New Jazz album
$55.98 Originally released on Verve Records in 1961, ELLA IN HOLLYWOOD is a straightforward collection of 12 familiar standards mostly given very simple, pop-oriented arrangements. Songs tend to run well under four minutes (a gently swinging "Just In Time" clocks in just under two), with only a minimum of room for Fitzgerald to break into her legendary scatting. The main exception is the centerpiece track, a nine-minute take on the Duke Ellington standard "Take the A Train," that gives Fitzgerald ample room to stretch out vocally. Although fans of her scat work might be somewhat disappointed by this mainstream set, ELLA IN HOLLYWOOD serves to remind just how gifted a stylist Fitzgerald was in the pop genre as well.
Liner Note Authors: Harry Weinger; Richard Seidel.
Photographer: Chuck Stewart.
Personnel: Herb Ellis (guitar); Lou Levy (piano); Gus Johnson, Stan Levey (drums).

| | Art Tatum Piano Starts Here: Live At The Shrine (2008)
New Jazz songs
$14.59 This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players.
Few jazz pianists could ever hope to rival the technical mastery of Art Tatum. From the 1930s on through the `50s, Tatum's dazzling facility made it seem as if two pianists were playing at once. Though he often performed solo, his virtuosity allowed him to make the transition from swing to bebop effortlessly. Tatum's eclectic style also reflected influences from blues and classical music, and from early jazz and pop music of the time.
Long considered a classic album, PIANO STARTS HERE was assembled from studio and live sources from 1933 and 1949, respectively. Thanks to 21st-century technology however, PIANO has received a new lease on life, containing previously edited selections presented in their entirety, previously unissued tunes, and vastly improved sound quality. For lovers of the history of the jazz piano, PIANO STARTS HERE is essential.
| | Roy Hargrove Emergence CD (2009)
New Jazz album
$13.99 Trumpeter Roy Hargrove has been in some exotic musical environments in the past -- from his various quintets, quartets, his Afro-Cuban outfit Crisol, and his funk band the RH Factor, he's pretty much done it all. And while he's played in various big bands before, he's never led his own until now. Emergence on the Groovin' High imprint features a 19-member big band, playing a set of 11 standards and originals by Hargrove and bandmembers as well as a track written for the leader by none other than pianist Chucho Valdés -- who doesn't appear here. The roots for this project go all the way back to 1995 when Hargrove formed a big band to play the New York Jazz Festival. The group went through many metamorphoses when he played a series of club and festival gigs over the intervening years. The set begins with "Velera," a tune written and arranged by Hargrove. It's a ballad in modal style with extended harmonies and a lovely textural palette. The composer employs restraint to bring forth his gorgeous melody. It's followed by "Ms. Garvey, Ms. Garvey," written and arranged by baritone saxophonist Jason Marshall. It quotes liberally from "Wade in the Water" and "Hit the Road Jack," but is a stomping, raucous blues in its own right with the wide chromatic and harmonic range of the brass section on full display, and contains a smoking solo break by Hargrove. Some of the standards that really shine are an unusually restrained and utterly elegant "My Funny Valentine" and the finger-popping "September in the Rain," the former arranged by bass trombonist Max Siegel and the latter by Hargrove. Frank Lacy's "Requiem" is here, and is the most imaginative tune on the set; arranged by the composer, it walks a solid line between modern post-bop jazz and modern classical composition. Roberta Gambarini is the guest vocalist on "Every Time We Say Goodbye," and does a knockout job. There are a couple of Latin numbers on the set as well, and they just smoke: "Mambo for Roy," written by Valdés,

| | Ari Herstand Whispering Endearments CD (2008)
New Jazz songs
$13.69 Ari Herstand is a Minneapolis music junkie. âThere was a period where I attended 4-5 local concerts a week for about 2 years,â he mentions. Herstand, who just returned from an East Coast Tour and a two week stint at Milwaukeeâs Summerfest, is unmistakably proud of the cityâs music scene from where he now calls home: âItâs the best music scene in the world!âLooking at the credits on Herstandâs second studio album and third release to date, Whispering Endearments, his love for the Minneapolis music scene is no secret. Front man and principle songwriter of This World Fair, Chris Kalgren, co-produced the album with Herstand while Minnesota based, Grammy nominated Paul Marino (Haley Bonar, Chris Koza, Desdamona, The New Congress, Ann Nesby) engineered. Many other Minneapolis artists also make appearances throughout the album.Herstand, who has opened for national artists such as Ben Folds, Cake, Sister Hazel, Soul Asylum, The Bodeans, Joshua Radin and Matt Nathanson, took an extended break from the road to record this new album. Whispering Endearments displays an incredible maturation from his first two releases. Spending nearly 6 months creating the new album, working with an investor instead of a record label and no time frame, Herstand created the record completely void of time, money and industry constraints. Meticulously working to find the perfect guitar and drum tones, arranging and rearranging instrumentations and challenging himself vocally, Herstand along with Kalgren and Marino worked until excellence was achieved for Whispering Endearments. The songs are filled with memorable hooks, but never clichĂ©. The instrumentations are brilliantly arranged and the performances are at the highest quality of musicality. The blend of acoustic, rock, pop, folk, jazz and funk are all tied together by Herstandâs mature songwriting and passionately delicate and beautifully distinctive vocals. The album opens with a metaphorical, lost love âbellâ anthem, rich with holiday imagery and sentiments, juxtaposed with helplessness and regretful loss. âOne Bellâ aptly sets the tone for the rest of the joyously, bittersweet album. The first single released off of Whispering Endearments, âLast Day,â deals with a carpe diem mantra while keeping it inquisitively personal: âIf you knew this was our last kiss how would your lips move.