Offering a great lesson in British thrash metal history, Candlelight Records brings two classic albums back into the spotlight. Sacrilege's BEHIND THE REALMS OF MADNESS and WITHIN THE PROPHECY (originally released in 1985 and 1987 respectively) largely influenced the thrash and extreme metal movement in the U.K. during the late 1980s. Interestingly, Sacrilege was among the very few female-fronted thrash metal bands ever to exist. The band's music was raw, crusty, and brutal, with a veiled sense of melody. BEHIND spits punk-inspired streetwise venom, while WITHIN bulldozes the listener with thick riffs and refined compositions. Combined, the set is a massive slab of classic metal.

Within The Prophecy
$10.99 VOODOO won the 2001 Grammy Award for Best R&B Album. "Untitled (How Does It Feel)" won the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance. The song was also nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best R&B Song.
When D'Angelo popped on the scene in '97 with his critical and commercial breakthrough BROWN SUGAR, he brought a gush of refreshing air to the musty world of soulful, sensual R&B. When VOODOO was released, little in the R&B world had changed, as the same stale, color-by-numbers vocals sung over the simplest of beats--ripped off from Teddy Riley or Timbaland--dominated the genre. But once again, the singer/songwriter (for that's what he is) dropped a dose of energy into the soul planet with his invigorating, jazzy, funky, constantly metamorphosing sophomore effort.
While much of VOODOO is not entirely original, D'Angelo does wear his influences on his sleeve, particularly those of Prince and Marvin Gaye. D'Angelo does so many things well that by the time he is finished, it's hard to question whether his sound is his own or an exacting mesh of all that's come before. Truly it doesn't matter, ...

Within The Prophecy
$13.05 Almost by definition, every musical genre (and the Bay Area thrash metal scene was no exception) is launched by a small number of outstanding artists who go on to inspire a slew of second and third 'tier' acts (read: followers). Inevitably, these followers manage to ape the originators with varying success, only to fall prey to historical inconsequence ...
| | Witchcraft Firewood CD (2005)
Within The Prophecy
$13.79 Ask a group of doom metal or stoner rock enthusiasts what band was the blueprint for the doom/stoner field, and the vast majority will -- without hesitation -- say Black Sabbath. So when a band is as Sabbath-influenced as Witchcraft, it is understandable that some headbangers would describe them as a doom band. But Witchcraft isn't nearly as forceful or as heavy as Eyehategod, Orange Goblin, or Toadliquor, and Firewood isn't typical of what has been considered doom metal and stoner rock in the '90s and 2000 -- actually, this 2005 release shows no awareness of post-'80s metal or even post-'70s metal. Rather, Firewood is a total throwback to the heavy metal, hard rock, and psychedelic rock of the late '60s and very early '70s. Black Sabbath's first few albums with Ozzy Osbourne are a strong influence, and the Swedish band's other inspirations include Jethro Tull, Cream, Uriah Heep, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, and the great but underexposed Budgie. If one didn't know for sure that Firewood was a 2005 recording, it would be easy to assume that the disc was recorded around 1969 or 1970 -- ...

Within The Prophecy
$18.25 A punk rock landmark if ever there was one, Discharge's Hear Nothing, See Nothing, Say Nothing is one of the most bleak, angry albums to ever grace the underground. The album is important on all sorts of levels, from what it did to the British hardcore scene to the long-lasting effect it had on heavy metal. And the worst part is that time has slowly erased the album from the minds of punk rockers, although the heavy metal tendencies of the band had always made them outcasts in their own scene. But this is the real thing, filled with bitter tirades against the government and predicting all-out nuclear destruction with chilling detail. The unrelenting ...
