TELL NO ONE starts off innocently enough: sunlight streams through the trees at a gorgeous summer home as an Otis Redding song plays. But the ominous title is apt: the events in this French thriller based a Harlan Coben novel soon turn dark. Happily married couple Alex (François Cluzet) and Margot (Marie-Josée Croze) go for a swim, but their idyllic evening is interrupted by a brutal attack. Alex is knocked unconscious, and his wife is murdered. Almost a decade later, that night still haunts Alex. He receives an email pointing him to a link to a live webcam, where he sees a woman who looks remarkably like his dead wife turn and stare into the camera. Hope and confusion mount, but a discovery at the crime scene causes Alex to become the prime suspect in his wife's death, a murder that was thought to have been solved years ago. When TELL NO ONE played in its native France, it picked up four César awards, the country's equivalent of the Oscar, and it's easy to see why. Director Guillame Canet (who also plays a small role in the film) has crafted a taut, well-told film. TELL NO ONE's narrative journey is filled with numerous twists and turns, but the audience is content to be along for the ride with Canet at the wheel. There are elements of Hitchcock and THE FUGITIVE, but the film never feels like a rip-off of the classics. It's a gripping, entertaining tale that features solid performances, especially from Canet (L'ENFER) and Kristin Scott Thomas in a supporting role.

Tell No One Reviews:

"Based on a Harlan Coben novel, this top-notch thriller from France is so twisty you may forget to breathe....It's as much a despairing love story as an edge-of-your-seat affair."-- Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times

"TELL NO ONE is about an innocent man on the run with nowhere to turn....[Mr. Cluzet] is a convincing Everyman with a heat and soul stretched to the breaking point."-- Stephen Holden, New York Times

"It's THE BIG SLEEP meets VERTIGO with a dash of CSI....TELL NO ONE's plot thickens in about five ways at once, but they're all connected." -- Grade: A--- Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly

"TELL NO ONE is engaging in a tension-mounting, tightly wound kind of way....The cast here is uniformly superb, especially Kristin Scott Thomas..."-- Priya Jain, Premiere

Included in Entertainment Weekly's 2008 Films Of The Year -- "[A]s artfully dense as THE BIG SLEEP, as painfully romantic as VERTIGO..."-- Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly

3.5 stars out of 4 -- "It contains a rich population of characters, but has been so carefully cast that we're never confused....One of the film's pleasures is its unexpected details..."-- Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

3 stars out of 5 -- "Chopping back and forth in time, it's dynamically shot....Canet has rounded up a real 'Who's Who' of French acting talent..."-- Tom Dawson, Total Film

4 stars out of 5 -- "[T]his sees Guillaume Canet going for broke, piling twist upon twist....It's bursting with ideas..."-- Chris Roberts, Uncut

4 stars out of 5 -- "At the heart of Guillaume Canet's film -- in every sense -- is Francois Cluzet's award-winning performance..."-- Rob Fraser, Empire

After PRIDE AND PREJUDICE and ATONEMENT, Keira Knightley continues her reign as the queen of the period film with this 18th-century costume drama. The corset-clad actress stars as Georgiana Spenser, the Duchess of Devonshire. With her marriage to the duke (Ralph Fiennes), Georgiana achieves an impressive level of fame as Britons follow both her clothing style and her political advice. But even celebrity and wealth can't act as a salve in her marriage to the boring, boorish duke. When he begins to flaunt his affairs, Georgiana is tempted to return to a teenage crush, Charles Grey (Dominic Cooper of THE HISTORY BOYS), to the anger of her husband and her mother (Charlotte Rampling, SWIMMING POOL). Fiennes's portrayal of the duke ranks roughly with his Lord Voldemort on a scale of beastly behavior, but the acclaimed actor manages to give him a level of humanity that far surpasses what he deserves. THE DUCHESS focuses on the lack of power possessed by Georgiana and, in fact, all women of her time, and the duke is the primary agent of her suppression. As she has done with other period ...

Beginning just hours after the original HELLRAISER ended, HELLBOUND finds young Kristy (Laurence) waking up in a mental institution because she insisted on describing her parents murderers as pain-loving demons from hell to the authorities. Unfortunately, she has been placed in the car of Dr. Channard, who has devoted his life to solving the Lament Configuration, the key to the doorway of hell, and now, with Kristy, he believes he has found another key. Resuscitating the skinless corpse of her stepmother, Julia, Dr. Channard succeeds in opening a doorway to hell, one that Julia, Channard, Kristy, and her mute friend Tiffany all travel through. Based on a story by Clive Barker, HELLBOUND is both a continuation of the original as well as a much different take on its story and universe. Here, the film ...

The official soundtrack to the 2009 hit comic book movie is not your typical collection of hard-and-heavy rock anthems and hip-hop party songs. With the exception of My Chemical Romance's amped-up cover of Bob Dylan's "Desolation Row," it is a sobering blend of standards from days past. Complementing the somber mood and flashback sequences throughout the film, songs like Dylan's "The Times ...

In the fourth season of this hilariously subversive series, Mary-Louise Parker is back as pot-dealing widow and single mother Nancy Botwin. Thanks to some drastic occurrences, Nancy is forced to relocate her family from the idyllic Agrestic township to the home of her caustic father-in-law (Albert Brooks) in a small town near the border of Mexico, thereby leaving behind her business with Conrad and Heylia indefinitely. Soon enough, however, Nancy is waist-deep in a whole new world of problems involving her sons’ raging hormones; her new drug-trafficking partner, ...

Released in a post-globalization economy teetering on the brink of a depression, THE INTERNATIONAL admirably stays in step with its time. Screenwriter Eric Singer hangs this man-against-the-machine action-thriller not on the Russians, North Koreans, or turncoats in the C.I.A., but on the I.B.B.C., an international bank that wields power through crippling debt. With villains like these, viewers fretting over their own mortgage rates will find themselves rooting zealously for these crooked financiers to fall hard. Interpol agent Louis Salinger (Clive Owen) and his partner, New York Assistant D.A. Eleanor Whitman (the somewhat underused Naomi Watts), are consistently stonewalled by local law enforcement in their attempt to close in on the bank’s insiders. The conflict deepens two-fold as Salinger discovers not only how wide the bank’s nefarious influence spreads, but how loosely he will act within legal boundaries to get his man. Owen elevates the at-times standard espionage plot devices with his now trademark (but always riveting) me-against-the-worldisms: his hard-edged focus and steely moral clarity. Armin Mueller-Stahl also stands out in the cast as a weathered ex-communist revolutionary now finding himself in the epicenter of capitalist corruption. With spirited but tight direction, Tom Tykwer (of RUN, LOLA, RUN and THE PRINCESS AND THE WARRIOR fame) emphasizes longer action sequences and a more ...
