Although it lost its Latin groove quite early, disco wouldn't have sounded quite like it did without the influence of Spanish Harlem's best, including at the forefront, Joe Bataan, whose Salsoul LP provided the inspiration and capital needed to start the best and brightest disco label in history, Salsoul Records. El Barrio: Latin Disco includes 15 tracks by the Fania artists who were recording dance music during the '70s, which didn't include many of its biggest stars (aside from Tito Puente), which results in obscure names such as LTG Exchange, Seguida, W.R.L.C., and Lou Perez. But, for the most part, they come through with excellent Latin nuggets, especially a Latinized version of Chic's "Good Times" by Charanga 76. ~ John Bush
