As the title says, Live at Donington was recorded live at England's annual heavy metal festival, Castle Donington, on August 22, 1993. The performances are definitely an improvement over the disappointingly lackluster A Real Live Dead One collection (taken from the same tour), while the track listing is a near-exact duplicate of Dead One. $25.39 (2-LP set) Gatefold sleeve.
Personnel includes: Michael Jackson (vocals, percussion); Paul McCartney (vocals); Vincent Price (spoken vocals); Steve Lukather (guitar, bass); Eddie Van Halen, Dean Parks, Paul Jackson (guitar); Larry Williams (flute, saxophone); Jerry Hey (trumpet, flugelhorn); Bill Reichenbach (trombone); David Paich (piano, synthesizer); Greg Phillinganes (Fender Rhodes piano, synthesizer, programming); Steve Porcaro (synthesizer, programming); David Foster, Rod Temperton (synthesizer); Tom Bahler (Synclavier); Louis Johnson (bass); Ndugu Chancler, Jeff Porcaro (drums); Paulinho Da Costa (percussion); Brian Banks (programming); LaToya Jackson, Julia Waters, Maxine Waters, Oren Waters, Becky Lopez, Janet Jackson (background vocals). Principally recorded at Westlake Audio, Los Angeles, California. Off the Wall was a massive success, spawning four Top Ten hits (two of them number ones), but nothing could have prepared Michael Jackson for Thriller. Nobody could have prepared anybody for the success of Thriller, since the magnitude of its success was simply unimaginable -- an album that sold 40 million copies in its initial chart run, with seven of its nine tracks reaching the Top Ten (for the record, the terrific "Baby Be Mine" and the pretty good ballad "The Lady in My Life" are not like the others). This was a record that had something for everybody, building on the basic blueprint of Off the Wall by adding harder funk, hard rock, softer ballads, and smoother soul -- expanding the approach to have something for every audience. That alone would have given the album a good shot at a huge audience, but it also arrived precisely when MTV was reaching its ascendancy, and Jackson helped the network by being not just its first su

$9.49 Madonna's HARD CANDY continued the electronica-oriented, disco-centric vibe she began with CONFESSIONS ON A DANCE FLOOR, and "Give It 2 Me," the album's second single, is a case in point. Co-written and co-produced by industry heavyweight Pharrell Williams, "Give It 2 Me" pulses, surges, and sashays with all the pop smarts that her fans expect from Madonna. The GIVE IT 2 ME maxi-single contains 8 remixes of the song from artists as diverse as Paul Oakenfold, Freddie Le Grand, and Sly & Robbie (whose dancehall interpretation of the track truly takes it someplace new). The remixes highlight the song's incessant danceability, and should have any Madonna fan, especially those of HARD CANDY, gyrating with pleasure.
| | Pet Shop Boys Yes CDs (2009) Limited Edition
Miles Away
$18.59 Few synth-pop outfits can boast the longevity and staying power of the Pet Shop Boys as demonstrated on their 10th studio album, YES. With its soulfulness and simplicity, YES manages to keep the duo sounding fresh while injecting a warmth too often lost in electronic music. While the album certainly doesn't break any new ground, the Pet Shop Boys' predictability is part of their charm since they long ago perfected the formula for the perfect dance anthem. Johnny Marr, who also collaborated with Pet Shop Boys vocalist Neil Tennant in Electronic, lends his guitar talents to the release; and go-to indie string arranger Owen Pallett lends a hand as well. Coming down from the ambitious, politically charged Fundamental, Yes is the sound of the Pet Shop Boys unwinding and returning to their usual fascinations: isolation, fashion, grand arrangements, and witty synth pop anthems. Unfortunately, they're in a slump with their songwriting, and subject-wise, every song here has a companion piece on some earlier album, but that doesn't mean the party is spoiled. The delicate electro opener "Love Etc." is PSB perfection with its memorable hook and faultless construction. Brian Higgins and his Xenomania team (Saint Etienne, Girls Aloud) share songwriting and production duties on the track, and while that later credit continues for the remainder of the album, the hip crew becomes invisible as singer Tennant and synth-man Lowe take over. Employing an Abbey Road orchestra and hiring Johnny Marr for some Hollywood guitar seems a familiar Pet Shop Boys maneuver, and when Neil Tennant tops it off with some sardonic lyrics, "Beautiful People" becomes a pleasingly comfortable gift for any fan thrown by Fundamental's action committee attitude. "Did You See Me Coming" is the exhilarated infatuation of "I Wouldn't Normally Do This Sort of Thing" all over again, while "King of Rome" is the spitting image of the duo's 1987 chestnut "King's Cross." These are good things, especially for the sw
