Guitarist John Scofield has excelled in assorted jazz contexts, from straight-ahead jazz (Charles Mingus) to funky fusion (George Duke, Miles Davis). Throughout his career, Scofield has never stood still and his latest venture, PIETY STREET, sees him accenting the bluesy side of his musical personality. The roots of jazz, blues, and much else can be heard and felt in gospel music, and STREET consists mostly of early 20th-century gospel standards lovingly re-invented. Scofield and his compatriots--Jon Cleary on keys, ex-Meters bassist George Porter, and drummer Ricky Fataar--situate these tunes into a cleanly swinging, cooking jazz context, with some occasional New Orleans fire `n' spunk (such as on "Never Turn Back" and the original "It's A Big Army") in the mix.

Tobin Sprout has never been as versatile or dynamic a songwriter as his former Guided by Voices bandmate Robert Pollard (the two probably connected at the hip for posterity), but he has probably been the more consistent one, avoiding most of the pitfalls, potholes, cul-de-sacs, and half-baked experiments, even if he has never quite scaled the same creative peaks or achieved the often spectacular melodic highs. That consistency has resulted in a catalog of songs remarkable for its sturdy, workmanlike, even-keeled craft, and much of the best of it is present on Live at the Horseshoe Tavern, recorded at the cozy club of the title located in Toronto. In fact, the recording might be thought of as that time-honored, classic rock extravagance -- a Best of (Live) album. Sprout Comes Alive! Unlike some of the double-length behemoths of the '70s, though, Sprout's consummate skill as a writer very nearly sustains Live for its entire two-CD playing time. The selection re-airs most of the artist's finest work and is split roughly evenly between solo material and the stellar contributions he made to GBV, with a few songs from his Eyesinweasel combo and, for good measure, a tune from his one-off collaboration with Pollard, Airport 5. The set ends by introducing demos of three new songs. It's all good stuff, of course, and while none of the readings of past highlights here are revelatory, the band is in fine form throughout, and it's nice to hear these songs gathered together in the same place for the first time. It'll do the trick until a proper compilation of the best of the singer/songwriter's studio recordings finally hits the market, as it should. ~ Stanton Swihart

"Rock & Kol" is the voice (Kol) of the Shofar built on the Stone (Rock) that the builders rejected. We began as the Praise and Worship group for the messianic assembly of Mishkan Raq Kol in Wiggins, Ms. Since we found a shortage of music that used the True Names of Our Creator and His Moshiach(Messiah)and taught about the Two Houses of Israel, Rabbi Jimmy, who we think of as "The Rockin Rabbi" started writing music by the inspiration of the Ruach Ha'Kodesh (Set-Apart Spirit) that would fill this void. Rabbi Jimmy is the lead guitar player as well as the lead male vocal. His wife Tamera, light years ago, sang with a southern gospel group and now is the female lead as well as backup vocals. A few years ago Rabbi's step son Shane decided he wanted to play bass guitar. Rabbi started teaching him and he picked it up almost instantly and now plays bass for the group. He and his son Chris sing male backup also. Shane is beginning to sing some of the lead vocals. Florence is a dear friend and sister in Moshiach (Messiah) who sings backup with a true zest.We incorporate a little bit of rock, blues, hebraic and more. Rock & Kol seeks to be the voice to the returning 12 tribes of Israel, calling them home to their heritage. We're black and we're white, we're old and we're young, we're male and we're female.
