$12.59 As any quick perusal of old Top 40 rock & roll station playlists will attest, singles were where the shakin' action was, as rock & roll albums were scarce as hen's teeth back in those pre-Beatle days. But when the record companies decided to issue one, it was usually an artifact of high rockin' value and some major influence. Naysayers to the contrary, this debut album by the Northwest's first great rock & roll combo is just such an artifact. ...

| | Pablo Mayor-Folklore Urbano Corazan CD (2009)
Nasser Band album
$17.09 Check out Pablo Mayor on the cover of Latin Beat magazine, May 2009!Here's a review from inside the magazine: This is the third production of the New York City-based band Folklore Urbano, led by multi-hyphenate Pablo Mayor, and his wife, Anna Povich de Mayor (flutist and band manager). Since their debut recording "Aviso" (2003), Mayor and Folklore Urbano have been redefining modern Colombian music by fusing its traditional folkloric rhythms with elements of jazz and other musical influences, resulting in a unique sound. CorazĂłn (Heart) includes a total of ten scores, eight of which are original compositions penned by Mayor, who also arranges all the tracks. The twelve-member collective known as Folklore Urbano swings like a fine-tuned big band as it takes the roots of Colombian rhythms on a rollercoaster ride of sophisticated arrangements and liberating jazzy applications, track after track. Mayor is a devotee of crosscultural diversity and moody experimentations, who creates compelling music, full of textural complexity. Adding vocal elements to the band are SofĂa Rei Koutsovitis and Ronald Polo. Highlighting this dazzling recording are the tracks "Cada Vez", "Expresar Amor", "DĂ©jate Amar", and Pañuelitos Blancos. -Rudy Mingual, Latin Beat, May 2009 issue.More info. on Pablo Mayor: Pablo Mayor, composer, arranger, pianist, from Cali, Colombia, holds both a B.A. and an M.A. in Jazz Arranging from the University of North Texas. While Professor of Jazz at Universidad Javeriana in Bogotá, Colombia, in 1998, Mr. Mayor began his personal investigation of the native music of Colombia. Although it will be a lifelong process of discovery, Mr. Mayor has taken his knowledge of Colombian folklore and has combined it with an extensive knowledge of jazz harmonies and arranging. Since moving to NYC in 1999, Mr. Mayor’s reputation has grown from that of a brilliant pianist and writer, to that of a leader and visionary. His work with his band Folklore Urbano has produced three CD’s and taken the band to both national and international venues. Beginning in 2003, ...

Nasser Band CD music
$17.35 Those vaults of Modern Records contain an enormous amount of recordings of R&B from the 1940s and 1950s, which have spawned a lengthy series of CD reissues on Ace. This 28-track collection focuses on, as you can probably guess from the title, women blues and R&B singers from the mid-'40s to the mid-'50s. A couple of these performers did make a mark beyond the corridors of collector-dom, those being Helen Humes and, in what are probably the sides of most significant interest to aficionados, previously unreleased alternate takes of Esther Phillips' first two 78s (when she was billed as Esther Jones with the Johnny Otis Orchestra). Otherwise, it's a mixture of pretty obscure singles by pretty obscure singers, along with a good number of previously unreleased tracks, some of whose origins are so murky that they're ...
