Of all the acolytes of bebop icon Charlie Parker, Phil Woods is still one of the greatest. Backed by his regular band, Woods is joined for this live-in-Chicago set by local flugelhornist Bob Lark. The mellow-ish tone of Lark and the fluid, surging tone of Woods make for an exceptional front line full of contrasts, and the band crackles and soars behind them. The tunes are a refreshing mix of standards and Lark originals.

Trombonist Grachan Moncur III, who was a member of the Jazztet in the early 1960s, gained his greatest fame for his two Blue Note albums (Evolution and Some Other Stuff) which were quite adventurous. He also worked with Archie Shepp, became involved in free jazz and spent much of the 1970s and '80s as a music educator. Dental problems resulted in Moncur only playing once in a great while in the 1990s. He had been in obscurity for quite awhile when he was contacted by arranger Mark Masters for the Exploration project. Fortunately Moncur's playing proved to still be in his prime. Masters wrote sympathetic charts for many of the trombonist's finest pieces, utilizing an all-star nonet that could really dig into the inside/outside music. "Excursion," a very coherent three-minute free improvisation, is a change-of-pace and precedes the closing blues "Sonny's Back," a 1962 piece originally played by the Jazztet. This CD overall is very rewarding, a dream project for those who have long admired the underrated Grachan Moncur. The musicians have their solos, there are both written ...

"Music From A Sinking Ship is the debut full length album by Philip D'Agostino. Music From A Sinking Ship is a brilliantly crafted album with hints of so many different styles and genres of music that make this album so enjoyable to listen to. The album is all instrumental but the array of different instruments used definitely adds different voices and layers to the songs. "The Tyrant Majority Rides Again" is the first track and it hits you with a strong dose of electric buzz that later transitions into an upbeat, jazzy piano tune - and that's only the beginning. "The Paper Street Scam" is a short but sweet song with brushed drums, distant panning and sheer beauty. The prominent saxophone use in "Knee Deep" really gives the song a jazz vibe.
