A little over the top but still Australia as we were then before the gradual shift brought on by multicultural changes that made us what we are now.

2 stars Not what I expected
Australia is a much over hyped, overrated film which is much less than what I expected to see. Nichole Kidman delivers perhaps the worst performance of her career and the film is at least 1 hour too long. I can't believe some people are even comparing this film to Gone with the Wind or Casablanca. It is nowhere near as good as those classic films which changed the face of cinema. Australia is delivered in a very slow, methodical, and somewhat boring pace. It does deliver some good dialogue and special effects, however all of that is overshadowed by the films negatives. Where did Baz get it so terribly wrong... What was hyped as being the greatest Australian film ever made turned out to be a boring, 3 hour drag fest with a bit of taste. It is very popular among audiences and Oprah in particular, however movie buffs and critics usually give the film bad reviews because it doesnt deliver or compare to other great Australian films, such as Mad Max and Wolfcreek, Need I say more...

This outback-epic falls well below its potential. It's at least half an hour too long and although its cast keeps the movie interesting with their solid performances it drags every now and then. Australia might entertain you or it might put you to sleep.

Set in Australia on the brink of World War II, Lady Sarah Ashley, an English Aristocrat (Kidman), travels to the faraway continent where she has inherited a cattle ranch, owned by her late husband. When Australian cattle barons plot to take her land, she reluctantly joins forces with a rough-hewn local known as The Drover (Jackman) to drive 2,000 head of cattle across hundreds of miles of the countrys most unforgiving land, only to still face the bombing of Darwin by the Japanese forces that had attacked Pearl Harbor. When tragedy strikes and Lady Sarah becomes unofficial guardian to a half-caste boy, the unlikely couple must come to terms with a prejudiced society, dishonorable business associates and the impending arrival of the Japanese.