â The rock and roll appearance of Joe Christenson (White Light Riot) on âRose Stained Redâ and the jazz/funk sax solo by Jason Parvey (Roster McCabe) on âCenter of a Kissâ could easily give both songs a âpartyâ label, until the darker, lyrical content is fully explored: âA beautiful flower will whither and die / if the neighboring weeds choke the struggling cry / for food and life and peace and soul / a rose stained red deserves a little moreâ and on Center of Kiss, "A piece of a sentimental wish / sinks the calm, this hormonal driven bliss / and incandescent eyes stare at my grieving little smile / but we go and I know the treading in the water / I'll be drowning in the water / we say goodbye."In âChristian Dear,â Herstandâs voice â innocent, yet broken â along with the stripped instrumentation, divulge the helpless realization of falling for the wrong person for all the right reasons: âIâm a new man with a new plan / Iâm taking my time like a kid in the sand / I have new tears and new fears / Iâm falling in love with a Chrisitan Dear.âHerstand completely unveils his heart in âYour Eyesâ where he replays the hesitant beginning and regretful destruction of a relationship. The songâs bridge brings a welcomed, emotional release accompanied with a delicate guitar solo by Zack Carroll. The tender, closing numbers â tied together with delicately subtle chimes â gently releases the listener from Whispering Endearments.Whispering Endearments was recorded at Pachyderm Studios in Cannon Falls, Minnesota and was mastered by Greg Calbi (John Mayer, Nora
| | Evicted Place Called Home CD (2008)
New Jazz album
$17.05 The people of Zimbabwe have little to crow about these days- their country lies in ruins, its economy bled dry by a ruthless dictator. But in the empty wake of tragedy the voice of hope always resounds more clearly, and three talented young Zimbabwean musos have pulled themselves out of the rubble and formed a band whose music taps into a fundamental part of the modern Zimbabwean pysche: Unity.Singer/guitarist Derek Bailey, drummer Nick Newbery and bassist Adam Francis enjoyed a happy childhood in the remoter parts of one of Africaâs most beautiful countries, however the sweetness of youth took on a sour tinge as the political and humanitarian situation in Zimbabwe worsened. High school graduation brought about the formation of Evicted and the birth of a rock and roll dream â a dream all three members realised would never see fruition if they remained in Zimbabwe. Yet they persevered, putting incredible faith in their catchy punk rock sound, which thanks to some relentless gigging and a self titled demo (recorded in the bush on cheap plastic toy microphones) began to build up a fan base throughout Southern Africa. Adam Francis left the band to pursue a finance careeer, and was replaced by accomplished music teacher Dominic Benson, who plays his own unique style of âAfrican bassâ. The pieces of the puzzle where in place, and the whole band knew they were onto something special. They had developed a distinct sound which can best be described as âAfro Rockâ, or Chimurenga Punkâ - a fusion of hard hitting melodic rock and traditional Zimbabwean music styles, a true blend of ethnic and western sounds. Cultural unity at its catchiest, and a musical formula that seemed destined for mass appeal. But when Derek moved to Australia to undertake a degree in Popular Music the members of the band found themselves on three different continents with three different passports. An unavoidable hiatus was entered into, one that was only broken on occasion when immigration, travel and cost issues could be overcome. It was during these moments that the 11 track album âPlace Called Homeâ came into being- the result of five years of meeting up and recording wherever and whenever they could, and taking their pulsating live shows to various venues in Zimbabwe, South Africa, Mozambique and Australia. The resulting album, âPlace Called Homeâ offers a sonic and lyrical perspective on corruption, poverty, racism, love and the mass displacement of a people and a nation. Hard rock drumming and higher pitched African guitar styles complement each other perfectly in the upbeat remake of the Zimbabwean classic âMapurisaâ, a song which has crept its way onto radio airwaves in South Africa and become something of a cult hit in Southern Afica and beyond. One of the newest songs, âMentalâ, joins it as an instant party classic, while the dark, sombre tones of âMisledâ are an outlet for the bands frustration at the downfall of their home country. The plaintive notes and the heartfelt appeals to ârenew all that was gone, show me how to flyâ in the ballad âPlace Called Homeâ plant seeds of hope and irrigate them with a mix of anger and despair. What grows out of it are fruits of emotion that unite all who listen with a desire for positive change. The band arent pretending to be politicians, but they believe awareness is a vital cog in the quest for truth and justice. And as the sun is setting on a long and hard road for Zimbabwe, one characterised by thirty years of tyranny, the voice of the people is starting to resound around the world â ZVAKWANA: ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. Evicted are helping to make that voice a whole lot louder. Its time to open your ears.
