The art-rock band Grits was active in the DC area from 1970 through 1978. Previous releases from Grits are "As the World Grits", and "Rare Birds", both out of print. These tracks date from the final years of the band, recorded at DC's premier studio, Track Recorders, instead of using the band's own setup. Mostly straight songs, the final cut is a longer work with three main sections. All cuts are vocal, with the band's bass player, Amy Taylor, singing on all but the title cut, sung by drummer Bob Sims. Rick Barse composed all the songs and played keyboards. He, Bob, and Tom Wright on guitar, added background vocals. Rock & Roll Madness Music Grits Rock & Roll Madness Songs | 1. | I Want You Again |

| | Rosanne Cash List CD (2009)
Rock & Roll Madness
$11.99 After the dark and chilling themes of 2006's BLACK CADILLAC, which saw Rosanne Cash dealing with the deaths of her mother, Vivian Liberto, her father, Johnny Cash, and her stepmother, June Carter Cash -- all of whom passed within a two-year span -- one might assume that her next project would move into an even deeper level of bleakness, but with THE LIST, it's immediately clear that she has instead found a more measured place to stand. It's a lovely and redemptive outing that looks back to go forward. When Cash turned 18, her father, alarmed that his daughter only knew the songs that were getting played on the radio, gave her a list of what he considered 100 essential American songs; Cash kept that list, and now she's drawn on it for this wonderfully nuanced outing that brims with a kind of redemptive timelessness. THE LIST is a renewal and a testament to life, and it belongs to her father as much as it belongs to her, a beautiful restatement of her father's passions, only ...

| | Mike Bloomfield Super Session CD (1968) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Rock & Roll Madness
$6.75 A surprise best-seller when it was first released, this mostly improvised pairing of singer/keyboardist/producer Al Kooper with two major guitar heroes of the day sounds fascinating all these years later precisely because of the distance of time--nobody makes records like this any more. The material runs the gamut from folk pop (covers of Donovan and Dylan), to blues ("Albert's Shuffle," "You Don't Love Me"), to heady jams ("His Holy Modal Majesty"), to big-band jazz ("Harvey's Tune").
All the tunes make effective templates for the kind off-the-cuff music-making that in less capable hands might have resulted in simple noodling. In fact, although Bloomfield and Stills don't play together on any of the cuts (Bloomfield played on one side of the original LP, Stills on the other), all three principals get off lots of good licks and producer Kooper has some interesting tricks up his sleeve, as in ...
| | Ray LaMontagne Trouble CD (2004)
Rock & Roll Madness
$9.69 Every once in a while a singer/songwriter comes down the pike in the grand emotive tradition of Neil Young and Van Morrison. In the early 2000s, the quietly intense folk of Iron & Wine and the rootsy-experimental stylings of Sufjan Stevens continued that lineage. Ray LaMontagne, whose impressive 2004 debut, TROUBLE, draws on alt-country, roots rock, and progressive folk in a unique, strikingly ...

Rock & Roll Madness
$10.15 My music has long been an expression of my love for both arts and the sciences. Six or seven of the songs on 2003’s Animal Diseases are legitimately about “animal diseases,” such as "hyperkeratosis," "hydrophobia," and "new castle disease." Scientific themes are more subtly woven into 2004’s Full Grown… whose word-play explores more human themes such as love, duty, and remembrance. My work as an EMT in Las Vegas, NV (a job I held for four years) inspired the song “Call 911!!,” which is written from the perspective of an ambulance driver. The types of ...
