| | Frank & Steve Ordinary Man CD (2008)
Finbar Furey
$16.45 Frank and Steve first met during their college days in the 1970s.âI had been banging Rock and Roll on electric guitar for 5 years,â explains Steve, duo spokesperson. âFrank came from Folk Music. It was two different worlds.âThen artists like Crosby, Stills, & Nash emerged, and suddenly main stream rock had a niche for soft acoustic guitars. âIt became cool.â Steve says.A convert to acoustic rock, Steve accepted Frankâs invitation to form a cover band that toured the coffeehouse circuit. But after each rehearsal- when other band mates went home- Frank and Steve hung out to compose songs. âWe were both natural writers,â Steve explains, âEveryone else in the band wanted to sound like the radio.â It became apparent that the pair enjoyed writing more than working in a band. âIt was all about the fun factor,â Steve says. After a few introverted years together, Frank and Steve joined forces with another duo to form an âall original songâ band. âThat didnât go over too well with the bar owners,â Steve admits, âBut they loved us at the Bitter End.â (Manhattanâs famous showcase club for new musical talent where Bob Dylan did his internship). However, the lure of money eventually convinced the band to modify their strategy and start playing covers of hit songs. Looking back, Steve admits: âWe sold out.â Their dream of playing original songs fell by the wayside. âWe went where the money was,â Steve explains. âCountry rock was booming. We followed the trail blazed by the film âUrban Cowboyâ.âThey landed some prestigious gigs, opening for both Merle Haggard and Johnny Cash, as well as backing up Roy Rodgers in New York City. But their hearts werenât in it. âPlaying music just became another job,â Steve says.By the mid 1980s the bar scene grind was taking its toll with inner band squabbles and broken marriages. Speaking for himself, Steve confesses: âI was doing 9 gigs a week, playing music I hated to an audience I disrespected, with band mates I couldnât get along with. But most of all I was disappointed in myself for having drifted so far from my dreams.âSeparately, both Frank and Steve came to the decision that bar gigs must end. âWe admitted we just werenât performers cut out to be jumping around on a stage. We were song writers.âBoth men returned to the introverted seclusion of writing and recording in home studios. They learned to be competent on several instruments, Frank leaning toward stringed instruments like guitar and bass, earning a living not only by selling instruments, but also by repairing and building them. Steve explored the possibilities of keyboards, piano and organ, and chose to earn a living outside the music ...

Finbar Furey
$20.29 In early 2007, Cedar n Sage Music brought you a âDifferent Kind Of Realâ. Now Cedar n Sage Music is proud to present a âdifferent kind of Christmas albumâ! "Greatest Gift" is Autumnâs Child at their best combining traditional songs of the season with some originals. A South American influenced version of, "What Child Is This" followed by a most intriguing arrangement of "O Come, O Come Emmanuel" with the ancient Armenian instrument the Duduk introducing the piece with Native American Flutes, Setar (a four stringed lute from Iran) a Daf, Persian frame drum and bass. The following piece is an original by Holland - the title track, "Greatest Gift" featuring the Autumnâs Child signature sound, with Native American Flutes and cello, with harp, guitar and percussion. Throughout this recording you find the use of world instruments mixed with the Native Flute - creating the Autumnâs Child sound, "global chamber music".This is best identified in the title track, âGreatest Giftâ. âBring A Torch Jeanette Isabella / Coventry Carolâ features the Native Flute with Hammered Dulcimer. âGod Rest Ye Merry Gentlemenâ is an acoustic influence of Jethro Tull meets Mannheim Steamroller. Here is a listing of some of the ...
