Julianna Barwick Magic Place CD (2011)
Julianna Barwick put out the album Sanguine and the EP Florine on her own before unveiling The Magic Place, but since the latter is released through the Asthmatic Kitty label, it's likely to expose Barwick's bewitching sound to a lot more people. The young Louisiana-bred, Brooklyn-based (where else?) artist's unusual approach to music subtly tweaks the usual categories -- is she a vocal ambient artist, a wordless singer/songwriter, or perhaps an a cappella folktronica performer? The answer, naturally, is all and none of the above. Whatever you call the ethereal sounds emanating from The Magic Place, they're made almost entirely from overdubbed layers of Barwick's soft, feathery vocals, though she abjures lyrics in favor of more non-specific sounds. The closest equivalent might be the Cocteau Twins with Liz Fraser's vocal track soloed, and multiplied a dozen times, or contemporary one-man band How to Dress Well minus the slow-jam R&B grooves. Barwick says that the album's title refers to a fondly remembered tree from her childhood, and that her modus operandi is partly inspired by singing in church in her youth. The further into The Magic Place you venture, the more sense both of those facts start to make; this is the stuff of half-remembered childhood dreams whose hazy details melt into a sweet, achingly nostalgic sort of sonic frieze, and it's the kind of thing that seems like it would be right at home resounding off the walls of some sun-speckled chapel. Non-vocal tones do occasionally pop up here, most notably some well-placed piano lines, but Barwick's voice is undeniably the focus here, in all its evocative, otherworldly glory. ~ J. Allen

Noel Hill Noel Hill & Tony MacMahon CD (1992)
Along with ace accordionist Tony MacMahon, Hill played three evenings in a pub in county Cork in October 1985. The sessions were taped and a live album produced. It's the kind of album that makes you wish you'd been there. ~ Steve Winick

Broderick Gray Realms Of Fire CD (2008)
Broderick Gray (Rick) is not a novice in the U.S. Underground scene. While picking up the guitar as a child, he studied hard to develop an advanced guitar technique and is now considered one of the virtuosos of the Neo-Classical genre in the U.S. scene. While co-operating with many bands including Timejam, Mass of Virtue, Amethyst, Allegiance, Nyxx, Metal in Action and Final Prophecy, among others. Gray was also constantly working on new musical ideas for his solo project entitled "Mythic Force". "Realms of Fire" is once again a collection of Gray's ideas which ended up as instrumentals. Even from a flashy listening, it's obvious that he is deeply focused on executing powerful Neo-Classical Metal instrumentals with catchy melodies and often extraordinarily fast and extremely skilful playing.

UltraMax Symphony In Trance CD (2009)
WAITING IWaiting...I'm waiting for you...Waiting....by closed cold door.
Waiting...I'm waiting for you...I kept your footprints on the floor...
Waiting...I'm waiting for you.
Waiting...in aweful dark place
Waiting...I'm waiting for you,And all I want - to see your face!
Crying...I'm crying for you...Crying...and years go by.
Dying...I'm dying for you...And every night I wake and cry!
Why, or why, couln't we stay together?!Why, or why, did not I see you leave?!Morning comes brining the rain and snow...I lay down wathcing the swirling leaves...
Pain and sorrowfor tomorrow.
I will carry onthrough another day.
Background Slow Lines
Love still lives...In my dreams...Every dayI pray and wait
Love still shinesIn my shrineI still waitFor a sunny day
Spoken Word Whisper Lines
Anguish mixed with tearsBrings up the deepest fears,Anger mixed with sadnessThrows me into blinding madnessAnd into the whisper loveThat once was so strong,And now practically gone!
Love dissolves...Like the shadow of me on the wall.
I too dissolve in the echos of time,With my pain taking form of this rhyme.
I remember how you used to care,How your eyes used with passion to glare,And your smile was sincere and pure,And our love was so strong and so sure!
Now gone! It' all hopelessly gone!Seems the time had its victory won -I succumb to my desperate plight...In the shadow of terrible fightThat left one of us goneAnd the other's heart-tornIn a desolate sobering night.
Rain or snow,I don't knowHow can I want my lifeWhen all I want is you.
IIWaiting...I'm waiting for you.
Waiting...in aweful dark place
Waiting...I'm waiting for you,And all I want -Is you!
