(1 Customer Review)
Napalm Death got all of their innovation out of the way in the early '80s. Since the release of their landmark, SCUM, it's been all about refining their devastating formula. And while there's only so much wiggle room with grindcore, Napalm continues to find places to take it further. The endless permutations of hardcore punk, thrash metal, and post-punk that initially contributed to their sound continue on their fourteenth album, TIME WAITS FOR NO SLAVE. Singer Barney Greenway remains in fine screaming form, and the band keeps up with their reputation on blitzkrieg blasts like "Diktat" and the lightning-fast "Work to Rule." The title track is a winding road of nimble guitars and surprising melodies, and "Procrastination of the Empty Vessel" hews closer to the pounding post-punk of English bands like Killing Joke. There have been many who picked up Napalm Death's style over the years, but few have equaled them.
Personnel: Mitch Harris (vocals, guitar); Shane Embury (vocals, bass instrument); Barney Greenway (vocals); Danny Herrera (drums).
Alternative Press (p.108) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "For all their impressive depth, the band still find time for blast beats, invigoratingly fast riffs and indecipherable Greenway hisses." Kerrang (Magazine) (p.52) - "Opener 'Strong Arm' is fast, violent and crammed with punk-metal riffage. 'Diktat' adds a death metal thrust and interweaving guitars...." | | Amorphis Skyforger CD (2009)
Time Waits For No Slave songs
$13.09 In melodic death metal and symphonic black metal, the contrast between extreme and non-extreme elements is a lot like the contrast between what jazz musicians call "inside" and "outside" playing. Some avant-garde jazz favors an inside/outside approach; some avant-garde jazz favors outside playing from start to finish -- and similarly, whether a melodic death metal or symphonic black metal album makes greater use of extreme elements or greater use of non-extreme elements depends on the artist. Skyforger, it turns out, is a melodic death metal album that keeps the extreme elements to a bare minimum and is greatly influenced by progressive metal and power metal as well as folk metal. This late 2008/early 2009 recording isn't just slightly melodic -- it is very melodic -- and while Skyforger rocks aggressively much of the time, it is never flat-out vicious. Like a lot of melodic death metal albums, Skyforger offers a contrast between clean vocals and a deep Cookie Monster growl; the Cookie Monster, however, takes a back seat to the clean vocals this time. In fact, extreme elements take such a back seat to non-extreme elements on Skyforger that some headbangers will wonder if this 47-minute CD should even be called death metal. But then, Amorphis' willingness to try different ...
| | Behemoth Evangelion CDs (2009) With DVD; Digipak
Time Waits For No Slave album
$12.15 Behemoth is one of the most ferocious-sounding metal bands on Earth. Vocalist/guitarist Nergal roars less like Cookie Monster and more like a blast furnace; his voice pours from the speakers and blows your hair back. Since 2000's THELEMA.6, the band has been on an unbelievable hot streak, releasing one marathon of unrelenting punishment after another. The nine songs on EVANGELION don't represent any stylistic left turns for Behemoth. The brutal riffing, avalanches of drums, and firestorm vocals are all present throughout, as are Nergal's ...

| | Jodeci Show, The After-Party, The Hotel CD (1995)
Time Waits For No Slave music CDs
$12.15 All songs written or co-written by members of Jodeci. Samples include "I'm Glad You're Mine" (Al Green).
On Jodeci's first two albums, the love songs reigned and there was only a glimpse of their "new jack swing." THE SHOW THE AFTER-PARTY THE HOTEL brings out the funkier side of Jodeci, and properly balances the two.
Jodeci's music is equally rooted in gospel, R&B and hip-hop forms, and, when JoJo, Mr. Dalvin, DeVante and K-Ci sing, each can be heard distinctly. Like most of the album's songs, "Can We Flo" blends an R&B groove and powerful vocals, but succeeds primarily beacuse of the singers' gorgeous harmonies. As background singers for Father MC, Jodeci became skilled in singing over hip-hop beats and they played a major role in the formation of R&B hip-hop. "Fun 2 Nite" epitomizes the genre, and even adapts a brief part of the chorus from Kool & The Gang's "Celebrate." And, as always, Jodeci ably express the sensual portions of their sound ("Freek 'N You").
THE SHOW THE AFTER-PARTY THE HOTEL is a wholly self-generated/produced project: DeVante Swing is responsible for a lion's share of the album's production, songwriting and concept. So, blame him for the fact that after rocking the performance at THE SHOW, Jodeci knowingly slow it down at THE AFTER-PARTY, then freak it at THE HOTEL.
