Soundtrack English THE PROPOSAL could have been a strictly script-by-numbers affair, but hilarious performances by Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds improve this romantic comedy. Publishing powerhouse Margaret Tate (Bullock, TWO WEEKS NOTICE) is used to getting her way. She bullies her ambitious assistant, Andrew Paxton (Reynolds, DEFINITELY, MAYBE), earning the ire of all the underlings at Colden Books in New York City. But Margaret, a native Canadian, finds her career in jeopardy when she is denied a visa and learns she will be sent northward. She forces Andrew to become her fiancé, but she’ll have to take a trip home to Alaska with him to prove to U.S. Immigration that their impending union is genuine.
What ensues is a combination of GREEN CARD, THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA, and GREEN ACRES, with the hell-in-heels boss trying to fake a romance with her assistant as she struggles to survive as a city girl in the country. However, THE PROPOSAL proves to be more than the sum of its parts; Bullock has been one of Julia Roberts’s successors to the America’s-sweetheart crown since she starred in SPEED, but this comedy has her challenging her image with hilarious ease. Reynolds--who could be just window-dressing with his good looks and easy charm--is an excellent foil who is just as adept with sarcasm as he is with a smile. The two stars are supported by an impressive cast, including Betty White as Andrew’s scheming 90-year-old grandmother, Craig T. Nelson as his disappointed father, and THE OFFICE’s Oscar Nunez as an ubiquitous resident of his hometown. THE PROPOSAL may offer few surprises in the way of plot, but the on-screen talent keeps the film feeling fresh. Proposal Reviews: 3 stars out of 5 -- "First-time screenwriter Peter Chiarelli's dialogue has a wry Big Apple zing....A pedigree cast, fun premise and punchy dialogue make Bullock's return to romantic comedy look a great catch..."-- Kate Stables, Total Film "[S]aved by fizzy screwball chemistry between the hunky, snarky Reynolds and Bullock, who hasn't been this appealing since, well, SPEED." -- Grade: B-- Chris Nashawaty, Entertainment Weekly 3 stars out of 4 -- "[Bullock] is likable here because she doesn't overdo it....THE PROPOSAL is much enhanced by all of the supporting performances."-- Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times 3 stars out of 5 -- "THE PROPOSAL is rooted in the most classical of conventions and still finds ways to be surprisingly enchanting. Most credit should go to the criminally underappreciated Sandra Bullock and the reliably disarming Ryan Reynolds."-- Sara Schieron, Box Office "[A]n engaging, well-crafted lark that proves 'high concept' isn't necessarily a tired tactic....Bullock also is talented enough to play convincingly against her genial image here as the proverbial boss from hell..."Hollywood Reporter "Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds prove a likable duo....Reynolds has the appropriate good looks, easygoing charm and comic timing to be a natural in this setting..."-- Claudia Puig, USA Today "Bullock's deft physical comedy, one of her most endearing qualities, is given a full run. And Reynolds' ability to deliver a line, or a look, with withering, surgical precision is there at every turn."-- Betsy Sharkey, Los Angeles Times Proposal | List Price | $29.99 (You save $6.60) | | Studio | Touchstone / Disney | | Orig Year | 2009 | | DVD Encoding | Region 1 | | All Time Sales Rank | 10212 | | CD Universe Part number | 7816098 | | Catalog number | 10306700 | | Discs | 1 | | Release Date | Oct 13, 2009 | | Rating | PG-13 (MPAA) | | Running Time | 108 Minutes | | Additional Info | Widescreen; Dubbed; Subtitled | | Movie Details | Color; Widescreen; Dubbed; Subtitled |

$23.39 This big-screen adaptation of LAND OF THE LOST stars Will Ferrell as Dr. Rick Marshall, a quantum paleontologist who has been discredited in the scientific world due to his strident belief in time travel as the cure for all of humanity's problems. After hitting an all-time low (giving a lecture to elementary-school kids), Dr. Marshall meets an ambitious young scientist named Holly (Anna Friel), who tells him she has followed all his work and believes he's a genius. Spurred on by her enthusiasm, he finishes building the device that will allow him to time travel--something he promptly does along with Holly and fireworks salesman Will (Danny McBride), ...

