In early 2009, Fonovisa Records celebrated its 25th anniversary with the release of two double-CD compilations: Las 25 Mas Romanticas con los Supergrupos (The 25 Most Romantic Songs with the Supergroups) and La Historia de los Exitos (The History of the Hits). The former focuses on groups exclusively, whereas La Historia de los Exitos spotlights a combination of groups and solo artists -- and on both compilations, one is reminded how major a role Fonovisa has been playing in the regional Mexican market. That isn't to say that Fonovisa releases regional Mexican music exclusively; the label has, along the way, signed some Latin artists who aren't Mexican-oriented (for example, the Puerto Rican singer Noelia). But regional Mexican music has accounted for a big chunk of Fonovisa's profits -- and it certainly dominates La Historia de los Exitos, which boasts major hits by regional Mexican stars such as Los Tigres del Norte ("La Puerta Negra" and "Golpes en el Corazon"), Bronco ("Que No Quede Huella"), Los Rieleros del Norte ("Dime Quien Es"), Conjunto Primavera ("Necesito Decirte"), the seminal Banda el Recodo ("No Me Se Rajar"), and the edgy banda singer Jenni Rivera ("De Contrabando"). But this compilation steps outside of regional Mexican music with Enrique Iglesias' "Si Tu Te Vas," and it's important to note that Mexican superstar Marco Antonio Solís (who is heard on his solo smashes "Si No Te Hubieras Ido" and "Mas Que Tu Amigo" as well as "Tu Carcel" with his former group Los Bukis) is primarily a romantic Latin pop singer even though he is quite capable of performing or composing rancheras when he wants to. Solís has a huge Mexican following, and millions of non-Mexican Latinos all over the Spanish-speaking world also buy his albums religiously. Nonetheless, regional Mexican music is still a crucial part of La Historia de los Exitos, which is full of definitive gems and has no problem illustrating Fonovisa's importance in the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s. ~ Alex Henderson La Historia De Los Exitos Music La Historia De Los Exitos Songs La Historia De Los Exitos Review

La Historia De Los Exitos
$8.69 This 1991 followup to 1987's successful CANCIONES DE MI PADRE continues Linda Ronstadt's innovative musical exploration of her roots. Once again, producer and arranger Ruben Fuentes is on hand to provide authentic orchestral accompaniment to classic Mexican songs handpicked by Linda and her brothers, who sing together as a trio on several tracks. The orchestra is also bit smaller this time, which perhaps accounts for Ronstadt's greater confidence ...

La Historia De Los Exitos
$10.59 The second volume of Bloodshot Records' alt country sampler boasts an early track by the hauntingly voiced genre superstar Richard Buckner, whose "22" sounds like it was written in the 18th century, as well as one of the first stirrings of alt country bad boys the Waco Brothers with their prophetic "Bad Times Are Coming Round Again." The movement's developing popularity is displayed by the Old 97s, who are glimpsed on their meteoric rise to alt country fame on the perky "Por Favor," but it's the World Famous Blue Jays who bring the whole enterprise back down to earth, closing the bar down with their impeccable truck-driving instrumental, "Mud Flap Boogie."

| | Rupert Hine Wildest Wish To Fly CD (1983) (Import)
La Historia De Los Exitos
$18.09 The 1983 LP Wildest Wish to Fly closed Rupert Hine's early-'80s solo output. The album took another step toward more conventional pop songs. The lush production, intelligent lyrics, and precise songcrafting qualities of Hine still make it an enjoyable record, but the weird sounds, bleak atmospheres, and daring artistic choices found on the 1981 Immunity are now history. The best moments are found in "No Yellow Heart," "Victim of Wanderlust," and the title track. A few songs are based on subjects revolving around technology ("The Saturation of the Video Rat" on television, "Picture-Phone"), which gives an outdated aura to this particular record. The album's release history is confusing and deserves to be straightened out. It first appeared worldwide, excluding North America, in May 1983. A different version, with one extra song ("Blue Flame") and two missing ("Victim of Wanderlust" and "The Saturation of the Video Rat") replaced by tracks from Immunity, was released in the U.S. and Canada in March 1984. A third version was released in the U.K. in February 1985 with "Blue Flame" taking the place of "Living in Sin." Other tracks had also been remixed, re-edited, and even partly re-recorded. The 2001 CD reissue on Voiceprint's imprint Misplaced is based on the original 1983 LP, with "Blue Flame" and a later version of "No Yellow Heart" added as bonus tracks. ~ François Couture
This version of "The Wildest Wish To Fly" is primarily the first and original version prior to any re-mixes or re-edits. There are two tracks of "No Yellow Heart", one which was the first original version and other a later version which Rupert describes ...
