Blue Oyster Cult: Donald "Buck Dharma" Roeser (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Joe Bouchard (vocals, guitar, bass); Eric Bloom (vocals, guitar); Tommy Zvoncheck (piano, organ, synthesizer); Jimmy Wilcox (percussion, background vocals). Additional personnel: Howard Stern (spoken vocals); Phil Grande (guitar); Kenny Aaronson (bass); Tommy Price (drums). Includes liner notes by Arthur Levy. Blue Öyster Cult's gradual disintegration continued with Club Ninja, on which original member Allen Lanier was replaced by keyboard player Tom Zvoncheck, and several compositions from outside the band were featured, notably the Leggat Brothers' "White Flags," and a couple of metal exercises by Bob Halligan, who had contributed much the same sort of material to Judas Priest. Sandy Pearlman was back in the producer's chair. ~ William Ruhlmann Blue Öyster Cult's gradual disintegration continued with Club Ninja, on which original member Allen Lanier was replaced by keyboard player Tom Zvoncheck, and several compositions from outside the band were featured, notably the Leggat Brothers' "White Flags," and a couple of generic metal exercises by Bob Halligan, who had contributed much the same sort of material to Judas Priest. On what should have been the positive side, Sandy Pearlman was back in the producer's chair. But he did nothing to arrest BÖC's decline into musical anonymity. ~ William Ruhlmann CLUB NINJA reunited BOC with the band's original conceptual guru and producer Sandy Pearlman but, oddly, this didn't signal a return to the band's original template of brainy, self-consciously menacing metal. Instead, the album continued in the vein of the radio-friendly, somewhat generic pop sounds of its predecessor, THE REVOLUTION BY NIGHT. Fortunately, Pearlman did turn the keyboards down a bit, giving the Eric Bloom/Buck Dharma guitar franchise much more space in the mix, and the album does feature what may be the band's best-ever thinking person's party anthem, the inspiringly titled "Make Rock, Not War." $16.29 The Church: Steven Kilbey, Peter Koppes, Tim Powles, Marty Wilson-Piper. Recorded at Blue Room Studios, Gavle, Sweden and Karmic Hit Studios, Sydney, Australia. Covers albums could be seen as the last refuge of a dying band, but that's a cynical reading of the situation. At their best, covers albums can be fun and even revealing, as the band stretches out and play with their favorite songs. Such is the case with the Church's A Box of Birds. Their roots have always been evident -- they were fans of '60s psychedelia, plus bits of '70s album rock and prog rock and post-punk. Not surprisingly, that's what's heard on A Box of Birds, but they've been very clever about their choices; only Mott the Hoople's "All the Young Dudes," Hawkwind's "Silver Machine." ...

| | Jay Elfenbein Gambadream CD (2005)
Club Ninja
$15.95 GambaDream brings a bold and colorful new sound to contemporary music. Growing from traditional jazz and classical roots but composed and played with the improvisational freedom and rhythmic energy of modern jazz and rock, Gambadream blends gorgeous melodies with inspired lyrics, lush harmonies, and innovative instrumentation. The group is led by Jay Elfenbein on acoustic viola da gamba and electric Ruby Gamba, an ancient string instrument reborn, which bows like a violin or cello, but also plucks like a bass and strums chords like a guitar.Mr. Elfenbein, whose career spans both classical and popular musical worlds, has played bass and gamba with a range of artists such as Yo Yo Ma, Joe Zawinul, Paul McCartney, Leonard Bernstein, John Zorn, Dave Brubeck, and Anthony Braxton, and plays early instruments on Paul Simon’s gold CD You’re the One. The CD features nine instrumental and vocal compositions by Elfenbein, from traditional jazz and rock forms to daring free-form improvisations, all with great musical intensity. Also included are pieces by Dave Holland, Joe Henderson, and an innovative arrangement of “Pick Yourself Up†by Jerome Kern. OF SPECIAL NOTE:The guitar-like arpeggios of the plucked viol that open “And Finally Grow†create the trancelike groove that propels this song, which features ...
