Sweden may well be the worldwide capital of metal, and Darkane upholds the high standards of Scandinavian thrash on their fifth album, DEMONIC ART. Like At the Gates and In Flames, Darkane mixes jugular-ripping viciousness and a melodic sophistication in a way that makes both sides of the equation even stronger. The title track unleashes wave after wave of lacerating riffage on a track of rapid-fire drumming, but, elsewhere, Darkane slows down and stretches out, such as on the epic, pummeling "Demigod." Both that song and album-closer "Wrath Connection" pile on the drama with layers of crushing sound.Alternative Press (p.118) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "The band's combination of melody and crunch, plush synth-strings and epically wheedly-deedly guitar solos is as awesome as ever, and the high-speed Swedish death-metal sprints keep the listener's heart racing." $13.09 In melodic death metal and symphonic black metal, the contrast between extreme and non-extreme elements is a lot like the contrast between what jazz musicians call "inside" and "outside" playing. Some avant-garde jazz favors an inside/outside approach; some avant-garde jazz favors outside playing from start to finish -- and similarly, whether a melodic death metal or symphonic black metal album makes greater use of extreme elements or greater use of non-extreme elements depends on the artist. Skyforger, it turns out, is a melodic death metal album that keeps the extreme elements to a bare minimum and is greatly influenced by progressive metal and power metal as well as folk metal. This late 2008/early 2009 recording isn't just slightly melodic -- it is very melodic -- and while Skyforger rocks aggressively much of the time, it is never flat-out vicious. Like a lot ...

$10.92 The Earth Band captured live in Boston 1977. Longtime fans of Manfred Mann know that he has a great ear for great songs and quite often records definitive cover versions. Of the 5 covers on this set, 2 were composed by Bob Dylan, ("Father Of Day, Father Of Night" and "The Mighty Quinn", with which Mann hit No. 1 in the 60's), 3 Bruce Springsteen covers ("Blinded By The Light", "Spirit In The Night" and "For You") and finally a Robbie Robertson / John Simon song, "Davy's On The Road Again". The rest are Earth Band originals. This live recording was one of the last to feature bass player Colin Pattenden, who departed at tours end.

$9.29 ALEXANDRE DA COSTA was born in Montreal Canada in 1979. He showed an uncommon interest for both the violin and piano at a very early age. By the age of nine, he had the astounding ability to perform his first concerts with stunning virtuosity on both instruments, which brought him recognition as a musical prodigy. His chosen professional career as a violinist began very early and he was soon performing regularly as soloist with orchestra as well as in recital. In 1998, at the age of 18, he received a Master's degree in violin and a First Prize from the Conservatoire de Musique du Quebec where he studied with Johanne Arel. Concurrently, he also received a Bachelor' s degree in Piano Interpretation from the faculty of music of the University of Montreal. From 1998 to 2001, he studied at the Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofia in Madrid with the violin master Zakhar Bron, teacher of violinists such as Maxim Vengerov and Vadim Repin. $15.19 "I want to let you know that I'm enjoying every second of your fab WITCH music. Brilliant, spine-tingling as always"."The WITCH is truly amazing. One word. WOW. You're quite something. Gorgeous, stirring, evocative"."Congratulations Jon for these brilliant compositions and your talent I'm sure will be transfered to your next film!"."The most original, sensual and incredibly talented electronica artist and film composer to emerge from anywhere in the last five years" (Sight and Sound).Jon Sorensen: "I wrote and developed the story of WITCH in late 1999, and co-wrote an initial draft of the screenplay with British playwright Eric Pringle. It deals with true events surrounding the last "witch" to be burned at the stake in 17th Century Scotland. Think of THE BROTHERHOOD OF THE WOLF meets BRAVEHEART meets HIGHLANDER and you've some idea of the flavour. But that really does'nt even come close. It's very singular in tone. The screenplay was then specifically invited to the Sundance Film Festival in 2000 where it attracted marked Hollywood interest. Blame it on me that you never saw the movie. I refused point-blank to alter or re-write certain elements in the story. This was a first for me. Hollywood is quite rightly a collaborative scripting process. It's a tried and tested system that works laudably in most circumstances and one must be prepared to accommodate that in rewrites or film-making. But not with this screenplay or one of its' nature. It really stands in a genre of its' own. It was later lined up to be made on a very modest budget in the U.K. with a highly respectable cast and crack technical crew, but I then elected to make ALIEN BLOOD, a more accessible project to me at that time and had to be set in 1999 on the eve of the new "millennium", and itself another "feminist" piece strangely enough. Amongst others, an Australian production company then wanted to buy the screenplay to showcase in a period fantasy television series they were doing but again I could'nt part with the script. The atmosphere and the dynamics of the story deal with personal sacrifice and the hounding of natural beauty and natural wisdom through fear and prejudice against a background of mythology and mysticism and war. It is also a very feminine and feminist piece. This symphony of music gives a flavour of the feature film yet to be made in a manner that will yet do it justice. It is dedicated to Michael Kamen. It is also dedicated to the eternal human spirit and to my Scottish Highlander and Viking forefathers. In a sense this project has come full circle, since, in common with many of my film projects, the screenplay was inspired by hearing a chance piece of music, "The Confession Of Isobel Gowdie", by the Scottish composer James MacMillan. I hope you enjoy WITCH and may it, in turn, inspire you". Jon Sorensen, March 2009. Jon Sorensen was born and raised in the Scottish Highlands. As a teenager he saw the films "STAR WARS" and, more significantly, "CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND". He hitch-hiked from Scotland to London and was hired in the visual effects department of the original "ALIEN" where he worked alongside Ridley Scott on ...
