By the time SENZO was released in 2008, the great South African pianist Abdullah Ibrahim had long been making inventive wholly yet accessible jazz for nearly 50 years. As though to acknowledge the length and breadth of his career, SENZO, a collection of 22 pieces for solo acoustic piano, plays like a sweet, lyrical tapestry of Ibrahim's deep and abiding talent. As always, Ibrahim weaves any number of musical influences into his playing, including post-bop, blues, ambient-tinged chamber music, and the township music of his native country. Yet his work never feels like a collage. Instead, the music sings with an authority and sensitivity that is a clear product of Ibrahim's artistic mastery, so that references to Coltrane and Ellington seem as natural as references to South African roots music. The intimacy and grace of the artist's solo piano performances on SENZO make it all the more memorable.

ALEGRIA is a truly remarkable return to form for Wayne Shorter. Despite a number of missteps in the years since his acclaimed early-'60s releases JUJU and SPEAK NO EVIL, the revered tenor saxman and composer enjoyed a renaissance with 2002's well-received FOOTPRINTS LIVE and this collection of meticulously executed tunes. ALEGRIA recalls the Shorter of yore with its brainy, challenging arrangements and dexterous inside/outside musicianship. The opener "Sacajawea," for example, with its boogie rhythm and free-form solo explorations, gives ample evidence that Shorter and company mean business.
As one would expect, the musicians here are superb, with bassist John Patitucci and drummer Brian Blade holding and pushing the rhythm. Young pianist Brad Mehldau, with his delicate, classical sensibility, replaces regular keyboardist Danilo Perez on "Serenata" and a radical reworking of the Miles Davis Quintet's "Orbits." Textures continue to shift and expand as Shorter employs cello, tuba, flute, oboe, and bassoon on cuts like the spectral "Vendiendo Alegria" and the puzzle-piece ...

On his second album fronting his band Sadawi, trumpeter and composer Paul Brody continues his work in the avant-klezmer trenches, helping to drag that hundred-year-old music kicking and screaming into the 21st century. On Beyond Babylon he shows his unwillingness to be constrained by any ghetto boundaries, opening the album with an extended deconstruction of the Shaker hymn "Simple Gifts" (which features a hair-raisingly skronky banjo solo by Brandon Seabrook), and making use of elements of both dub (on the contemplative and lovely "Timepeace"), and rock (note the guitar parts on "Fragment of Kafka's Friend") as well as lots and lots of modern jazz. In this dazzling epic from Akira Kurosawa, a petty thief named Kagemusha (Tatsuya Nakadai) gets saved from a death sentence because he resembles the warlord Shingen Takeda (also Nakadai). Even before the first note is played, the apocrypha proclaiming this to be a non-professional recording -- which finds Naima Coltrane (aka Mrs. John Coltrane) as "audio engineer" -- is fortunately true. The raw nature of the contents accurately reveal the reality of experiencing a Five Spot gig during the venerable venue's halcyon days. What can also be found beyond the sporadic chatter and general hubbub of a New York City Harlem nightclub is arguably the strongest aural evidence of the unique working rapport these two jazz icons shared. While the relationship between Monk and Coltrane is at the crux of these performances, Ahmed Abdul-Malik (bass) and the irrepressible Roy Haynes (drums) also contribute mightily by allowing enough context to support the soloist while pulling out occasional solos of their own. Haynes' interjections to "In Walked Bud" and "I Mean You" go beyond the simple progression of rhythm. While the perspective of this recording is somewhat unfavorable to Coltrane, there is no mistaking the intense activity of his tenor sax. His solo during "I Mean You" is particularly potent, as he somehow finds room to incorporate a well-placed line or two from a popular show tune (no surprises spoiled here for potential enthusiasts eager for a good sonic hide and seek). The rendition of "Crepuscule with Nellie" -- which is joined in progress, although only by a few bars -- best personifies both the character of this audience recording as well as the ability for the music's sublime nature to filter those distractions away. This combo's residency at the Five Spot during the summer of 1958 coincides with other notable live sets cut during this time -- Thelonious in Action and its counterpart, Misterioso.
