| | Xavier Cugat Latin Rhythms For Dancing CD (2002)
Solo songs
$7.15 Recorded between 1941 & 1955. Includes liner notes by Joe Conzo.
The man who helped to invent Latin dance music, the Spanish-born icon was an active musical force for eight decades, playing a diverse array of styles, from the mambo to the tango. LATIN RHYTHMS FOR DANCING is a starter couse of Cugat's music, and includes ten infectious tracks.
Xavier Cugat had a recording career that stretched over many more years than are covered on this collection. But this single-disc, 26-song anthology of sides from the 1940s and 1950s has to be considered the best collection of his work. This was Cugat's prime, and the tracks boast better fidelity than those he made prior to 1940, if one considers his prime to have started earlier. Hearing these lively and exceptionally well-performed, pioneering blends of Latin, jazz, and pop music, one is surprised that Cugat has not gotten more serious critical respect along the lines of Machito and Tito Puente. The 1940-1957 span ensures a good deal of variety in the orchestral players and the numerous featured vocalists, with Miguelito Valdés handling those more often ...

| | Julieta Venegas Bueninvento CD (2000)
Solo CD music
$7.59 BEUNINVENTO was nominated for the 2001 Latin Grammy Award for Best Rock Solo Vocal Album. "Hoy No Quiero" was nominated for the 2001 Latin Grammy Award for Best Rock Song.
Julieta Venegas made a remarkable debut in 1998 with Aquí, an album of enormous breadth and boldness. Her follow-up, Bueninvento, is no less bold, though it is more stylistically consistent from beginning to end. The piano songs that characterized the second half of Aquí are nowhere to be found on Bueninvento, as Venegas instead delves headlong into the style of driving rock en español exemplified by "De Mis Pasos," one of the two singles from Aquí. Like "De Mis Pasos," the songs of Bueninvento are driven by drums (often programmed), accordion accents, electric guitar, and compelling choruses. There's also a lot of keyboard, which becomes evident immediately, on the album-opener, "Fé," which sounds like an amped-up rewrite of "Cómo Sé," the other single from Aquí. The second song on Bueninvento, "Hoy No Quiero," makes evident the degree to which guitars play a large role in driving these songs with aggressive forward momentum. In fact, the entire opening stretch of songs showcases the qualities of Bueninvento; for instance, "Casa Abandonada," the third song, opens with a minute-long ...

R E V I E W BENISE Mediterranea review by Michael DebbageBordered by countries such as Spain, Italy, Turkey and the northern continent of Africa, the Mediterranean Sea embraces both placid and provocative cultures that ultimately beckons the exotica factor. This disc is appropriately entitled, empowering images that describe the musical world of Benise. Though largely flamenco based, Benise has a carnival salsa feel to it giving the music a very authentic foundation. Add the balladry of Benise and the results are a musical kaleidoscope of celebration and romance.Mediterranea exudes professionalism from packaging to production to performance - as does the website. Roni Benise is a self-taught guitarist who has been playing since he was 11. His influence is largely flamenco yet, much like his peers Jesse Cook and Johannes Linstead, the music is very melodic and accessible [and] also incredibly authentic. Benise is equally comfortable in commemoration as well as the festive factor. However, things kick off in a wild fashion courtesy of the opening track "Rhumba Rhumba" that is utterly enthusiastic. What a thumper it is with its stop and start themes. Keep your feet still... I just dare you to try! While not quite as vigorous, the gorgeous "Santa Barbara" has a wonderful liquid flow to its rhythm section bringing to mind the vivid memories of a gentle bike ride along the elegant coastline and sandy beaches of Santa Barbara. Much like its colorful and classy downtown, the song mirrors its subject. Anyone up for a road trip? It will take you there in an instant. But no need to stay on the mainland. Take a trip to the exotica, courtesy of the very internationally flavored "Guitaria" that gives Roni an opportunity to flex his amazing guitar technique. In contrast, "Tribal" allows the percussion work of Carlos Lopez and C.G. Ryche to shine. Fans of Jesse Cook will eat this one up with its carnival opening and consistent rhythmic themes.Equally adept with ...