| | Erich Mace Free Moral Agent (Raw) CD (2008)
New Jazz CD music
$16.45 Erich Mace is the singer/songwriter behind Acoustic Empowerment. From an early age, the Reading, PA native was exposed to the sounds of 60âs and 70âs rock and roll through his father, an amateur musician. Erichâs first stage appearance had already occurred by the age of 3, as he and other children would dance and place toy instruments with his fatherâs band. Erich recalls writing tunes and jingles for even the most mundane aspects of life, âBrushing my teeth, washing my faceâŠyeah I could have made an album promoting personal hygiene.â He began publicly performing in Pittsburgh in 2005, and his confidence grew as he explored the Pittsburgh music scene. These days Erich is devoting himself to empowerment people through the music he writes, appearing at venues in the Mid-Atlantic region. Erichâs music has landed him on some great stages thus far including The North Star Bar, Milkboy Coffee, World CafĂ© Live (Philadelphia), Arleneâs Grocery, and Kennyâs Castaways (New York), as well as numerous Christian retreats and community events. Late June 2007 saw Erich gaining momentum as he was awarded âPeopleâs Choiceâ at the Emergenza 2007 Philadelphia Acoustic Hero Contest, and later that year, âOne Day Wonâ was chosen for Quickstar Productions âChill Outâ-an acoustic compilation featuring East Coast artists currently in digital distribution. In 2008, Berklee grad Christian Matthew came into the mix, playing acoustic slide guitar with Erich and adding an additional layer of intricacy and earthiness to the music. August 2008 saw them elected to take part in the Philly Song Shuffle, a 3 hour event showcasing Philadelphiaâs finest singer/songwriters.
| | Susan Morris Bitter Sweet CD (2008)
New Jazz music CDs
$11.39 Critics of Susan Morrisâ music use the term âeccentricâ seeing as how it deviates from a standard musical approach. Eccentric is not the over used âMy first memories of singing in front of a crowd are at churchâŠâ. It more accurately describes a familyâs memories of a young child singing obnoxiously loud along with the radio, then making up her own songs when the radio was off. A stint at Nashvilleâs School of the Arts kept her performing and singing into high school, but it wasnât until her senior year that she realized how big a part songwriting would play in her life. âI knew early on that I wanted to be a singerâ Susan remembers, âbut the songwriting is just a part of me. Itâs not something I set out to do as a career, itâs who I am.The little girl with the big voice and the serious songs is now Susan Morris, a woman with a powerful, affecting vocal talent and a gift for writing about love, life, and standing up for what you believe in. Her raw honesty in her debut album, Bitter Sweet, is delivered in songs like âBetterâ, where she muses that sometimes itâs better not to have loved and lost, or the courageously introspective âWake Upâ. She leaves no doubt that she knows what she wants with âBe A Manâ, and then crawls inside your heart like sheâs always been there in âTruth Hurtsâ. Listening to Susan you will be challenged to give one name to her style. Just enjoy the music and realize this is different. In music, different is a good thing. And when you are asked to describe it for someone, sheâd be proud if youâre tempted to use that word⊠âeccentricâ.