$23.39 Mark Waters (MEAN GIRLS, JUST LIKE HEAVEN) directs this spin on A CHRISTMAS CAROL starring Matthew McConaughey as Connor Mead, a womanizing photographer with major commitment issues. Begrudgingly attending the wedding of his little brother, Paul (Breckin Meyer), in snowy Newport, Rhode Island, the caddish Connor encounters Jenny (Jennifer Garner), a former love he hurt in the past. He also runs into the ghost of his Uncle Wayne (Michael Douglas), the playboy who essentially raised the two boys and whom Connor has tried to emulate. Wayne tells his nephew that he’ll be visited by three ghosts over the course of the evening: the ghosts of girlfriends past, present, and future. Reviewing his love life while simultaneously attending his brother’s wedding weekend leads to some comical moments as Connor tries to reconcile the two. He also has to fend off Jenny's potential new love (Daniel Sunjata) if he wants to win her back.
McConaughey has the heartbreaker swagger down pat, and proves in this film that he can make any character charming. Garner brings a vulnerability to Jenny, who can’t seem to help caring about the roguish Connor despite her best efforts. Douglas is fun as the ghost of Uncle Wayne, keeping his 1970s ...

$23.39 After nearly two decades of successful detours into mature thrillers (THE GIFT, A SIMPLE PLAN) and superhero blockbusters (the Spider-Man series), director Sam Raimi returns--full tilt--to his scrappy horror roots with DRAG ME TO HELL. Alison Lohman stars as Christine Brown, a soft-spoken Southern girl with a good heart, a PhD-toting boyfriend (Justin Long), and a job as a loan officer at a bank just outside of Los Angeles. When evicting a vile and negligent old woman named Mrs. Ganush (Lorna Raver) seems to be the only way to secure an important promotion, Christine pushes her moral flexibility about as far as it can go (not very far at all) only to dearly pay the price as the recipient of a rather nasty curse. The next three days of Christine’s life amount to an unimaginable endurance test in which she is subject to physical and psychological torture while a terrifying demon draws ever closer to take her to hell, where she would burn for eternity.
Raimi manages to keep the feverish awfulness of DRAG ME's central concept palpable while layering on his distinctly disturbing and exhilaratingly kinetic macabre-meets-slapstick portraiture, and the result is an efficient celebration of the art of horror movies that’s campy, scary, and fun. Similar to HBO’s classic TALES FROM THE CRYPT series, HELL feels like a living, breathing EC comic. While it may come ...

$23.79 After years of swiping scenes from the leading men in such movies as KNOCKED UP and THE 40-YEAR-OLD VIRGIN, Paul Rudd finally headlines a star vehicle of his own. Unlike those Judd Apatow productions, it's John Hamburg (ALONG CAME POLLY) who directs I LOVE YOU, MAN, albeit with many of the touchstones of Apatow's highly successful freaks-and-geeks-with-heart aesthetic. In other words, this is not an Apatow film, but, with the male capacity for--and simultaneous inability to express--fraternal love as its core comic conceit (and emotional centerpiece), it may as well be.
Rudd plays Peter Klaven, a real estate agent with a blossoming career and an imminent marriage to Zooey (THE OFFICE's Rashida Jones)--basically, he's lucky in all things except male bonding. The narrative arc centers on his quest for platonic man-love--as opposed to, say, finding the girl of his dreams--and follows the boilerplate dictates of a standard rom-com with a subversive wink. In this case, boy meets boy, boys bond over their common love of Rush and Andre the Giant, boys break up and make up, etc. Rudd and co-star Jason Segel (FORGETTING SARAH MARSHALL), a fellow Apatow alum who plays Sydney Fife, the Type B object of Klaven's affection, imbue their roles with winning charisma and elevate the plot with real and nuanced chemistry. With a whip-smart pace, the film continually tills fresh comic ground as Hamburg finds punctuation points in every scene and never lets a gag overstay its welcome. While the supporting cast features many memorable turns by the likes of Jon Favreau, Jaime Pressly, and Andy Samberg, I LOVE YOU, MAN ultimately belongs to Rudd, who approaches ...