| | Depeche Mode Sounds Of The Universe CDs (2009) With DVD; Deluxe Edition
Miles Away
$20.09 Nearly 4 years since their last studio album, the groundbreaking, chart-topping legendary electronic music group Depeche Mode returns with their highly-anticipated and most eclectic and energized album in decades. Sounds of the Universe finds Martin Gore, Dave Gahan, and Andy 'Fletch' Fletcher back at the top of their game. After almost 30 years together with global sales in excess of 100 million, including #1 albums and dozens of classic singles, Depeche Mode belongs to a select league of super groups -- alongside U2, R.E.M., and Metallica -- who have survived from the early 1980s with their ideals, creative vision, and core members intact. CD/DVD special edition.
Depeche Mode: Dave Gahan, Martin L. Gore, Andy Fletcher. Personnel: Luke Smith (programming). Audio Mixer: Tony Hoffer. Audio Remasterer: Stephen Marcussen. With SOUNDS OF THE UNIVERSE, Depeche Mode's follow-up to 2005's well-received PLAYING THE ANGEL, the renowned English synth-pop act tones down the dark Wagnerian mood of the earlier effort, resulting in a more dynamic sound that occasionally evokes the lighter, though no less dramatic, DM of the 1980s. As on ANGEL, chief songwriter Martin Gore cedes three songs to vocalist Dave Gahan (and his creative team), with the spiky "Hole to Feed" standing out among the latter's contributions. Highlights by the newly sober Gore include the fierce "Wrong" and the dreamy "Peace," songs that readily take their place along side Depeche Mode classics, and prove that the group is still in fine form nearly 30 years after its inception. 2005's Playing the Angel proved to be one of Depeche Mode's strongest albums -- the combination of Ben Hillier's production, the emergence of David Gahan as a songwriter following his initial solo effort and a clutch of striking songs that openly embraced arena-level bombast following the much more subtle Exciter resulted in wide praise and a well-received tour. As a result -- especially given the return of Hillier, t

$13.89 At this point, the Ostgut label might want to consider dropping a damp squib to relieve the pressure for the next producer who releases a mix, 12," or album on the label. The offshoot of the reputable Berlin club Berghain, Ostgut has become one of the most reliable sources of lean and bracing German techno, and Ben Klock's first full-length -- after a pair of solo singles, in addition to collaborations with Marcel Dettmann that yielded a single and a double pack -- only increases the stakes for the next artist album. One is, in fact, at least the equal of Prosumer & Murat Tepeli's Serenity and Shed's Shedding the Past, the artist albums released by Ostgut in 2008. One is rooted in Klock's typically cycling rhythms, yet the sum of the tracks add up to a set that is very much album shaped, as opposed to merely album length; there are deliberate shifts in tone and mood, entailing some trenchant beats as well as a handful of simultaneously subdued and suspense-building tracks that are just as creative. Klock avoided making downtempo fluff for the sake of bluffing the full-length format; even the dubstep track, "Gold Rush," is evocative. The one track that most exemplifies the album is "Goodly Sin," where Elif Biçer's spooked vocals swarm over a smacking beat, scuffing percussive accents, and submerged bleeps. ~ Andy Kellman
| | Dan Auerbach Keep It Hid Vinyl LP (2009) Bonus CD
Miles Away
$17.49 (LP + CD) On his solo debut, Black Keys singer and guitarist Dan Auerbach takes a simple approach: "I just wanted to do the things I loved." For Auerbach, that means combining elements of bluegrass a la the Stanley Brothers, mournful country balladry, Me
