Portrait Of Petula Clark video
$13.95 Here is yet another Perez Prado compilation from the folks at RCA; where Prado recorded from the late '50s until 1968. This one features 17 tracks from 1959-1967; grouped in strange order. It wouldn't be a compilation without "Patricia," -- and this is the definitive version -- a single, actually. Also from the 1959 tracks are "Mambo No. 5," "Mambo No. 8," "One Night," "Mambo Jambo," and "Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White," as well as a few others. These are the shimmy classics -- raw and dirty and full of Prado's patented take on big band swing set against a Latin backbeat. Of the later tunes, "Rockamabo Baby" and "San Remo," from 1960, as well as "La Rubia" and "Adios Pampa Mia," are quite beautiful, with the 1967 selections being a bit bogus actually; they feel forced and contrived. Despite the ...
| | Kris Kristofferson Kristofferson CD (1970)
Portrait Of Petula Clark film
$7.59 KRISTOFFERSON is a remastered version of ME & BOBBY MCGEE that contains four bonus tracks.
Originally released in 1970 as KRISTOFFERSON on Monument (18139) and in 1971 as ME & BOBBY MCGEE on Columbia (30817). Includes liner notes by Johnny Cash, Billy Swan, and Al Cooley.
Digitally remastered by Joseph M. Palmaccio (Sony Studios, New York, New York).
Kris Kristofferson's remarkable 1970 debut has one foot in the world of the longhaired rock & roll outlaw and the other firmly entrenched in the country story-song tradition. Alternating between a buttery, off-center croon and a hickory-smoked morning-after rasp, Kristofferson spins evocative tales of drunks, lonely hearts, and misfits, with nimble guitar work and an overwhelmingly literary attention to detail.
The leadoff track, "Blame It on the Stones," is a woozy ...
| | Patti Page Today My Way/Honey Come Back CD (2003)
Portrait Of Petula Clark review
$10.65 This two-fer from Collectables features a pair of out of print Patti Page LPs, Today My Way and Honey Come Back, originally released on Columbia in 1967 and 1970, respectively. These albums zero in on easy listening versions of popular love songs from the '60s and early '70s. The rather formulaic treatments work best on the well-known compositions of the period, especially "Gentle On My Mind," "Can't Take My Eyes Off You," and "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head." Not an essential purchase for casual listeners, but fans who have been waiting for these LPs to make the switch to CD will appreciate it. ~ Al ...
| | Brenda Lee Brenda That's All/ All Alone Am I CD (2006) (Import) United Kingdom
Portrait Of Petula Clark DVD
$16.65 Brenda That's All/All Alone Am I, one of Ace's numerous two-for-one packages of early Brenda Lee material, combines her 1962 album Brenda, That's All and her 1963 album All Alone Am I onto one CD, adding historical liner notes. Like almost all of her early albums, Brenda, That's All was a mix of material that seemed designed to highlight her versatility. Pop music was at the center, but there were various shades of country, R&B, and the adult contemporary market. It's not a scintillating record, but it's pretty good, in part because it avoids the overemphasis on adult pop standards that hurt some of her LPs from the period. "Fool #1" and "You Can Depend on Me" (which had actually been released as singles the year before most of the sessions for Brenda, That's All took place) are the only hits, but there are some good tracks here, whether the buoyant "I'm Sitting ...

| | Trini Lopez In London CD (1967)
Portrait Of Petula Clark video
$9.95 As the liner notes say, "Trini Lopez and London go together like mini skirts and birds!" Who could argue with that? After all, the writer also informs listeners that Lopez is "at the center of the whole swingin' world!" Well, at least the album definitely does swing. In fact, each track seems specifically designed to induce wild fits of head-bobbing and crazy dancing of the sort seen in the opening scenes of the first Austin Powers movie. Though the energy level here isn't quite up to par with his famous live albums, there's a lot to like on Trini Lopez in London. The material is first-rate, though often a bit predictable ("Strangers in the Night," "Fever," "It Had to Be You") and Lopez delivers charismatic performances on every track. His backing musicians keep up with him admirably ...
