A dazzling visual diary of legendary performances, THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT chronicles the development of the Who from angry young mod upstarts to worldwide arena rock icons. Director Jeff Stein (who was just 21 at the time) was given unlimited access to archives of the Who, occasionally butting heads with famously strong-willed guitarist/songwriter Pete Townsend over the direction of the film. It begins with the band's famed guitar-smashing, 1967 American TV debut on The Smothers Brothers show and continues through Monterey Pop, Woodstock, and on into the 1970s as the band cements its "legend" status in the rock canon with such complex works as QUADROPHENIA. Twenty-two classic Who tunes are featured, including a special version of the title track, "My Generation," "Magic Bus," "Happy Jack," and "Long Live Rock." Manic drummer Keith Moon, who provides numerous laughs in the film, died a year before the film was released.

Theatrical Release: October 1979. When the film was originally released on video, two musical segments were cut, paring it down from 106 minutes to 99 minutes. The 2003 video release restores the film. The performances of "Baba O' Reilly" and "Won't Get Fooled Again" were Keith Moon's last with the band before his death. Attempting to convince the band of his feature length movie idea, director Jeff Stein showed the band the 17-minute reel of The Who television appearances he had cobbled together. The band laughed hysterically at the footage, which was enough to convince them to go through with the project.

5 stars STRAP YOURSELF IN!!!
The Who have never been billed as a "Punk" band, but were one of the true pioneers of the punk genre. "The Kids Are Alright" exposes The Who as the virile, brutish youths they were. It's a great look into rock history and a sobering view of the effects of fame on young rockers.

4 stars You have got to see this .
The Kids Are Alright DVD was very well put together. Up close and personal with Keith, Roger, Pete and John. Along with some excellent early concert footage. The producer put together some real good choice of tunes. After reading the book that was included I understood why they could not put some of the tunes I would have choosen to be in this video . I will look forward to watching this for years . Have a great time jamming with The Who.

5 stars thanks for the restoration
I don't know why but dvds have different appearances on different TVs. On someone elses this looked like a videotape but on mine it looked great! It took a year for them to spruce this one up frame by frame (the sound also) and it made me feel I was in the theater again. They even enlarged "A Quick One" to fill the screen because it only fit a small part of the screen at the theaters which was a little annoying. The extras are pretty good to. You can hear the bass guitar only part by John Entwistle (now deceased)while he plays live the songs "Baba O' Riley" and "Won't Get Fooled Again","Won't Get Fooled Again" being the most impressive one. The bass playing is really great and stands on its own. You can hear what you've been missing since bass playing is usually buried under everything else. Elsewhere there are quizes interviews and the making of sequences but only on the "special edition". I've heard of others get into the Who after seeing this movie just like me which is why I recommend it. Any thing that makes me feel like I'm in the same theater 25 years ago on a small screen must have been restored properly. The videotape also cut some out of the "A Quick One"performance but is included here in it's entirety.

5 stars The Kids Are Better Than Alright!
A must for any Who fan or indeed anyone who is sick of seeing and hearing the manufactured pop acts that are everywhere at the moment. Sound and picture quality is second to none on Disc 1 which is the feature length 'rockumentary' and gives a great insight to the development of the band. Disc 2 has some great special features including isolated feeds of the Ox's bass on Won't Get Fooled Again and Baba O'Reilly - what a musical genius. Great to use the multiple camera angles to focus in on Moonie in full flight as well. Feed this through your Hi-Fi and make use of the 5.1 sound if you have it - if not it rocks just as hard in stereo. A top DVD worth every penny (or cent)

The most booty-kickin' spoof Metal group to come down the pike since Spinal Tap is Steel Dragon, the Mark Wahlberg-fronted hair band in the film ROCK STAR. Along with other '80s metal tracks and modern tunes, this soundtrack makes for a great listen. ROCK STAR is based on Tim "Ripper" Owens, who left his Judas Priest cover band to join the real thing. The cover band in the film is Blood Pollution, who give us the catchy, hard-rocking "Wasted Generation." ...
