Short Biography- By Scott YanowMark Kramer, who recently released Troubled Times (release late 2008), a set of brilliant duets with bassist Eddie Gomez, has had a productive, colorful and consistently creative career as a pianist, arranger-composer, producer/engineer and occasional educator.Born in Philadelphia, he began playing classical violin when he was five. Always an adventurous improviser, Kramer gravitated towards jazz, teaching himself saxophone, bass and drums before settling on piano. As a teenager and while in his twenties he played locally with such masterful musicians as Michael Brecker, Randy Brecker, Charles Fambrough, Stanley Clarke and Eric Gravatt in addition to heading his own trios. Throughout his career Mark continued to perform with his old friends, and also performed with such greats as George Coleman, Jimmy Cobb, Lee Konitz, Tal Farlow, Junior Cook, Billy Hart, Roy Hargrove, Tom Harrell, Archie Shepp and many others. Kramer also became involved in some unusual projects for major labels including recording the largest known body of jazz renditions of complete Broadway shows (eight scores including Evita, The Sound Of Music, Rent and Sophisticated Ladies). He reharmonized an entire Mozart symphony and recorded it with his trio. He also recorded jazz interpretations of the main themes from John Williams’ score for Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. Mix one part U.K. post-punk revival, one part Canadian mega-band bombast, and one part twee Kiwi-pop, and you have New Zealand's Cut Off Your Hands. Dabbling in several varied styles, their own sound is still a singular one. Nick Johnston's vocals are a key to their distinctiveness; he sounds emotive but not wimpy. On the standout track, "Turn Cold," he begs himself not to become too jaded, over Michael Ramirez's slashing, melodic guitars.
Put together a bright, breezy guitar pop group with two respected producers and it should be a can't-miss proposition.