KEEP IT HID is the debut solo album by Dan Auerbach, one half of the Akron, Ohio, blues-rock duo the Black Keys. The album is sonically of a piece with the Black Keys' noisy post-modern take on electric blues, but here Auerbach broadens his musical and conceptual outlook enough to make it a genuinely different proposition. Specifically, Auerbach blends sweet Memphis soul and acoustic country and bluegrass elements into these 14 songs, adding new depth to the clattering blues rock that is the Black Keys trademark. Highlights include "I Want Some More," "My Last Mistake," and the title track. Whenever the lead singer/songwriter in a two-person group steps out with a solo album, the first question that comes to mind is whether the musician needed to go out on his own, whether he could possibly be constrained by his lone partner. In the case of Dan Auerbach, the guitarist and singer for the Black Keys, it's not so much that Pat Carney holds him back as that he's such a distinctive, powerful drummer that he colors and changes Auerbach's playing; it's what band chemistry is all about. Opening his own studio, Akron Analog, gave Auerbach an excuse to cut an album without Carney, and 2009's Keep It Hid is at once completely similar and totally different than the Black Keys. All the same musical touchstones remain -- primarily classic post-WWII blues, often filtered through '60s and early-'70s classic rock -- but without Carney the attack isn't savage, focusing on feel instead of force. To a certain extent, the Black Keys followed that aesthetic on the Danger Mouse-produced 2008 LP Attack & Release, but "Keep It Hid" lacks its studied, self-conscious atmospherics, along with Carney's wallop. Auerbach compensates by letting everything on "Keep It Hid" breathe -- there's space in his songs and his production, there are ragged edges, room echo, and natural distortion, all making it feel alluringly out of time. It follows that the album boasts more quiet acoustic moments than the Black Keys' records, but the difference is just as evident in songs that are closer to Auerbach's bluesy signature: "I Want Some More" has a thick, swampy rhythm that never quite gets menacing, "Heartbroken, In Disrepair" swirls, and the dramatic build of "When I Left the Room" has an almost psychedelic undertow, "Mean Monsoon" steps cleanly and precisely in contrast to the slow-crawling murk of "Keep It Hid," while the tremendous "My Last Mistake" is the poppiest song Auerbach has ever written. There's variety here, but Keep It Hid never draws attention to Auerbach's eclecticism, especially because it moves along at a rapid clip, never staying in one place too long. It all feels organic, right down to how it feels natural for Auerbach to step outside of the Black Keys to release this album: it really is something that he couldn't have made with Carney, and its existence winds up confirming the immense talents of both musicians. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

$29.45 Humcrush: Thomas Stronen, Ståle Storlokken. Now that a new generation has again shown that the idea of Norwegian jazz has moved well past the stage of prompting immediate surprise, hearing what individual acts can do to set themselves apart in the 21st century is part of the overall pleasure. On their third album, the keyboard/drum duo Humcrush continue following their very distinct muse, with songs reaching everywhere, from the organ flights of fancy of Korla Pandit and Raymond Scott to the realms of glitch techno and dark ambient without sounding like any one specific style -- a multiplicity that works wonders. Drawing on live recordings, Rest at Worlds End similarly relies on ranges of mood as well as style -- the contemplative "Edingruv" immediately follows the frenetic opener "Stream," while "Steam" builds from near silence to a nervy rollicking pace via Thomas Stronen's drums, even as Ståle Storlokken's calmer tones maintain a serene mood. Perhaps the best moment is the perfectly lovely title track, Storlokken's work providing a captivating melodic hook, but the whole is well worth investigating, and another well deserved feather in the Rune Grammofon label's cap. ~ Ned Raggett Now that a new generation has again shown that the idea of Norwegian jazz has moved well past the stage of prompting immediate surprise, hearing what individual acts can do to set themselves apart in the 21st century is part of the overall pleasure.
