Labyrinth came about as the result of a Jazz Fellowship from the PA Council of the Arts. I used the recording as an opportunity to explore techniques and harmonic concepts I had been developing over the years. This was also an opportunity to record with musicians with whom I had never previously worked in addition to some with whom I knew for a number of years. Bob Meashey, trumpet – I’ve know and worked with Bob in various ensembles over the years; his solos are always lyrical and sensitive. Paul Gehman, bass & Dan Monaghan, drums – I’ve know these two exceptionally creative and solid players for over five years through various projects I would start - but not always finish! I wanted to give something back to them through this recording. Tony Miceli, vibes – I’ve known Tony off and on for many years but this was our first recording together – what a treat! Tony is an amazingly talented musician; an extremely hard worker meticulous in his effort to master the music before him. Tony Marino, bass & Erik Johnson, drums – these remarkable and extraordinary improvisers came to be part of this recording via Tony Miceli and I will be forever grateful – they were a pleasure to work with and always inspiring. Jim McFalls, trombone – what a talent! Ron Thomas (Lyonswaltz) told me about him and I was blown-away with his phenomenal level of playing. I’ve known Ron through gigs we’ve done and from concerts he has given – an exceptionally talented improviser and composer. Vince Trombetta was my professor of saxophone at what is now the University of the Arts in Philly and is presently quite successful in Los Angeles. I was rummaging through some old manuscript books and came across his brilliant tune Voodoo, which he had handwritten for me to study. I recalled how much I enjoyed the changes in the tune and decided to add it to the mix. The sextet of flute, trumpet and trombone works quite well so I decided to arrange both Ron and Vince’s tunes in that setting. Finally, the album was recorded locally in Springhouse, PA at Morningstar Studios by the exceptionally gifted and patient Dave Schonauer. The artwork is by my lovely wife, Marlene. Enjoy.EXCERPT FROM A RECENT REVIEW:With Labyrinth, jazz flutist and composer/arranger Marc Adler has created a rich and compelling compact disc recording of contemporary jazz chamber music…Adler’s improvisations display a fleet technique, with his tone alternating between a pleasant and earthy/breath-like quality and a pure/clear sound…Each of the soloists in the ensemble create mature improvisations that demonstrate an understanding of contemporary jazz styles in swing and even eighth-note genres. Labyrinth is a contemporary jazz recording of high caliber that serves notice to the flute and jazz communities that Marc Adler is a musician to be recognized.- Bob Lark, Jazz Studies Chair & Director of the Jazz Ensemble, DePaul University, Chicago, Illinois – excerpt of his review of Labyrinth in the October 2008 issue of Flute Talk magazine.

How a good-looking Jewish boy from Brooklyn discovered the secret of success in an updated form of mariachi music is perhaps beyond our scope. Then again, it might not be such a mystery after all. Aside from the obvious example of exotica, much easy listening depends upon more than a touch of ethnicity to maintain its musical roots. What Herb Alpert found in Mexican street bands was a previously untapped source of south-of-the-border melody and rhythm. With its unlikely combination of Alpert's cool Chet Baker-like trumpet and the blocky cadences of a marching band, the Tijuana ...

Meditation
Guy Grimstead Meditation CD  (2009)

Guy Grimstead's beautifully rich piano music has a quality that can make you "melt." When I heard a few of the 30-second clips on his website, I played them over and over and couldn't wait to hear the rest. I was thrilled that Guy not only sent me a CD, but allowed me to stream it in its entirety to you from here at The Ranch. Enjoy!A Word from GuyOver the years when I've needed to "meditate" I've found a piano somewhere, sat down and begun to play. I don't play songs I know or have written - I just play. These times of spontaneous improvisation have been rich for me in a very mystical way. It seems I'm able to pour out my heart to God, to connect with my true self and to somehow key in to a sense of healing during these times. This CD is an attempt at trying to capture that kind of experience for you, the listener.About GuyGuy Grimstead is a multi-instrumentalist/singer/songwriter/producer. He also teaches privately, plays gigs around the San Francisco Bay Area and is developing a consulting ministry for local congregations focused on helping them improve their worship experience. About This AlbumThere was no planning in creating these songs. They are truly spontaneous improvisations. The songs on the CD are in the order that they came out of me. I originally wanted to record on a piano retrofitted with MIDI triggers, so that I could edit the playing, and polish any imperfections. However, I got impatient and wanted to get it out, so I just went and did it the old fashioned way. I did the recording at Lafayette Orinda Presbyterian Church during two evenings in early September 2003. At LOPC, they have a beautiful six foot Steinway from the early 20th century as well as a great sounding sanctuary. The magic of an intrumental work is that it can mean so many things to so many different people. I hope these songs and melodies will make their way into your heart and touch you in a deep way as they have touched me. Thank you God for putting music in my heart - and allowing it to flow out through my fingers. May this music, in some way, contribute to accomplishing your will in the world. DedicationThis album is dedicated to my wonderful parents - Jay and Donna Grimstead. Perhaps the desire and ability to create a CD like this was developed in me in a large way because of things I learned from them. I'll explain. Dad was always making up stories on the spot and creating these adventures for my sister and I that he'd tell us at bedtime. He'd get into it to much and get so excited, and even HE wouldn't know how the story was going to end. Well, I guess I'm doing the same thing through this intrumental piano music. And Mom...over the years, whenever I'd start ...
