In a small trailer in Houston, TX, an acoustic guitar was placed on the floor for a baby to crawl on and play with. This is where a life of passion for music was born for Austin Cobb. His father and mother have always allowed him to freely explore music in every way with out stifling his artistic expression. As a toddler, Austin Cobb’s father taught him to sing, play guitar, banjo, harmonica, piano, and drums. At 3 ½ years of age, Austin Cobb’s family moved to Tahlequah where the local music inspired his passion for music even more. Between piano lessons, playing with the family band, going to school, and hanging out doing normal kid stuff, Austin Cobb managed to make it through high school. Playing in several heavy rock cover bands, the opportunity to play in the NSU “Downtown Country Show” came about, once again further inspiring Austin Cobb’s passion for music. He would continue with the Downtown Country Show for three years in which he shared the stage with Carrie Underwood, T.J. Spears, Kaileigh Bullard, and Kelli Doolen Farmer as well as many other great musicians. After dropping out of college, Austin Cobb decided that a life of music was his only choice. With the release of his long awaited self-titled debut album, recorded at Farinelli Studios in Tahlequah, Austin Cobb is taking his first steps as a solo artist. | | Mary Smith Of Rogues & Lovers CD (2009)
Austin Cobb & The Contra Band
$16.45 Mary Smith is a traditional singer from central Virginia. Her father, Ronald Smith, was an avid collector of traditional American folk music, old time Country and Western, Bluegrass and Gospel. It was a natural step for her to take up the guitar, and her interest in the ballads of the Appalachian Mountains led to her to explore the traditional songs of England, Ireland and Scotland. She is a popular performer at festivals, coffeehouses and concert venues in Virginia and Washington, DC, has toured in the UK, and also gives educational presentations and workshops on traditional ballads. Mary says of her music: “I’ve often been urged to do more “contemporary material” that “people can relate to”, but I’ve never taken that advice. I have to sing from the heart, and I feel like the traditional songs have drawn me to them and not the other way around. They still have something to say, and they still are relevant to all of us, if we are willing to listen. The essential human condition hasn’t changed over the centuries, and the roots of traditional music go deep into our collective soul. We still fall in love, we experience joy and regret, longing and fulfillment, loneliness and friendship. And all of these emotions and more are expressed in the song tradition, often more exquisitely than in any classically constructed poem ...
