Bridging The Narrow album
$14.45 After the dark and chilling themes of 2006's BLACK CADILLAC, which saw Rosanne Cash dealing with the deaths of her mother, Vivian Liberto, her father, Johnny Cash, and her stepmother, June Carter Cash -- all of whom passed within a two-year span -- one might assume that her next project would move into an even deeper level of bleakness, but with THE LIST, it's immediately clear that she has instead found a more measured place to stand. It's a lovely and redemptive outing that looks back to go forward. When Cash turned 18, her father, alarmed that his daughter only knew the songs that were getting played on the radio, gave her a list of what he considered 100 essential American songs; Cash kept that list, and now she's drawn on it for this wonderfully nuanced outing that brims with a kind of redemptive timelessness. THE LIST is a renewal and a testament to life, and it belongs to her father as much as it belongs to her, a beautiful restatement of her father's passions, only now, they've become his daughter's treasures, as well. It's an affirming story, but that's all it would be if Cash didn't sing her heart out here. The opener, a version of Jimmie Rodgers' ...
| | Them Crooked Vultures CD (2009)
Bridging The Narrow CD music
$11.19 Often, supergroups wind up dominated by one particular personality - think Eric Clapton in Derek & the Dominos, Jack White in the Raconteurs -- which makes the egalitarianism of Them Crooked Vultures all the more remarkable. Of course, when it comes down to it, it's a group of three natural-born collaborators: John Paul Jones, the old studio pro who gravitated toward provocative partners after Led Zeppelin's demise, teaming up with R.E.M. ...

| | Muse The Resistance CD (2009)
Bridging The Narrow album
$15.65 With its titanic guitar solos, symphonic suites, and multi-layered melodies, Muse's fifth album operates under the assumption that bigger is better. This is the very definition of a super-sized album, an album that takes its cues from Queen, its lyrics from science fiction novels, and its delivery from rock opera. It's also the first time that Muse has truly sounded like Muse, as few bands since Queen have so readily explored the intersection of bombast and extravagance. THE RESISTANCE is most certainly extravagant -- there are snatches of classical piano entwined throughout, not to mention bilingual lyrics, concert hall percussion, coronet solos, and song titles like "Exogenesis: Symphony, Pt. 2 (Cross-Pollination)" -- but it's also quite beautiful, capable of moving between prog rock choruses and excerpts from Chopin's "Nocturne in E Flat Major" ...
| | Rolling Stones Let It Bleed CD (1969)
Bridging The Narrow CD music
$14.19 The last Stones studio album of the '60s finds the band, for perhaps the first time, accurately reflecting the spirit of its age. The erstwhile bad boy outsiders of rock now found themselves firmly in the center of the social and political post-'68 whirlwind, and faced up to the challenge magnificently. The band's confident climb to its artistic peak was begun by BEGGAR'S BANQUET, but LET IT BLEED is a quantum leap even from that musical milestone.
The album's opener, "Gimme Shelter," with its insinuating ...

| | Gilmary Doyle-Andrews Comes Up Grinnin' CD (2009)
Bridging The Narrow CD music
$7.99 Gilmary’s music is a blend of styles ranging from honky tonk to simple fingerstyle folk. Influences include old folkies like Tom Paxton, Bob Dylan, Loudon Wainwright, with a hint of Susan Werner, Cheryl Wheeler, and Christine Lavin. “I grew up listening to folk music. My older brothers and cousins all played guitar and sang, so it was a foregone conclusion that I would play as well. The songs of Tom Paxton and Peter, Paul and Mary color my childhood memories, along with old standards and Broadway musical numbers. Someone was always singing something, although it was fifty-fifty whether or not they knew all the words.“I started out as an actor in Chicago, running my own company for a time, then branching out and working with many of the fine Off-Loop companies that populate Chicago’s artistic landscape. ...

Bridging The Narrow CD music
$9.35 The Random Humans appear on the hip-hop scene with their September release of a self-titled three-song E.P. that gives a taste of what’s to come. Longview, Alberta native, Deception combines a steady flow to the beats provided by the talented beatsmith, Bear. Introductory performances following the release are scheduled in B.C. and Alberta from the end of September to the end of October 2009. Deception, with his quick wit and instinctual gift for spitting rhymes, developed a love for expression through music after seeing his first freestyle battle in 2002. Since cutting his teeth writing and experimenting with over 100 songs, Deception has recorded a full-length album, Under False Creek (2009), with Calgary producer, Decline. A Calgary native, ...
