But the guys thought I could so I kept doing it. None of the bands that Mike joined in high school stayed together. Mike recalls, If the lead guitarist was good, the drummer wasn't and if the drummer was good, the bass guy wasn't. We just couldn't seem to find the right players to make the right sound. Mike learned very quickly that the bands he joined would come and go like the common cold. That meant that songs came and went with the owner of the song. Mike wanted to be able to play the same songs regardless of who he played with in the band. Because of that and the fact that he was the sole songwriter in most of those bands, he learned to copyright his music with the library of congress and kept writing songs on his own and then brought them into each band he joined. When the band would break up, I would take the songs with me because they were my own original work and use them for the next band and the band and the, well, you get the idea. He explained. One of Mike's first gigs was to play "Sundae night live", (the main event for the local high school's Drama performance ) with his two friends and band members Oliver and Brian. Parents and students had to buy a ticket to get in so, it ...
