Little Buddha, the soundtrack for the movie of the same name, is all original music composed and conducted by Ryuichi Sakamoto. Sakamoto may be best known for his score to the movie The Sheltering Sky, for which he won a Golden Globe, and The Last Emperor, for which he won an Academy Award. For years, Noone headed a group with the eccentric front-line of clarinet and sax. Moreover, a very large number of his recordings were -- or sounded as if they'd be -- kind of hokey. It's a pity. Not only was Earl Hines the band's longtime pianist, but trumpeter George Mitchell, Bud Scott and Johnny St Cyr crop up at various times. Yet the sidemen aren't the point, any more than the hokey moments.