| | Code Machine Human Tragedy CD (2008)
New Jazz album
$17.75 Hi, we are Code Machine and this is our project. We hope you'll enjoy it.Code Machineâs music is a mix between EBM and synthpop, with a hint of techno. Itâs the expression of true personal feelings and a reflection about our society and the world we live in. Code Machine sincerely thinks that electro music is a committed music, which should convey strong messages. Some people consider that electronic music is easy to make. Are we any less of a musician because we use synths, drum machines, samplers and computers ? Is photography any less of an art than paiting because the machine creates the image (eventhough the human is behind the idea and the composition) ? There is no hierarchy is music. Electronic music is also a means of expression and is in no way easier to make than rock.
| | Mary Morgan-Corbitt Watermelon Socks CD (2008)
New Jazz CD music
$18.99 Bio:A teacher for over 12 years who has taught Early Childhood-Special Education, Elementary Special Education as well as Early Childhood, Mary enjoys using music to teach essential skills as well as academic and social concepts. She sings with local bands around St. Louis , and spends much of her spare time writing songs and enjoying the many adventures life brings with her husband Adam and their two children, Maya and Morgan. The Story of Watermelon Socks:Many have asked what the story is behind the song and CD title, Watermelon Socks. With the help of my friend, Margaret Phillips, I want to share with you how it all came about.I had written many songs for children and had toiled with the idea to share them with my coworkers in an upcoming Professional Development Day for teachers. My close friend Margaret, a Speech Pathologist, was quite encouraging and supportive. One cold, rainy day in the Fall of 2005, we had a lengthy discussion in the parking lot after one of our district teacher meetings. We talked about many thingsâŠjobs, interests, hopes, and family. Margaret began sharing about her daughter Maureen, her loves and sweet personality. Maureenâs life was short, just 2 years old when she passed away, though she took quite a bite out of life! Margaret shared that Maureen loved wearing her little watermelon socks. âMaureen would tug off her watermelon socks and then tip over from the effort. She thought that was BIG FUN." During our talk, I remember sharing with Margaret how great of a title (Watermelon Socks) that would be for âsomethingâ ~ We smiled at the thought and both seemed to know that this was the beginning of something so meaningful and joyful. Within 30 minutes, the song Watermelon Socks came to life. Itâs a song about life, joy, and remembrance. Itâs about memories and the beauty that lies within them. Itâs about hope, love and purpose. Itâs about remembering to take the biggest, juiciest, sweetest bite out of life that we possibly can!
| | Pennyo Luminar CD (2008)
New Jazz music CDs
$12.69 PennYo's origins date back to the spring of 2002, when a group of freshman friends at the University of Pennsylvania began meeting in order to sing Chinese songs familiar from their youth. Though most had limited musical experience, they nevertheless decided to make something of their mutual passion for singing and formed an a cappella group devoted both to Chinese oldies and newer Chinese pop songs. After performing for various student organizations and community events, PennYo held the first of its semester-end concerts, Autumn Blue , in the fall of 2002. From there, the a cappella group has gained a growing circle of fans and supporters, as well as official recognition in the Penn performing arts scene. We just celebrated our 5th anniversary during Spring 2007. PennYo â What We AreThe name âPennYoâ is a play on the Mandarin word for friends, âpeng you.â This aptly sums up the group's philosophy of being a tightly knit circle of friends, beginning with the group founders. PennYo members have hailed from the United States, China, Taiwan, Singapore, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Korea and even Hungary. Yet the group has managed to foster an all-inclusive, eclectic culture that is uniquely PennYo. The group shares a mission to bring the sounds of popular Chinese songs to the United States through a cappella. The process is not so much a direct replication of existing music as it is an evolution into a new formâa form, which the group hopes will appeal to existing fans of Chinese music, as well as those who have never been exposed before. What is âChinese a cappella?âChinese a cappella is a fledgling phenomenon which PennYo is helping to initiate in the United States. Our source material is drawn largely from the contemporary Chinese pop music scene. PennYo then takes these songs to new dimensions by filtering them through all-vocal arrangements and also by mixing American pop songs into the background.Though PennYo sings primarily in Mandarin, it has also performed songs in Taiwanese, Cantonese, Japanese, Korean and English. We strive to celebrate the richness and diversity within Chinese culture, as well as the international influences which have infiltrated the Chinese pop mainstream. Songs in the PennYo repertoire come from artists such as Taiwanese pop singers Jay Chou and David Tao, Cantonese superstar Jacky Cheung, Singaporean diva Stefanie Sun, classic Chinese singer Theresa Teng, Korean artist Shin Seung Hun, and Japanese a cappella group Try-Tone. Where We Are Going Having established itself as the newest phenomenon in the Penn a cappella scene, PennYo is now expanding beyond the borders of its campus. We had a Shanghai Tour where we performed at multiple colleges and the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. Our next step is to plan a California Tour of the colleges there. We also produced our first album, Emergence, in fall 2005 and now in Spring 2008 our second album, Luminar is here!
